There actually might be a decent crowd tonight. It's Michigan vs. MSU on a Friday night and both teams need to win for a shot at the NCAA's.

It's tough to go up against the NCAA tournament. Many sports fans are trying to watch these basketball games, right now.

Though Michigan vs MSU will probably have a decent crowd.

One of the 800 reasons that this thing shouldn't be in a 20K seat neutral site, off-campus venue.

Hopefully the B1G changes their format after the contract is up with the two cavernous pro buildings. If they desire a single elimination tourney so much, fine. Play the whole thing at a rotating campus site like every other B1G sport does.

The setup tonight and tomorrow night is the same as the CCHA tournament and there wasn't an issue.  I would recommend either:

1. Neutral site location in an arena with max capacity of 10K to avoid embarrasing pics like the OP.

or

2. Rotate the semis/finals and divide the tickets among the final four teams.  Just go back to determining the final four teams a week earlier as opposed to whatever that was they had last night.  If the schools can't sell their portion by Wednesday 1PM, open it up to general public.

No beer sold at the joe, I'm staying home to watch it on my tv or at a bar. I lost count of how many CCHA championships that I attended, and consumed adult beverages even though I could have stayed home or gone to a bar to watch the game. Dammit, this hockey! And hockey demands beer at the Joe.

People keep mentioning the NCAA basketball tournament.  My counter-argument would be that this is the same weekend that they used to have the CCHA tournament at Joe Louis Arena.  When Michigan would play Michigan State at the CCHA tournament, you were pretty much guaranteed a 10,000+ crowd.

So it's not the NCAA basketball tournament first round (or second round, or whatever) keeping fans away.  It's something else.

It's B1G hockey, no one gives a shit about it. I would love to have the CCHA back and the majority of Minnesota and Wisconsin fans would rather play be in the WCHA. They actually played for something meaningful like the MacNaughton Cup and not some generic B1G trophy.

Money? When the realignment occurred, one of the few negatives I anticipated was the annihilation of existing, robust conference tournament traditions. Particularly the Final Five. So we knew this could be a negative. But I did not imagine it would be this bad. It seems that the compromise option to alternate locations between locii at St. Paul and Detroit (which I favored) has made the tournament less than the sum of its parts. People have gotten out of the annual habit of attending, and they can look at the prices and decide they won't miss it too much. This is not a college hockey fanbase problem. Michigan and Michigan State sold out a Friday game at the Joe merely weeks ago. And it's not specifically a basketball problem (though I'm sure many fans who saw the game from home appreciated having games to flip to) because MSU played early in the day and Michigan isn't participating at all. It's alienation of the customer base, I guess. I'd be interested to know your thoughts.

All at Joe Louis Arena, all the first weekend of the NCAA basketball tournament

1999 14,261
2000 13,177
2001 13,655
2002 14,079
2003 12,967
2004 11,651
2005 10,128
2006 10,478
2007 13,238
2008  9,471
2009 11,043
2010  9,831
2011 12,300
2012  7,823
2013 10,164

Attendance was clearly on a downtrend, but it wasn't trending to whatever we are getting now...

Having teams in close proximity was key. No one from Minnesota or Wisconsin will travel to Detroit for a conference hockey tournament. Notre Dame(plenty of ND fans in metro Detroit), Miami(passionate fan base) and all the Michigan schools was a different story. As a Michigan fan, I would never travel to the Xcel Center for the B1G tourney. I'm sure not many people from Columbus or State College are going to either.

WD, please stop trying to pattern your posts after Brian's word flows. He is a good writer, and you are not. If you feel the need to make 3 posts a day, just stick to facts and take the poorly phrased humor elsewhere.

I know it's your thing to piss, moan and whine about anything and everything I post, but Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh (insert failing thing here) is from the Santa Beebe twitter account that has been on fire lately after the Big 12 has taken a dump thus far in the NCAA Tournament.

Get your shit straight if you're going to piss and moan about my posts.

It has nothing to do with the ohh..., it has everything to do with you trying to get attention with every post. Why don't you spend more time getting good grades at whatever school you are at and then you can transfer to michigan, which im sure is a dream of yours.

It's an open thread for the B1G Hockey Tournament. You're just bitching to bitch because I'm the OP and you don't like me.

And my grades are fucking fantastic right now. I'm doing better than I ever did in HS. And I will never be transferring to Michigan, because I don't want to be swimming in debt for the rest of my life. I'm fine with just being a fan. My dream has always been to move to Ann Arbor and get Football season tickets.

Ia lot of people have this thought that a school like Michigan is out of reach because of cost, but the payoff long term outweighs the higher capital it costs to attend. Most of my family was smart enough to get some good scholarships, but I'll only get a little bit simply for being a minority, but I don't care, I'll pay off my debt with the far greater earning potential I'll receive. You do annoy me, but I still gotta say if you love Michigan go for it ! You won't regret it.

that Michigan alums are widely considered to be pompous ass-bags by the rest of the world. Have we graduated from - or are we still attending - a world class academic institution? Yes, absolutely. But that by no means makes it okay to crap all over someone who loves the university despite never attending. You should settle down before you hurt yourself and perhaps learn some humility. It will go a long way towards helping you when you get that high-powered, 6-7 figure job you seem to think you deserve simply for being alive.

wolverine devotee annoys me, but it has nothing to do with the fact he hasn't gone to the university. I'm not sure where you infered that, but to clarify, I appreciate all michigan fans, whether they attended or not. In addition I respect someone who loves the university but never attended more than an alumn who is not even aware of michigan athletics.

The inference comes from the snarky, "if you just try you can achieve it, big guy" tone of your post. Listen, like WD or don't, whatever, that's not my concern here. My concern is in the seemingly smug, I am better than you because I have a thing and you don't, 5th grade bravado that appeared to be on display. If I overreached then my apologies. Your post just seemed to contain everything I hate and nothing that I love about my alma mater.

OSU has no fans and I doubt Minnesota fans care enough to make the trip to the D. OTOH, both Michigan and MSU need to win tonight to keep their season from ending. I bet it'll be lively

Now Minn, Wisconsin and Penn St are all far. Before teams like Ferris, Western, Bowling Green all reasonable drive. Even ND and Miami not a terrible drive.

Be nice if the Gophers played like this tomorrow (assuming we win tonight).  Buckeyes are outplaying them, I'd say.  Naturally, because it's playoff hockey, they're not winning.
