Booing Cade Is Bad.

Submitted by BostonWolverine on September 11th, 2022 at 11:58 AM

I know this has been discussed already, but I think it deserves its own topic. Mods, if you disagree, feel free to remove it.

Yes, it's clear that JJ is the guy. I have hoped he would be for the better part of the last year.

That said, there is absolutely no reason for the booing and "We want JJ" chants last night from the crowd. Cade McNamara is a Michigan Wolverine, and that should be the end of it. But the thing is, it's NOT the end of it, because he's also a B1G Champion and took us to the Playoff last year.

You can believe JJ should be the starter without this weird disdain for McNamara. Honestly, it's pathetic. Harbaugh needs to say something in the presser today. This should never have happened.

100% agree.

Yes, it looks like JJ is the guy.  And I am excited about the possibilities. But Cade did something that QB's since 2004 haven't done, even great ones like Denard: He won a Big Ten Championship.  He has earned nothing but respect from us the fanbase.  Doubly so because he handles himself with class and possesses real leadership skills.  (He is also one injury away from being the starter again.)

Not saying your thread needs to be deleted, but what is there really to say or discuss? Between mgoblog, twitter, and the cfb and michigan subreddits, I haven't seen a single online UM fan argue that Cade deserved to be booed. Literally every single comment is a variation on "Sure, JJ has earned it, but Cade deserves respect for 2021, and booing him is classless."

It happened, it can't be undone. No need to self-flagellate for the next week for something we didn't do or agree with.

If you think putting a thread is going to change the minds of drunk fans who have been tailgating all day, then I don't know what to tell you. We all agree. Booing is bad. Cade deserves better. But, Twitter is a cesspool. So are drunk fans. Nothing is going to change that. Even Harbaugh saying it.

We can't even control or change the minds of some on this board not to shit on Cade. Given, there is just a few.

I will be surprised if these things bother Cade. Wait till JJ creates an adversity. There will be people saying stuff like, man we should have had Cade. People are fickle. Anyway, hope for JJ to have a great season and Cade be able to meaningfully contribute in games so they both had a hand in a great season.

I think it's already pretty clear that these things are bothering Cade. And also, whether or not it changes minds, it's still important to say the thing out loud.

There are some things that should go left unsaid. "It's bad to boo our B1G-winning, CFP Quarterback" doesn't seem like one of them to me.

Uh, it's the internet.

I don't think it needs to be said that we shouldn't have to worry about kids bringing guns to school and murdering classmates and teachers...but after it happens, you'll find plenty of people saying that you shouldn't have to worry about it happening.

Sometimes I think it's okay to state the obvious. Unlike my over the top school example, in this case, I'm willing to bet there were some people who thought it WAS cool or funny or they hadn't thought it all the way through as they booed, cracked jokes, etc.

May have been a minority who booed, but I know these messages boards were FILLED with people creating this either or, JJ vs. Cade drama that every fed into.

It's that type of atmosphere that give that minority the comfort to be fucking idiots.

You're not going to go to a stadium and yell certain things, because you're probably going to get your ass kicked...that's because there is no tolerance for whatever that "thing" is. If you yell something blatantly racist at Michigan Stadium, people, at a minimum are going to tell you to STFU, sit down, and that's not cool. At the other end, someone is going to sock you in the face.

Clearly Michigan fans created an atmosphere where plenty of people felt it was okay. Even people who didn't boo contributed to that atmosphere and that also should be called out. We let people feel comfortable and when it happened, people laughed it off.

Is it racism? No, another extreme example. But everything doesn't have to be extreme to be right from wrong. And CLEARLY that behavior was wrong.

It's good to point out the shameful idiots and good to show support here. The players read this site and certainly pay attention to other socials. So, the more we shout down the idiots the better. It can't be undone, but it can be curtailed going forward. And these types of threads show support for Cade.

Sure but this will (and clearly already is) being blown up into a bigger issue than it is. It's not as if the entire stadium was doing it but a small section that will exist in every fanbase. It is what it is. I was there and people are talking as if the entire stadium was uproariously booing him, calling for JJ and wishing a pox upon his house.

They weren't, they didn't. In all actuality it was more booing the play than Cade himself. The call for JJ lasted about 10 seconds and I almost everyone around me was very complimentary of Cade and rooting him on. I and others actively upset when an OL basically whiffed on pass pro leading to a sack, etc.

This isn't an issue beyond saying that, yes, people wishing ill for him and booing are trash.

I mean, any kind of negative talk about him is really odd to me. He was great in 2020 and even better in 2021. He will probably transfer at the end of the year and be great wherever he goes. The booing makes no sense. Are people that addicted to excitement that booing is their reaction to a great QB that isn't as exciting as they guy they want, even though that player was a great player for them?

I think anyone who had a decent season as a starting Michigan QB should be Lionized.  (Celebrated not forced to play on the Lions.)

Devin Gardener seems to get the respect he deserves and obviously Denard gets mad props,  but I think Forcier, Speight, Shea, and even Shane Morris and Brandon Peters deserve respect.  Hell, even John O’korn, David Cone and Nick Sheridan deserve a lot of thanks.

Trashing someone if they get beat out is garbage. We will need a fully functioning Cade at some point this season.

People need to relax.  A bunch of drunken students around midnight is nothing to get worked up about.  Coach won't even be referencing this in a press conf.  Stop giving it any more legs than it deserves.

WayOfTheRoad

Exactly this. It was minor and will happen at every venue where kids and morons can gather to watch sport. Add alcohol and it happens a bit more.

The way some are talking as if the entire stadium was doing it or throwing things at him is really disingenuous at best and actively trying to start a fight from nothing at worst.

Disagree. Call out bullshit when you see it and hope it doesn't repeat itself.

All you're doing is enabling.

By posting on a message board, no one is doing anything over the top or excessive, lol.

You act like there is a surveillance investigation into who booed.

That attitude is dangerous.

Hail Harbo

Harbaugh should not address it unless asked and if asked make it a general statement.  The last thing McNamara needs is a pity party headed by the coach.

On a related note, watching the post game activities the camera caught McNamara a couple of times and he seemed to really being enjoying himself.  It's almost like he now understands the changing of the guard, his new role on the team, and is comfortable with it.

The person booing isn’t the knowledgeable fan on mgoblog. They are people who go to a game and know nothing more about the team except for what they are seeing right then and there.

It was quite the thoughtless thing for any M fan to boo him.

If you didn't expect it you're new to sports. I bet Brady was booed at times for Henson. I can't remember but I know Navarre heard his shares too. There's loyal fans and there's Walmart fans who demand the best regardless.

I was someone who was rooting for Cade to have one last hurrah as the starter in 2022, perhaps even a good enough season to get drafted in the middle rounds next year. Now I'm all for pushing forward with JJ. We may very well need Cade yet due to the way JJ plays. Who knows if one of those physical runs ends poorly at any moment...No matter your opinion, don't be gross about it because those are two of our guys out there and they're both valuable to this team.

MgoHillbilly

It's just booing. Doesn't seem to bother Roger Goodell at all.

I boo my own kid when he screws up a play in football or misses a shot in bball.

I actually do but it's a running joke with him. He laughs and takes it in stride when he sees me smiling and giving him a thumbs down. (I wouldn't do it at all if he weren't so self-assured.)

On the Cade stuff though, that sucks. No player should get boos from his own fanbase if they're out there giving it their best. It would be different if it looked like a player or coach was mailing it in. That stuff would make me boo.

This is unfortunately the norm for fanbases in this day and age of social media, talk radio etc. Obviously its a small percentage. It's wrong but there is nothing to be done. Just accept it and move on. You need tough skin to play big time sports or really do anything in these times. No one is safe.  We have collectively lost our ways as a society.

I call bullshit on this ‘kids these days’ nonsense. Michigan’s fanbase (and those from every other team/school/club) has ALWAYS included some assholes. If you think booing Cade is some massive indictment of today’s society, what about the people sending racist letters and threatening the Fab 5? If you actually take the time to consider the relative seriousness of both situations, you’d be absolutely kidding yourself if you think fans today are worse.

Edit: none of this is to say that it was ok to boo Cade. It wasn’t, and the people who did are assholes who should feel bad about themselves.

I’ve been to two games. I have had total idiots around me both games. The ones who give the fandom the bad name. Booing was inevitable because these idiots can get in.
