CBS ranked all 131 FBS teams
This is the Top 10. The teams to the right are their first game.
Here's some good match ups in Week 1:
The big game of the first week will be Ohio St vs Notre Dame. It's in the night time prime time slot. Ratings will be huge. It would seem that Ohio St is the automatic win. But not so fast. Born On Third might not be all he's cracked up to be. He was unable to come up with answers in his two biggest games last year, Oregon and Michigan. And he would have likely lost to Utah if Utah wasn't down to using 3rd String DBs. Utah even used a RB at emergency DB. Ohio St had to have a big 4th Qtr to win 48-45. So, it's not a done deal that Ohio St beats Notre Dame. What a shame if Ohio St has a set back in the first week.
Georgia vs. Oregon may not be as good as some think it will be. Oregon was dominated twice last year by Utah. Then made a big coaching change. So there will be some revamping going on. And even though Georgia lost a lot to the draft, they should still win fairly comfortably.
Utah vs Florida is probably going to be a better game than most think it will be. Utah should win. But Billy Napier is a great coach. He turned the Ragin Cajuns into a good team pretty quickly. He'll probably do the same with Florida. It will take a little time. If this game was held next year Florida might be the winner. But not yet this year.
Arkansas vs. Cincinnati should be a pretty good game. Cincinnati is likely going to lose. The Cinderella stuff for Cincinnati will be over early this year. Which is ok--no having to deal with rabid Cincinnati fans all year. And it looks like CBS thinks they will lose too, as they have Cincinnati ranked below Arkansas.
Penn St vs Purdue will play on the first Thursday night of college football. It's a battle of BIG10 East/BIG10 West 3rd or 4th place finishers. Which makes it a pretty equal match up. Might be a good one to watch.
Here's CBS's bottom 10. Looks like they have no faith in Don Brown.
UMass will be better than 131st in the Nation. CBS, you are wrong!
Clemson will be fascinating to watch now that Venables is gone. Was last year an anomaly or are they getting the benefit of name recognition and recency bias?
I think ND gets them in South Bend this year.
I think Clemson is “past peak”. But, they play in the ACC, so - who is really going to challenge them?
Dabo is waiting for Saban to retire. He only has a few years at Clemson at most.
Do you think Bama will aim for Dabo, whenever that day comes?
For sure will be interesting. Last year their offense was 100% the problem, their Venables coached defense was a top 5 unit all year. I’m sure there is still a lot of lingering defensive talent, and I’m sure the replacement is a Venables disciple, but we will see if their defense is a organized as years past. Also, we will see if they get a massive bounce back on offense, I however don’t see DeShaun Watson or Trevor Lawrence walking through the door
I believe Dabo provided this quote a few years ago.. “Bring your own guts.” It seems they have been misplaced, or lost.
At least 3/4 of their DL will be All Acc with some individual awards sprinkled in.
Outside of Alabama in the SEC championship, Clemson gave Georgia their toughest game last year.
Also, Utah at FOUR is rich.
That was my first thought, too. Yeah they hung with OSU but the PAC 12 is so weak I don't think any of their teams belong in the top 10. Maybe Oregon?
I dunno. Oregon will also be fascinating under new leadership. They quit last year.
That was my first thought, too. Yeah they hung with OSU but the PAC 12 is so weak I don't think any of their teams belong in the top 10. Maybe Oregon?
They bring a lot of guys back and they know what they do really well, which also includes punching you in the mouth. The weak PAC-12 should be fine for them to meet maybe USC in the PAC-12 championship. I think they're going to curb stomp florida.
I think Utah has a reasonable chance at making the playoffs and getting thoroughly handled by a much better opponent... like Michigan.
Yeah, I don't agree an OSU win is automatic either. Matter of fact ND getting +14.5 is just ridiculous for a Week 1 game and probably worth slapping down a Ben.
Ironically about the same point spread from the Oregon-OSU last year.
Saw something the other day stating OSU is a double digit favorite in EVERY (yes every) game in 2022.
They have far more faith in Ryan Day than I do. Maybe they are hanging their hat on the new DC, Jim Knowles.
On Knowles: Even if he's the guy, you have to figure it's a medium-term play. They might not see positive returns right away.
You are correct, however, they were last year too pre-season.
Excellent, hope they are big favorites in November for The Game
If that means we have underperformed between now and then, no. I'd like the day to come when we march to every meeting with them confident as hell and having kicked butt from Game 1 forward. Of course, it's the real world, but our offense is going to be such a delight this year, and I have growing confidence about the D.
OSU is notorious for dropping early season OOC games, especially at home. Virginia Tech, Oklahoma and Oregon have all beaten them in Columbus within the last few years.
I’d take OSU if I had to choose, but that game is by no means automatic.
But they’re “mad” this year, lol.
At least it won’t snow in August.
Not sure if OSU will cover, but - I do think they defeat ND.
Kelly is a unique personality - but, he was pretty creative and smart on offense. IMO, the ND offense may take a half step back this season. Their old OL coach is back after a stint in the NFL - so, the OL performance will improve - I just don’t know if the OL is at a point to move the Bucks DL around.
Ohio St might win. But their D Line isn't what it used to be.
EC, why do you say that re: Ohio’s DL? I don’t necessarily disagree, but I’d like to hear your rationale.
Do you see an impact from that D Line?
That wasn’t my question. You made the assertion, or at least the implication, their D-line was going to get worse. Maybe that’s wishful thinking, or maybe because you spend time studying college football you have opinion formed on fax. Just curious.
You made the assertion, or at least the implication, their D-line was going to get worse.
I didn't imply that.
I see.
I'm only saying that Ohio Sts D Line had more of an impact in years past. It was unusual to see their play last year. It didn't have the impact it usually has. D Line used to be a strength of the defense there. But in the last 2 years, maybe 3, OSU defense has fallen off. They keep making changes at coaching. But it isn't getting better. Maybe Larry Johnson is off his game a little for some reason. I don't know. He is respected as maybe the best D Line coach in all of college. And it was for good reason. That D Line had impact. But that isn't the case the right now.
I don't spend lots of time studying it all. I don't have that kind of time.
Larry Johnson is 70 maybe running on fumes.
okay, i see. that makes sense. and yeah, here's to ohio being a soft as charmin.
soft as charmin, lol
OSUs d-line was weak last year. The talent should be there.
Michigan pushed them all over the field and ran for 7.2 yards per carry and 297 yards.
I think they lost some guys which could be addition through subtraction but their D-line is a question mark until they prove otherwise.
In the Ohio/Notre Shame game I'm rooting for large meteor.
My wife refuses to watch any OSU game with me. She says my comments are way too hateful. I don't understand how any comment about any OSU player, staff, fan, or player's mother/father/sister/handicapped kid brother could possibly be considered "too hateful," but said MGoWife disagrees.
Seems like you married a buckeye or a sympathizer at least.
She's a Michigan fan, but doesn't existentially relate to Bob Ufer's inability to remember the score of the game after Michigan lost to Notre Dame in the classic Ufer collection. To me it makes perfect sense. When Michigan loses, the details really don't matter. All is lost and deep despair need to commence. I just can't relate to people who think minor matters, such as war in Ukraine, starvation, trafficking, pandemics, whatever compare to a Michigan loss.
Great point, and I took the liberty of doing a quick bit of research. A meteor the size of a smaller house would flatten everything in a 1.5 mile radius. That should do it - if it lands on the 50 yard line.
Thery'll never be a better opportunity for god to prove he's up there, yanking on strings, and other things.
ND is going to get pummeled. I expect a 42-10 type score. Not at all convinced about Freeman as HC and ND has major questions at QB and WR. Don’t think ND’s defense will be able to keep up for four quarters.
Michigan plays two of the bottom ten. Weeeeee!
I hope those first 4 games are epic blow outs. It would be fun to see Jayden Denegal get in the 4th Qtr of all those games.
Hell, I hope the first 15 games are all epic blowouts...
I agree. I really don't get it. A totally unproven coach and a program left in semi-turmoil when a long-term head coach suddenly bolts. A program with 4 top 10 finishes in 12 years under the previous guy is still top 10 under those conditions? Seems ridiculous. I'd take OSU in a blowout.
I don't get the semi-turmoil comment. I have no problem seeing that they may take a while to get uncorked under a new regime, but it looks like they've been charging forward on recruiting. Turmoil?
August 12th, 2022 at 11:26 AM ^
Yea, those 2023 freshman will really make a difference soon. The turmoil is that a veteran coach whom no one expected to leave, suddenly bolted. An overlord who'd built a program in his exact image. They then hired a totally unproved assistant who apparently can recruit and everyone likes. His record in college football is 0-1. Hardly the recipe for an unearned top 10 slot. The last assistant they hire was Bob Davies, btw.
I mean the same could be said for OSU a few years ago…Freeman can do a good job there.
Quattro - my “wish” for the final score in the ND - Bucks opener would be…. a seven OT thriller, with a final score of 2-0.
