Beilein says UM not interested in the CBI

Per Mike Rothstein:

I have to say that's kind of dumb on his part if you ask me. This team obviously has a lot of work to do, and it seems like playing games is the way to do it. I don't think we're really in a position to be high and mighty about the opportunity to play games.

This is as short-sighted as declining a minor bowl game by thinking you're too good for it. A bowl games means another 3-4 weeks of practice, and by playing in even just the CBI, you're going to give your team a few more weeks of practice for next season, just like the teams in the NIT and the NCAAs. Turning down the CBI is starting your preparations for next season at a competitive disadvantage.

This is an inconsistent team that has lost its confidence. How is playing in the CBI going to help? Do you really think that they will stay consistent enough to win it? Remember, this is a team that lost to Indiana, Penn State, twice to NW, needed OT to win at Iowa, ect. This team needs time away from games to build confidence back, not losing in the 2nd round to S. Florida.

I guess if Beilein believes it would do more harm than good to play, then so be it. But when I played basketball, I always wanted one more game. Granted, I didn't play at the college level, and my team never got dismantled on national television, but still.

Yeah, it's a little lame as far as postseason tournaments go, it's not an ideal situation, and it's fodder for the RCMB types. If invited, though, don't know how extra games are a negative.

The reason those extra practices are so valuable in football is because you can take a closer look and give more reps to the youngsters who might have been overlooked in the regular season. It's not the same with basketball. This season just needs to be over anyway.

I don't disagree with the practice issue, but man, I paid good money for a season ticket to this season, I invested emotionally in it, and to quit when there's a chance to keep playing and potentially win something (as small as it may be) is lame.

Besides, we could run Novak at the 2 exclusively and get Vogrich some badly needed minutes, so at least we could be trying something.

This looks like a university decision, not a team decision. Does that change your opinion at all?

Perhaps the tune from Beilein about the CBI will change if/when we officially are eliminated from the NCAA/NIT discussion.

Hypothetically, I think this decision should come down to the players and coach, and I have no idea what they think about it.

If it were up to me, we would absolutely participate. As other people have mentioned, it's additional practice time, gives us an opportunity for another banner (regardless of how mock-able it is), allows Sims, Gibson, and Wright to potentially go out on a more positive note, and possibly allows us to see what our team could potentially look like next year (Novak and Douglass at wing instead of 4 and 1, respectively).

I understand the potential negative of our team lacking in confidence and entering another tournament simply prolonging the pain, but I don't think this team is as confidence-shot and war-worn as is speculated - those types of teams don't completely dominate bubble-worthy teams (Minnesota).

I compulsively downvote any usage of "lol".

I don't know how much better this team is going to get from playing poor-mediocre teams at best. I played basketball and you will not get better by playing inferior competition, not to mention our team will look a bit different next year.

We are a "poor-mediocre" team. Who could we play that is that much inferior?

I'd be interested to see how the subject was brought up. Part of his job as coach is to keep his players' heads up and despite yesterday's disaster I am sure he is still pushing this team to go out and win the B10 tournament. Saying you are interested in the CBI would come off as deflating to me if I was a player.

Until the B10 is over, it's early to embrace consolation prizes. Maybe it'll be a different story after everything is done shaking out.

I think every team just needs to take a break from basketball and clear their head. These guys should not be shooting this bad.

I think Harris and Novak will always be inconsistent jumpshooters. They have a lot of moving parts on their shots. Douglass I have no explanation for. At least on TV, he looks like he has basically textbook form. He ought to be making a lot more shots on a regular basis. His problem might just be mental.

This has nothing to do with Michigan football.
