Bryan Mone making serious money in NFL with Seattle Seahawks contract extension (MLive article)

Money Mone’s new 2 year contract has a base value of $12 million along with a $1.5M signing bonus.  Not a bad payday for an undrafted free agent back in 2019. Congrats Bryan!

DB wasn't good with Dline players imo.  He misused alot during his time here.   He also didn't play to his players strengths and made them fit into his system instead of making his system work for the players.   Have to have a system that you can adjust to your players to be a truly successful coach long term.

Your points are quite true, but DB has been very successful for a long time and at different levels with that same defense bending the players to it.  It's a great defense for undermanned teams because it puts a premium on the back half, where it's far easier to find athleticism.  His problem at Michigan was that he failed to keep up with offenses that figured it out and had the personnel to exploit it after seeing it a couple of times.  And he also stopped recruiting top end players...  WTF?

But the main point is that he didn't adjust his defense to the players he had.  Nor did he ever adjust to the players he could have had...

He has a really good scheme but several faults are easily exposed.

1  Alignment Assignment were an issue day 1, ie safety over slot rec, easily exposed by a good OC esp if he had an elite rec over a safety, mismatch all day.  Colorado first to expose it.

2   Technique, shading of db/s, the indiana game and subsequent osu game in 2018 exposed this, ie the crossing route games but first given major fits that season vs nw.  Shading/jamming, bumping at the los, shade to the inside to force and outside release takes the timing away from these routes and gives the dline an extra second.

3  Levels of defenders in coverage.  No db should be on the same level esp on the same side of the ball in twins/trips coverage.  IE the easy pic, cut on the back heals of a defender osu was doing.

4  Communication, this is caused by all db’s on the same level, they can’t see each other to call out the cross, the clear out or cut.

5  Free release mentioned in 2 but osu made a living on the inside clear out rec blocking or pic plays on defenders.  Blocking down field was a penalty not called all game as was pic, but two things led to this all game long.  Not jamming the interior rec which is common in the NFL or middle rec of a trips formation to destroy the timing and release.  And the levels not there to call it out.  Just horrible to not adjust to all game long.

6  Zone, Man in zone or banjo, going to 3 deep/ 4 deep quarters coverage just to disguise what the defense is doing and line up in the same look to jump into a man or vise versa.

Many didn’t realize but MacDonald did many similar things in hs defense but added the above.

Alignment assignment, elite receivers put into the slot got an elite db in Dax Hill…

Levels, never did you see all db’s in man coverage all at the same level right up on the LOS, or on the same level as the Lber, all levels were 1 or 2 yds different so they could communicate, hence whey they never called crossing routes against his defense.

Technique, they bumped, sometimes jammed, sometimes 1 or 2 yds off the los, sometimes 5-8yds off the los and an offense didn’t know if the defense was in zone based off a 5 or 8yd set by the db. Shaded inside and no free release to the inside when on the LOS,

Don Brown dline did not help the DT’s at all where as Mike MacDonald emphasized them, the better they did the better the Mlber and DE’s did.  It forced offenses to protect the interior, ie inside out football.  Don Brown tried to make pressure the star, ie de’s and blitzes but MacDonald wanted the defense through the middle first and that would control the LOS and allow the pressure to work regardless.

That’s awesome. Mone got this one the hard way between college injuries, making the Seahawks as a UDFA, working his way up the depth chart.

Well deserved!

The way I describe it is that Brown wanted versatile players that he could leave in all downs and do creative things with.  Guys like Hurst, Henry, Wormley, etc.  He didn't want one guys More one-dimensional such as run stuffing or pass rushing who can get caught on the field in the wrong situational defense.  I think that theory is also supported by the way he like to use his viper and his desire to have corners and safeties interchangeable where possible.

When it comes to defensive tackles that resulted in brown wanting guys that he could mix and match for different situations and not 330 lb run stuffers that had to be subbed off every other down. So it is true he recruited the guys you mentioned, but he wanted them playing under 300 lb so they could be more versatile.

But it wouldn't be a Michigan sports blog if people didn't over accentuate the narrative

Mazi Smith was recruited by Greg Mattison and Sherrone Moore.  Chris Hinton was recruited by Chris Partridge.  And Rayshaun Benny was recruited by Sherrone Moore and Shaun Nua.

As the DC, Don Brown was certainly involved and let's not forget that he was personally involved in Aidan Hutchinson's recruitment as well as Aubrey Solomon, but he certainly seemed to be more interested in getting a bunch of viper types as opposed to a bunch of big guys to plug the middle.

I personally think Don Brown has fairly earned his reputation.  His defensive style involved a certain amount of gambling that worked great against mediocre offenses but got exposed against multi-dimensional offenses.

"...but got exposed against multi-dimensional offenses."

This isn't entirely true.  His really good defenses at Michigan - 2016-2018 - didn't get 'exposed' so much as they got beat by Harbaugh's offense.  I mean, the best defense in the nation in 2016, top 5 in 2017, and top 20 in 2018...  Nobody moved the ball easily on those guys.  The 2017 defense got eaten alive by PSU, but the Harbaughffense didn't help one teeny bit in that game.

The 2019 and 2020 teams were exposed and crapped on because he flat refused to recruit top end players that wanted some attention and couldn't adjust to high end offenses that figured him out.

I think I remember something about Mone having a brother who was disabled.  Good to know he'll have plenty of financial means to support himself and his whole family
