Best Podcasts

I've recent discovered this amazing thing called podcasts.  As a 26 year old, this makes me the Worst Millenial Ever.  This post aims to rectify that (not the "worst ever", just the ignorance.  I relish the title.)

What suggestions do you have for good podcasts, besides the obvious mgopodcast?  Good sports ones?  Good entertainment ones?  Ideally, I'd love to find a good finance/mathematics one, or one on healthcare/insurance, but I feel the topic isn't really one that would be fun.  The SOA podcast, for example, is terrible.

Last year we had a pretty good discussion on this as well.  Hopefully we get some new ideas of podcasts that've sprung up in the interrm.

I miss Clay Travis being on 104.5 the Zone out of Nashville, I was glad to find this. It's nice to have a guy that says exactly what he thinks without dressing it up or apologizing. Some of his stuff is off the wall but still fun to listen to, and other people's reactions are great.

My favorites (mostly politics):

  • Meet the Press (they post their full Sunday show in podcast form)
  • The Daily (20 minutes on NYT's headlines)
  • NPR hourly news summary (the best 5-minute quick news update I've found)
  • The Axe Files with David Axelrod (hour-long interview between David Axelrod and a political figure from Sean Spicier to Barack Obama)
  • Intelligence Squared (hour-long debate on a newsy/controversial topic)
  • This American Life (duh)
  • MgoPodcast (duh)
  • Michigan Insider (podcast version of Sam's daily show)

The Drew and Mike Podcast. These guys dominated Detroit morning radio for two decades and are now back on a podcast, albeit without Mike Clark for now due to an illness. Drew Lane is joined most shows by Marc Fellhauer. Not in any way to be construed as "deep" topically, the show is best when they are discussing local news and sports and can be very funny if not sophomoric. What's different now is they are on a podcast so they can take off the gloves in terms of the content and the language they use. I find it entertaining in the car as I cannot listen to local radio anymore--it is all completely awful.

SYSK is great.  Pick out a handful of episodes and boom, informative entertainment for an entire roadtrip.  You'll arrive at your destination at least moderately informed on the Large Hadron Collider, or shopping malls, or fireplaces, or Easter Island, or Evel Knievel, etc... you get the idea.

LA CHEESARIE!  +1 for Tony Kornheiser Show.  That show is extremely entertaining.  The majority of the show is "old man yelling at cloud" type stuff.  So funny.  He wants it to be a local show so they talk a lot about DC centric sports but it's very well done.  He has deep connections throughout the city and it shows.  Such a great show.  Purple line!

If you like the NBA Bill Simmons podcasts are gold. He also talks about football and entertainment, but overall really enjoyable.

Also if you are looking for a something educational that is non sports related, you should check out Malcolm Gladwell's Revisionist History. They are extremely well produced and he spends months making them.

I too love the Dan Carlin podcasts. The British History Podcast is even better. And it's weekly so you're not waiting for 3 months for a new episode. I pay for a membership on his. And while Carlin's old HCHs are behind a paywall you can have all of BHP for free so there's a year's worth of listening without waiting. BHP's fiancee recently started Decode the News. She did her PhD on this but the show is still getting its legs under it. The other podcast like that is History of Rome. That is complete and the author is on his 6th season of another great podcast, Revolutions. Also Dak n Dunc Show. How was this not mentioned yet?
