AP ranked teams that lost this week
Since the last AP rankings (Feb 22):
- #2 Baylor
- #4 Ohio State (x2)
- #5 Illinois
- #6 Alabama
- #7 Oklahoma (x2)
- #8 Villanova
- #9 Iowa
- #11 Florida State
- #13 Creighton
- #14 Texas
- #15 Virginia
- #16 Virginia Tech
- #17 Kansas
- #18 Texas Tech
- #19 USC (x2)
- #23 Wisconsin
- #24 Missouri
- #25 Tennessee
I love the parity in this sport - and that neither major teams from Michigan are on this list.

Where is that fourth #1 seed going to come from? A pool of two-time losers this week, or someone below them that lost once?
Decisions, decisions...
February 28th, 2021 at 7:32 PM ^
Wonder if the Ayo injury will help Illinois as far as getting that #1 seed, especially if they can be competitive against us. The committee would certainly have to factor his absence in and give them the benefit of the doubt.
February 28th, 2021 at 8:41 PM ^
The B1G tournament will be the last thing the selection committee will see, along with the other P5 tournaments. This will be an exciting Selection Sunday.
February 28th, 2021 at 7:55 PM ^
If Houston keeps playing well and cruises to their conference tourney title, they could slip into the fourth #1 seed. Kenpom has them #4 right now.
EDIT: Torvik has Houston #3 ahead of Baylor.
February 28th, 2021 at 8:01 PM ^
That would be interesting...
February 28th, 2021 at 8:19 PM ^
18 ranked teams lost, 3 top 10 and a total of 4 ranked teams lost twice....OSU thrice, poor Buckeyes.
February 28th, 2021 at 9:49 PM ^
Poor Buckeyes?
I hear they get paid pretty well.
Wait til they drop their final conference game to the Illini, going into the tourny dropping 4 straight.... that's such a beautiful thing!!!!!
February 28th, 2021 at 10:40 PM ^
Houston lost to Wichita State, Tulsa and ECU. Wichita State isn't a bad loss but Tulsa and ECU are two bad losses for Houston. That likely will prevent them from getting the #1 seed. I still think it'll be a 2nd B1G team which is probably Illinois.
Illinois seems the most likely, but they need to not get embarrassed by us AND probably at least make the B1G Final to be a 1 seed. In fact, if Iowa or OSU make the Final, that might be enough for the committee.
However, if Iowa or Illinois slips up (not counting an M win Tuesday), they might be a 2 or 3. OSU must win out and reach B1G Final.
If any combination of early B1G tourney losses by those 3 and Houston stays perfect the rest of the way... it's NOT likely but it is possible.
Houston is so weird. Those 3 losses seem inexplicable given how they simply destroy opponents in their wins.
They have great advanced stats but the two bad losses loomed large for Houston which is why I don't think they'll get the #1 seed. Figuring out the 4th #1 seed is a mess

Iowa, OSU and Illinois have better wins than Houston and play in the best league. One of them will be the 4th seed over Houston.
February 28th, 2021 at 7:17 PM ^
Incredible. This national championship truly could be ours for the taking.
February 28th, 2021 at 7:20 PM ^
Tomorrow’s AP rankings are gonna be real interesting. I know they don’t really matter, but still curious to see how far some of these teams fall. OSU lost 3 in a row, so they should fall significantly.
February 28th, 2021 at 8:02 PM ^
Yeah probably tumble to #6 or #7
February 28th, 2021 at 8:47 PM ^
Won’t most teams that lost only once just slide down a spot? Or, stay pat as a 2x loss team drops below them?
February 28th, 2021 at 7:22 PM ^
You can add Villanova to your list, thanks to LaVall Jordan's Butler team.
February 28th, 2021 at 7:25 PM ^
They are there, at #8.
February 28th, 2021 at 7:50 PM ^
Indeed they are, good job on the dig at MSU too.
February 28th, 2021 at 8:23 PM ^
Yes, the jab at MSU made me laugh. Can't be on a list of ranked teams that lost if you're not ranked. But, to be perfectly accurate, they are on some rankings. KenPom has them No. 62, a couple of spots below Wright State. NET has them No. 69. RPI has them at an even No. 100. See https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/rankings/index/. I like the last one. Round numbers are easy to remember.

Underrated.

It’s March (almost). Let the Madness commence
February 28th, 2021 at 7:28 PM ^
I see what you did there OP.
LOL.
February 28th, 2021 at 7:32 PM ^
How the hell did Alabama lose twice? Did they play non-conference games?
February 28th, 2021 at 7:45 PM ^
Edit: misread the scores - Bama only lost once, to Arkansas.
February 28th, 2021 at 8:00 PM ^
Oats gets paid and now this...
February 28th, 2021 at 8:43 PM ^
Alabama beat Miss St.
They only lost once.
February 28th, 2021 at 9:21 PM ^
Correct - my mistake.
February 28th, 2021 at 8:08 PM ^
Maybe Bediako will see where he really needs to go to win.
February 28th, 2021 at 8:12 PM ^
Bama lost twice and still won the conference in the same week
SEC basketball is terrible
February 28th, 2021 at 8:49 PM ^
Outside of Kentucky, they have been bad for years.
February 28th, 2021 at 9:07 PM ^
Couple years with Florida under Donovan
February 28th, 2021 at 7:34 PM ^
Gonzaga won't be on this list because they play in a joke conference. Michigan is playing as well as anyone in the country. Incredible discipline by the coaches and players to come out of the COVID pause not having missed a beat (save for the 1st half against Wisc). Real testament to Juwan and the senior leadership on this team.
February 28th, 2021 at 8:00 PM ^
Gonzaga won’t be on this list because they have completed their schedule unless they add a game this week, which might be wise since they would have two weeks off at least.
February 28th, 2021 at 8:13 PM ^
They have their fearsome conference tourney against all that talent though.
February 28th, 2021 at 8:13 PM ^
To be fair, they've already had the last two months off too
*ba dum tiss*
February 28th, 2021 at 7:41 PM ^
If you go Sunday to Sunday, OSU lost 3X.
Good for them!
February 28th, 2021 at 8:12 PM ^
I know all of these aren’t ranked but I enjoyed this past week or so. Living in Kentucky, I hate the Wildcats so I’m glad they lost. I also hate Duke, Ohio St and Mich St. It was a good week!
February 28th, 2021 at 8:52 PM ^
Parity, indeed, is alive and well.
USC is the only PAC 12 team in the top 25...and they lost twice-Wow!
MSU getting slapped back to reality is icing on the cake.
Here, it truly is great to be a Michigan fan.
February 28th, 2021 at 9:10 PM ^
PAC 12 has been weak for quite some time. They should be better than they are. Talent leaves the area quite a bit because of the one and done. I think Gonzaga should join the Pac12, they would do well there.
As far as parity, I enjoy parity in hoops. I know Matt hates it and says the talent is diluted but it’s what keeps it interesting to me. Anyone can win a title and have good teams every year. It’s not the same 4-5 teams every single year like I football. I’d hate to see Duke and UK for example play for the title every year.
February 28th, 2021 at 10:41 PM ^
Pac-12 won't accept Gonzaga because they don't have a football program plus Gonzaga is in a Jesuit/Catholic conference so I'm not sure if they're keen to leave the WCC.
February 28th, 2021 at 9:10 PM ^
Someone will know the last time an NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament was played without any of these teams in the field: Duke, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan State, Syracuse, Arizona, Georgetown, Marquette and Cincinnati.
February 28th, 2021 at 9:11 PM ^
Don’t know the answer but man I’d love it if it happened.
The casual fan who only pays attention to college basketball for the tournament is going to have a hard time keeping the NIT and NCAA brackets straight this year.
The 2021 NIT might be reduced from 32 teams to 16 teams this year, eliminating the automatic qualifiers that had been the regular-season conference champions in recent years. One report from February 16 indicated that all 16 teams would play in New York, but a report on February 25 about a quickly spreading New York City variant of COVID-19 might suggest some reason for changing those plans.
Duke and MSU will get in based on name. I don't like it, but it will happen.
They will absolutely get the benefit of the doubt, and probably more than they deserve, but I think it will come down to the conference tourneys for these guys. They've got to win at least one in their respective tournament.
February 28th, 2021 at 9:38 PM ^
It’s hard to win in college basketball. We could easily lose a couple of games before the next poll. Nothing is guaranteed.
All the more reason to enjoy when we win.
