Nobody cared when Saban hired Butch Jones.  So much of our moral outrage (mine included) stems from what media covers or won't cover.  It's weird.

I mean, I don't like that this man is coaching kids again.  At the same time, I didn't read any of the report on the actual investigation the independent law firm performed on the Baylor program.  I read a few media reports, got mad, then probably came over to MGoBlog to re-read a Friday recruiting summary.

There were some similar reports--although much less documented than at Baylor--that Butch Jones at least tolerated (and perhaps encouraged) some Tennessee players to bully and threaten a teammate who was going to vouch for a woman reporting a gang rape by several Tennessee players.

I'm not sure of the frequency of those events at Tennessee vs. Baylor, but once the gang rape toleration count ticks above zero, they're all the same in my book.

Hard to read an oral report that was never transcribed. Baylor arranged it that way to protect themselves. They just made a short summary available.

The media covered Baylor because of criminal cases involving players Briles didn't discipline and/or covered up for, lawsuits against the school, the NCAA issuing a ten year show cause order, Briles, and the AD getting fired. The media didn't choose to cover that story. They had no choice.

Their press release emphasizes that Briles was never charged with a recruiting violation.

That's a relief. That would have made him a terrible choice to mentor their students. They offered no comments on what Briles actually did to get a ten year show cause order from the NCAA.

“… and if a few of our daughters get raped along the way to a State Championship, that’s the cost of victory.”

When do you do press releases for things you hope no one will notice or respond to— late Friday afternoon on a holiday weekend.

I had the unfortunate evening where I had to listen to Mr Briles give a keynote address at a coaching clinic. The other unfortunate thing was that it was hosted by one Jim Harbaugh and UM Football. He was a “good shit Jed” coach in 2016 before all that rapey stuff came out.

Wow...  I read about 30 of the tweets on the linked page, and one of them actually supported Briles and said he was screwed by Baylor.  Some people just live in Neverland.  I guess some people don't care about their daughters.

Speaking of daughters, I've seen a defense of Briles' saying that he has a wife and daughters, so of course he would have the best interests of women in mind (kind of like the racist who couldn't possibly be racist because he has a black friend).  Also, there's this gem on his Wikipedia page (and I've seen people use something similar as a defense of Briles as well)

"Briles is a staunch churchgoer and has put forward his faith as an influence on his coaching."

If there was going to be a high school that could, in one go, not only hire a reviled and disgraced coach but almost master the art of the news dump while practicing nonchalance about the PR implications of such a hire, it would be a high school in Texas.

When I was in law school, one of my (revered) professors wrote a song parody of "The Yellow Rose of Texas" that had the following:

A loyal son of Texas

One night went on a spree,

Committing seven murders,

Some rape and burglary;

The jury sentenced him to the electric chair, of course,

But the reason why they fried him was the bastard stole a horse.

Yeah, because I definitely want to put highly impressionable high school kids around a man who knowingly stood by and allowed his football players to rape young women.....

That’s a stain on this school that will never be washed away.

He should never have a job where people report to him and he has to make tough decisions. He’s proven he cannot make the ethical one. He should also never be able to have a job around young people.

There’s no such thing as “small” when it comes to Texas high school football. That’s an insane release (and process) regarding your next high school football coach, where the high school consists of a mere 450 students.

I always assumed he'd get another crack, but I figured it would be some mediocre college team.  A HS team taking a run with him, though, seems weird, especially in a city with under 3,000 residents.

I don't think he should be coaching football ever again in such a capacity, especially HS kids.  But long ago I gave up hope that people actually cared about holding people accountable beyond the absolute minimum required for your attention.

The worst mistake we make on this count is probably to assume that what Art Briles did is notably worse than what the average collegiate coach privately considers defensible.

The only reason hes not coaching FBS football right now is the negative PR shitstorm that would follow.

Art Briles might be one of the best offensive minds out there...and in a win at all cost world -  note that a near or maybe even outright majority on this forum is OK with cheating to win - that will trump ethical concerns.
