Beaver Comments/Already Enrolled at Tulsa?/Mom?

Submitted by Rush N Attack on
From the Tulsa World article if anyone cares: “It’s about who you’re going to be with over the next four years,” Beaver said on Friday, adding that proximity played a big role. “I was impressed with how (the Tulsa coaches) carried themselves. They told me everything that was offered, and everything they said made sense.” Beaver said TU coach Todd Graham discussed the importance of growing as a person away from the football field, an emphasis that Michigan didn’t approach. It made a difference, the player said. Beaver completed high school on Friday and plans to enroll at TU next month. He’ll battle with Jacob Bower and GJ Kinne during spring drills, with all eyes on the vacant starting position next fall. “The coaches told me I could compete right away,” said Beaver, who threw for 2,545 yards and rushed for more than 400. “No offense to Bower and GJ Kinne, but they’re going to have to fight every single day because I like to fight every single day.” Also this: "KAUZ Sports learned Rider Senior quarterback Shavodrick Beaver has decommitted from the University of Michigan and verbally committed to the University of Tulsa! Beaver says he felt more comfortable going to the Golden Hurricanes than the Wolverines! in fact, he has already enrolled at Tulsa and will take clases next month! "In the recruiting process, you have to be selfish and do what's best for you! It's really about the family and not worrying about going far away sometimes!" says Shavodrick Beaver." WOW. And lastly: "I have changed my commitment to Tulsa," Beaver told the Rivals.com site. "Coach Graham, Coach Malzahn and Coach Hand visited with me and my mother today, and it was important to my mother that I go to Tulsa. "It's about family, faith and friends. I needed to go to Tulsa. Tulsa is all about family. They have great support there with the coaches, team and university. Picking a school is not all about the logo."

seems to be the theme of the day, uh season, uh decade. This sounds to me like he wants to fight just not against Forcier. Does anyone else believe that this is about who he'll become over the next 4 years? This is about playing early. If you play early in conference USA you are going to be ok. If you play early in the Big Ten, you may leave with a concussion, a la mcguffie. If yer skeered, say skeered! Puss...

I said this in another thread, but this isn't about Beaver being "scared" of playing in the Big Ten (11) or playing behind Forcier.  There's no way that's the case.  He is one of a very very very select few High School players who are recognized as "elite".  He does not lack for confidence.  Don't think for a second that this kid is a wuss or a "Puss" as you call him.  That's weak sauce there sir.

He decided to stay at home.  It's not that complicated.  Sure, he made a mistake by committing to Michigan and we're all pissed.  Hell, I'm pissed too.  It sucks balls to lose him.  But it's his choice and his choice alone.  At some point he'll realize that instead of playing in front of 100,000 fans he'll be playing in front of 30,000 or how ever the hell many fans Tulsa gets.

At Tulsa? Has he been to Tulsa? Ahahahahahaha.

(assuming this was an actual motivating factor). He will find out pretty damn quick that the only off field factor that matters is academics - something to fall back on when the NFL thing doesn't pan out. "Growing as a person" or whatever flowery bullshit he ate up is about the emptiest line I can think of. Unless the coach is personally involving you in some bad elements, he can't affect the choices a kid makes off the field...aside from imposing strict penalties on those that fuck up.

I hate how everyone on this board treats the kids like babies, they can be assholes and pussies regardless of age, 17 and 18 is not THAT young. Some of them actually are assholes. I do think it is an asshole thing the way he went about it, call it like it is. If he's offended, then good, he can't go around doing that when he's older. You gotta learn sometime.

I hate the need to JUDGEJUDGEJUDGE people we know virtually nothing about. It seems as if he pulled a dick-move. It appears as if his family wanted him closer to home. In that case, it probably should have been an issue before now. But you know what? People make mistakes, and people don't always do the right thing. I don't, and I'm sure you don't. The difference is that when I fuck up, or your fuck up, we don't have thousands of people screaming about how we're assholes. So shrug it off, and move on.

No offense, but I DON'T GET YOU. Do you just hate most of the other posters on here? Do you think they are all stupid? Do you just think we should all think the exact same way? You say you hate the need to JUDGEJUDGEJUDGE, yet you JUDGE other posters on here continuously. You must have deemed the posted opinion by mctip "subpar", since you posted a reply telling him what he should do. I mean, can't you just "shrug" his post "off, and move on"? Like you said: "It SEEMS as if he pulled a dick-move." Why do you have a problem with a fellow Michigan fan that has a problem with said "dick-move"? OBVIOUSLY, no one, but Beaver himself knows the full details of his recruitment. I think we all get that, and I'm sure most normal Michigan fans ARE moving on. But can't a Michigan fan get upset about anything? For the record: The de-commitment doesn't bother me. He can go to school wherever he wants. Even though (for selfish reasons) I would have LOVED for him to come here and play, I don't harbor the kid any ill-will. I also don't have a problem with fellow Michigan fans like mctip who DOES have a problem with it. Hell, I don't even really have a problem with you calling out mctip. (I mean, it's a blog for goodness sake). But I guess my point is, I just don't get your motivation. You spend half the time on these awesome posts, where I'm like: "Amen!", and the other half of the time bitching at other posters (....paging Magnus). You SEEM to get hyper-defensive about certain things, and I'm not sure why. And since you can't read the tone in a post...let me be clear, this is not in anger, so I don't need a chill pill or anything like that. I'm calm. I actually think you're one of the better posters on here when you are not bitching people out. Why? Because you usually have some facts or reasoning behind your arguments, even when I disagree with them. But can't we all have different opinions? (I'd rather someone say something completely idiotic on here, so at least I know where they stand). And again, let me point out, these are your fellow Michigan fans on here. We are not the enemy. Oh, and thank you RushingAttack for at least posting some actual quotes from Beaver, so we can get a better insight as to why this happened. (Isn't that what we all do...we take in information, and form an opinion based on that information?)

Long story short, I don't like the idea of making attacks on people we know nothing about because of their choice of college. In high school, I was in a position where I actually was good enough at a sport where a few schools wanted me to attend. Now - it wasn't football or hoops, so I didn't have legions of people following me or anything, but there were a handful (15? 20?) of people that did care, and did try to influence my decision - many for reasons that really had nothing to do with me. I chose to go to Michigan over a school that is, technically, academically "better". And some of the people I disappointed used that as a reason to jump to conclusions about me. SO, when I see a kid making his decision about where to go to school, and thousands of people taking a vested interest in him, I have some sympathy for him. I'm not supporting the way in which Beaver seems to have gone about it (making a visit under the cover of night, having his mom decommit for him) - because it sucks. But if he decided that being closer to home was important to him (about 50% of what I believe) or that he'd have a better chance at playing at Tulsa (the other 50%), then who am I to criticize that? If you don't do what's best for you, you can't trust the jackals associated with college football to have your back. It seems to me that the way he did it lacks maturity. But he's 18 years old - he's hardly unique in that fact.

Although we are, in most ways, ideologically opposed, you do a good job of synthesizing info and making good points ... despite your political handicap ... and I agree here for the most part. However, a man of 18 years has had plenty of time to refine himself into a man who conducts himself with honor, integrity, honesty, and general decency. Just because most 18 year olds in this country, in this era, are far more immature than their ancestors were at that age, does not mean it is excusable. But this young man's true colors have shown, and with his flight from glory we arrive at a mutually beneficial arrangement. "Who the cap fit, let them wear it." I, for one, will call no foul.

Wait - what? You're not really a socialist? Dang, I was really getting all fired up for the joust with Ernis - "good luck fighting cold steel with just a pinko humidor, Fidel!" But alas, for naught. At least I didn't bother finishing my Moor avatar...

I found this quote interesting: "In the recruiting process, you have to be selfish and do what's best for you! It's really about the family and not worrying about going far away sometimes!" says Shavodrick Beaver." So ... To be selfish = all about the family Not sure how to equivocate it. Not going to try. Just gonna chalk it up to either a misquote or cognitive dissonance.

I think it's pretty clear from his own words that it came down to a decision on his part that he didn't think he would win the starting job at Michigan and would (or at least had a good chance to) at Tulsa. So be it.

via Sam Webb this morning on WTKA. He said that the Michigan coaches actually visited Shavodrick on Monday and that he told them everything was great. Sam also said that he was rumored to have gone to visit Tulsa, and that Beaver said he just went to watch a practice. Sam said it turns out it was his official visit. Lastly, he said that Beaver's mom called the U of M coaches on Friday, and told them, so yes, they were taken off-guard. Trust me, I'm over it. Good luck at Tulsa. Just providing an update from Sam Webb this morning. Take it FWIW.

I don't like the fact that his MOM called the coaches. But whatever. Good luck. He'll probably do great at Tulsa actually. Didn't they have a really highly rated qb this year?
