Balas says Sainristil Moving to CB

Submitted by Steve Breaston… on February 17th, 2022 at 10:42 PM

According to TheWolverine and Chris Balas, Mike Sainristil is making the move from WR to CB given the loaded depth of the room.

I could paste the link here but I’ll get yelled at for not paying attention in “Embedding on MGoBlog 101” so someone help a dude out.

Credit to him for not transferring; he'd absolutely get a shot on other P5 teams as a WR.  Hopefully he can make some hay at corner.  He's definitely fast enough.

If there is any actual truth to this, my guess is you are correct.  I'd be pretty surprised if Sainristil is actually playing CB by fall camp.

Or this is some overblown Balas interpretation of a Harbaugh/Staff comment, something like "We really like what Mikey brings to playing out there as a corner on special teams, we might look to explore how to expand his usage going forward."

I'm not a fan of that. He's a great blocker and can make some great catches. I like him in the slot a lot, and I don't think him riding the bench at corner is a better use of his talents.

I checked Balas’ twitter and saw nothing but maybe I didn’t scroll enough?

Hope it’s not true.  Sweetness plays fearlessly at WR and on it sure why you would waste that on development at another position

Given probability of injuries and Mikes speed, Id think its in preparation to Michigan's capability to answer OSU,s passing game. If pressure is diminished up front we need to be sure we have a smart fast backend.

I made a comment a few weeks ago that received a little backlash when I speculated that it wouldn't shock me if we lose another WR besides Baldwin because of how deep the position was.  Sanristil was the name that worried me, not because I have any info or because he isn't great to have on the roster....but he's just the odd man out.  He's a good blocker, good for a couple good catches here and there, too short to play outside and not a difference maker on the inside.

He would be a fantastic veteran leader, depth piece, and special team player to have.  He also might decide in the spring to find somewhere he isn't sharing snaps with Bell, Wilson, CJ, Anthony, Henning and the TEs.

As for CB....by all means give him a chance there.  Why not?  Especially if he sticks around.  That being said, can anyone remember a late career position switch like this working?

Ronnie Bell, Cornelius Johnson, Andrel Anthony, AJ Henning, Roman Wilson, Christian Dixon, Darius Clemons, Amorian Walker, Tyler Morris is the WR room..

This move makes a lot of sense for Sainristil.  His speed/athleticism are great for corner and dude is strong/physical.  Definitely has the hips/feet and physicality to play the position.

Betting Clink is happy as hell with this move!

It's hard to know what to make of this. Is it more of a "soft" transition to see what happens during spring ball just because the wr room is packed? Could he really be the odd man out and not have a shot at playing much at wr?

I also find it odd because wr is one of those positions you can be a star (ok, maybe not a start but damn good) in a pretty deep rotation. For CB there isn't a whole lot of rotating and I just can't see a world where MS gets much action.

I mean.... Wino moved around a bit (LB/TE/DE) and things worked out pretty well for him.   The coaches are moving him to CB, I'm guessing there a better chance he gets playing time there and has the skills needed.

Considering the source, I will believe it when I see it. He is an excellent WR and it is hard to imagine someone taking a position switch this late in their career when they can transfer.

I’ve also expected and still expect to see at least one WR move due to the depth. I was thinking more along the lines of a transfer, but switching to D is an interesting option.

Still a little surprised given Sainristil’s blocking and usage last year, but you have to wonder if he/they expect Bell to take a lot of those snaps.

Maybe we see Johnson/Anthony battling for the top spot on the outside with Bell and Wilson at the other two spots. Henning will still figure in on end arounds and like plays.

Sainristil can attempt to crack a rebuilding secondary and worst case scenario we all know he’s capable of switching back and being a real contributor on offense if an injury occurs or even if the defensive switch doesn’t work out.

I wonder if Bell will try to return to his return duties or if they’ll want to just continue to let Henning handle that.

Clemons is the really interesting new piece to me though. He’s physically different than we we already have on the roster. We’ll see how quickly he acclimates to college.

I don't get this. Sainristil is a great blocker and a nice upperclassman receiver to have. Moving him to CB this late in his career especially given DJ Turner and Will Johnson likely starting is odd. We must really need depth at CB

I saw this yesterday, but it said to Safety.     Wasn't he recruited by Va Tech on the defensive side?

Either way, if he is switching now, it is solely because he knows he won't make NFL at wr but has a good chance on defense.   Look to Gentry who knew he wasn't making it at QB and went to TE, based on Harbaugh's advice.

If it's happening, it's not necessarily permanent. Harbaugh likes to cross-train players in spring all the time, and he likes to put seniors with good attitudes around young players. The CB room lost a lot of guys (and could lose more) because everyone knows there are freshmen who have a good shot to play over upperclassmen. Bolstering that room with a guy like Sainristil serves the room, and serves Sainristil, who has the best player on the team (Ronnie Bell) moving into Sainristil's role (starting slot).

If there's a question of whether he's going to safety or cornerback that reads to me like they are going to try him in the Dax Hill role, which makes sense since he played opposite that spot on offense, and my 27 tickets was projecting a true freshman there.
