B1G Tourney Indy and CoronaVirus

Submitted by fishgoblue1 on March 11th, 2020 at 8:57 AM

So as of this morning the Indiana Governor says that they have no plans to cancel large gatherings.  Use common sense and take precautions.

For those coming to Indy, O`Reilly`s is the designated Michigan bar.  It is probably the best location of all of the team bars.  Only a block or so from the stadium.

If you haven't come to Indy for this event in the past, I can tell you the city does it right.  Hope to see a lot of UM fans here tomorrow.

That’s an impressive amount of I in one paragraph. Perhaps you could take a moment to think about other people. People over 60, people’s parents and grand parents, people with long term health issues, people who need medical care for other issues when the healthcare system is over loaded.

”if It happens it happens” sounds like you are planning on taking zero precautions. That’s selfish. You don’t have to stop everything you are doing but everyone should be taking reasonable precautions to help out.

This is the point of delaying spread. Not that it will prevent you from getting it - it's going to infect a lot of us. most of us will be totally fine if and when it does. But without delayed spread, viruses can spike and overwhelm resources. "You" will be fine, in all likelihood.

Ok so here's my situation.  My 15 year old, who hasnt missed a day of school this year and has had a recent flue shot woke up this morning complaining of not feeling well.  He has a dry cough, said his chest hurt and was running a low grade fever.  Up to about 3 weeks ago I would've simply written it off as a cold but now......what if?  His symptoms check all the boxes of initial infection so it's a bit concerning - especially since I'm 60, male and have respiratory issues thanks to 25 years of smoking and whooping cough as a baby.

As of now we're treating it as we would normally but we're definitely watching him closely.  And I'm trying like hell to not "talk myself" into feeling bad even though I've suddenly got an intermittent dry cough this morning I didnt have yesterday.

There have been several strains of different influenza this year that the flu shot did not protect against.  My wife's school was cancelled for two days earlier this year due to a school-wide Influeza A outbreak that the shot did not protect against.  So I would not conclude that it is Covid 19 simply because it fits the symptoms, a lot of things fit the symptoms.

I certainly would have him evaluated, though. Frankly, I really don't think that the advice of a doctor will be all that different than it would be otherwise.  I don't think there is a lot they can do about it, and if the symptoms it is causing are thus far mild, I think you will be treating it about the same way as you would a mild flu that will pass.  I doubt they will even give him a test for it at this pointing, I still don't think most facilities have testing supplies and they probably aren't going to test if their advice would be the same i.e. having the flu.

I am certainly, very certainly not a doctor though, so I would see one.  Sorry about your situation, that would be a little unsettling.

echo Mean Joe here. get checked out - could be a cold or flu and not COVID but if you have risk factors better to know early and get medical care. Might be scary to go and might feel like you're making something out of nothing - i get that, i'm not a go-to-the-doctor guy usually but for you and the people around you, i'd encourage you to find out.

not knowing where your family lives and who recently had contact with your child, unless you live in an area with known cases it would seem more unlikely that it has to do with covid-19. i would definitely speak with your child's pcp. not knowing your insurance situation, i would first rule out the flu with a flu test if the health provider suggests any tests.

regardless, even if it is the flu or a common cold, i would take the same precaution so that you don't get it because the flu and cold can cause complications such as pneumonia like covid-19.

Northern Ohio and as far as we know, he hasnt been exposed to any carriers which is why I'm treating this, for now, like a garden-variety cold and not something more serious.

But that's what sucks right now.  Your mind cant help play the "what if" game, especially when it concerns your children, even though intellectually you know both the risk of infection as well as the likelihood of a problem of magnitude are low.

i totally understand your feelings. my family recently came back from traveling one of the impacted regions. and while we have our child stay home for 14 days to observe, any cough or slight sniffle makes my hairs stand.

more the reason why the tests should be made available, both economically and physically, to anyone who wants to be tested.

Testing here in northern Ohio for mild symptoms isnt happening yet.  Ironically I was telling a co-worker about his symptoms and he said his 13 year old son had the exact same thing last week (he lives about 10 miles from me) and said much of their middle school had it.

So is it a cold? Probably.  Is it something more? Probably not.  But it would be nice to able to get a test like South Korea is currently using and find out.

You can wash your hands raw or just cut them off. This spreads by sharing air in close proximity to someone who has it. Still should wash your hands though. And you should trust me. I'm a koala on the internet.

I've been paying attention to all of the common points of touch at the office--door handles, the coffee pot, etc.

I'm carrying around some folding paper towels to avoid common touch points.  The paper towels are like toilet paper--there's a dirty side you don't want to touch.  (I have to admit, I've accidentally touched the dirty side a few times.  D'oh!)

Sorry trees, but you're going to have to take one for the team until this passes.

Also there are not going to be mass quarantines forcing people to stay in their homes. So stop coming to Costco to buy a years supply of paper products and bottled water.

Been to over 15 college basketball final fours and tournies--and 6 in Indy.  It is the most over-rated, dullest location by far.  A small town persons idea of a big town.  And if it isn't clear, it is in Indiana--the only state south of Mississippi.

It's a freakin' cold/flu virus. Nothing more. The overreaction to this is astounding. By April/May it will be off the front page and in the rear view mirror. (At least it should be, IMHO.)
