B1G Hockey Tournament thread (LOL attendance)

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Look at this. Look at this debacle.

PSU sells out almost if not all of their games. You mean to tell me that PSU wouldn't sell out a home B1G Tournament series? How is the B1G making money on this?

Sure, Michigan will get people in the building later. Wouldn't you rather see them play a best of 3 series at Yost?

This is worse than last year's game against PSU in Saint Paul.

4 PSU vs. 5 OSU in this game, 3 Michigan vs. 6 Wisconsin at 8pm.

We all know campus sites would sell out (or at least come close). It isn't exactly a revelation. But the fact of the matter is this is what we've got. Wringing our hands at this thing isn't going to change the fact that it's a six-team conference that currently isn't very good playing an opening round game.

We're in a spot between the end of a physical season and the tournament that actually matters. I don't think extra games for a (in the scheme of things) low level prize is a good idea.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but with a season where M is actually in contention for a national title in mind, I think that would be a hindrance.

If M was one or two in the Pairwise going into the Big Ten Tournament I don't see how the extra games help and the autobid isn't a big prize.

It's different if they're fighting for a one seed or to get into the tournament, but I see a lot of downside and not a lot of upside to going from possibly two games to possibly six if you've proven you're elite in the regular season.

If you've proven yourself to be the top team in the country you would be playing a home series against a bottom half team before the championship series at home. You obviously wouldn't be able to improve if you are the best team in the country but you can't count on being the top team every season and not fighting for a top seed

The problem is that you have six teams and you want them all in a playoff. And, frankly, you want Minnesota in St. Paul and both UM and MSU in Detroit. So they regurgitated the "Super Six" concept and here you are. They'll probably draw 6-8000 for the nightcap with Michigan in it, and MSU's presence tomorrow guarantees a fair gate (but not necessarily half-full) tomorrow. Assuming you have a neutral site final, a best-of-3 format would not involve all teams. The play-ins would have such a series, while the top seeds would not. Even so it would be more fair to lower seeds, because they wouldn't have to win 3 games in 3 days in the final.

In the last 10 years of college hockey makes you think the NCAA/B1G care about attendance?  They obviously make money off of regionals in St Louis and Milwaukee, otherwise there would be no point in having them there.  All about sponsorships.

Wow. That is really sad. That is also why you don't schedule this tournament the same day as the opening weekend of the basketball tournament. I'm sure they will learn from this and schedule differently next year.

They can schedule it later on. Just don't schedule it while the basketball tournament is happening. Football's post season play is scheduled way after the regular season ends, so I'm sure they can figure it out for hockey. If they keep scheduling the tournament while the basketball tournament is in its first weekend, they will never get people in the seats for those games.

OSU's goal was amazing. All you heard was the goal horn echoing and a whistle at the end of it.

Never knew how loud that horn was until I just heard it in a 95% empty building.

This is a farce. I live in Saint Paul and went to the Mich-PSU game last year...and I thought that was empty. I was lucky enough to go to the old WCHA tournament that they always used to have at the X and they used to shut down 7th street (the adjacent street with all the bars) and have a block party for the tournament. Tickets were sold out months in advance and the rink would be packed the entire weekend. I also went to the NCHC tournament held at the Target Center last year and even with NoDak in it the Target center was still basically empty. As much as I honestly like the idea of a full B1G hockey conference on paper, this really sucks for the atmosphere of college hockey.

One major difference between the CCHA and WCHA versus the B1GTEN

BEER!!!

There is no beer sales at the Joe for this or any other tourney.  both CCHA and WCHA allowed it, if the arena already sold it.  BTW, the NCAA has the same restrictions on the sale of ETOH at their evens -- NOT HAPPENING.  NCAA hockey regional attendance looks like what i am seeing on TV right now, while drinking a BEER -- EMPTY.
