AP ranked teams that lost this week

Since the last AP rankings (Feb 22):

  • #2 Baylor
  • #4 Ohio State (x2)
  • #5 Illinois
  • #6 Alabama
  • #7 Oklahoma (x2)
  • #8 Villanova
  • #9 Iowa
  • #11 Florida State
  • #13 Creighton
  • #14 Texas
  • #15 Virginia
  • #16 Virginia Tech
  • #17 Kansas
  • #18 Texas Tech
  • #19 USC (x2)
  • #23 Wisconsin
  • #24 Missouri
  • #25 Tennessee

I love the parity in this sport - and that neither major teams from Michigan are on this list.

Illinois seems the most likely, but they need to not get embarrassed by us AND probably at least make the B1G Final to be a 1 seed. In fact, if Iowa or OSU make the Final, that might be enough for the committee.

However, if Iowa or Illinois slips up (not counting an M win Tuesday), they might be a 2 or 3. OSU must win out and reach B1G Final.

If any combination of early B1G tourney losses by those 3 and Houston stays perfect the rest of the way... it's NOT likely but it is possible.

Houston is so weird. Those 3 losses seem inexplicable given how they simply destroy opponents in their wins.

Tomorrow’s AP rankings are gonna be real interesting. I know they don’t really matter, but still curious to see how far some of these teams fall. OSU lost 3 in a row, so they should fall significantly.

Yes, the jab at MSU made me laugh. Can't be on a list of ranked teams that lost if you're not ranked. But, to be perfectly accurate, they are on some rankings. KenPom has them No. 62, a couple of spots below Wright State. NET has them No. 69. RPI has them at an even No. 100. See https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/rankings/index/.  I like the last one. Round numbers are easy to remember.

Gonzaga won't be on this list because they play in a joke conference.  Michigan is playing as well as anyone in the country.  Incredible discipline by the coaches and players to come out of the COVID pause not having missed a beat (save for the 1st half against Wisc).  Real testament to Juwan and the senior leadership on this team.

I know all of these aren’t ranked but I enjoyed this past week or so. Living in Kentucky, I hate the Wildcats so I’m glad they lost. I also hate Duke, Ohio St and Mich St. It was a good week!

Parity, indeed, is alive and well.

USC is the only PAC 12 team in the top 25...and they lost twice-Wow!

MSU getting slapped back to reality is icing on the cake.

Here, it truly is great to be a Michigan fan.

PAC 12 has been weak for quite some time. They should be better than they are. Talent leaves the area quite a bit because of the one and done. I think Gonzaga should join the Pac12, they would do well there.

As far as parity, I enjoy parity in hoops. I know Matt hates it and says the talent is diluted but it’s what keeps it interesting to me. Anyone can win a title and have good teams every year. It’s not the same 4-5 teams every single year like I football. I’d hate to see Duke and UK for example play for the title every year.

Someone will know the last time an NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament was played without any of these teams in the field: Duke, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan State, Syracuse, Arizona, Georgetown, Marquette and Cincinnati.

The 2021 NIT might be reduced from 32 teams to 16 teams this year, eliminating the automatic qualifiers that had been the regular-season conference champions in recent years. One report from February 16 indicated that all 16 teams would play in New York, but a report on February 25 about a quickly spreading New York City variant of COVID-19 might suggest some reason for changing those plans.

It’s hard to win in college basketball. We could easily lose a couple of games before the next poll. Nothing is guaranteed.

All the more reason to enjoy when we win.
