Sucks but makes sense with our defensive turmoil

The 247 scouting report kind of aligns with this.

Long levered, thick linebacker with bulk to naturally play in the middle and the frame to potentially grow into an edge rusher. Pops on tape with his physicality and violence on contact. One of the hardest hitters in the 2021 recruiting cycle. Plays with great effort and motor. Attacks blockers with physicality. Efforts to re-route receiving threats. Good range between the tackles, thanks in part to wing span. Bends well for a bigger linebacker but does show some stiffness in space. Looks heavy-footed at times and is a long strider that takes some build-up to find a top speed in pursuit. Can get exposed in coverage. Physically imposing inside linebacker that has some projectablility to move down to the line of scrimmage. Power Five starter with NFL Draft upside.

It seems like Somerville is next.  This class isn’t going to be #9 unless there are some unexpected commitments. But as Brian said “Always look on the bright side of life”. The offensive class is strong

Yeah, I don't know much about Somerville but re-reading his Hello post you do see a trend of recruiters being a little more suspect of his potential the longer they evaluated him, to the point that he was pegged as "just" a P5 starter toward the end and people wondering about his athleticism.  I think he'll be a solid player, but the fact he is apparently going to UCLA does point to him perhaps moving down some boards.  Obviously UM would like to have him and I wish him luck, but this doesn't feel like a death blow the way other guys might feel like.

Not a shocker.

This is going to be a rough transition since Harbaugh fell on his face so badly(sucks but it is what it is).  One class isn't going to cause the program to succeed or fail as long as they get the big picture right.  The story of the program's future is going to play out over the next month and not the next couple of days.

That said, hope the Defensive Ends currently on the roster develop and get ready to ball out.

Also, what kids are playing before they're ready? We had walk-on seniors playing at two different positions on defense the last time we saw the team on the field. If anything, one criticism has been that Harbaugh has been unwilling to give young guys a shot (Mazi, McGregor, Seldon, etc.).

I think part of the problem is that guys like Smith haven't really developed; he let Hinton play super-early and has let first-year guys see the field.  He tried Smith a couple of times the past 2 years and he's not impressed, which is understandable but also makes sense why he doesn't see the field.  And McGregor is coming off a pretty awful injury; my guess is they are all trying to figure out if he's quite ready given recovery times and him having to get back into the flow.

My point is that Michigan appears to have been a reason to back out from FSU. When he committed, everyone and their brother was surprised, so this makes sense.

Obviously I would have liked to have him in the class, but he wasn't a cornerstone decommitment like Somerville appears to be.

Good luck with that. In the long run everything that comes with graduating from UM would be far superior to Maryland, but I can't blame him one bit for not wanting to be a part of the apparent culture mess of this football program.

Not a knock to the young man but Michigan didn't lose anything because we never had him.  Wasn't signed and you can't bank on every verbal.

Hope we can flip a player or 2.  Likely because of the pandemic, this recruiting season has been quite.

Mike Locksley has always been known as a hell of a recruiter so this makes sense in a way.

The question of whether or not he can actually coach his players up is certainly a matter for debate, but the guy can recruit.
