Any chance Hackett becomes permanently AD?

Submitted by StoneRoses on
Sorry if this has been discussed already, but is it possible that Hackett remains as permanent AD? I wouldn't have any reservations if he could land a slam dunk hire (Harbaugh(s)). Happy Halloween - Discuss...

He's connected to the University in other areas and may have volunteered step in to lead the search.  I got the vibe from the press conference that managing athletics was not his gig.  (Opinion based on 5 minutes of TV time)

The AD search has been underway for some time (one would hope!) and candidates have to take the stance "let me know when the position is open" lest they alienate their current employer.  My guess is the AD that wants the job now has his agent talking to Hackett et. al.

Because they named him interim?

The answer is no, no, no, no, NO.

Athletics has changed more in the past 10-15 years just as many business have with the age of internet, social media, and a new culture/mindset among the nation's people.

Hiring a good guy and a good leader isn't everything anymore.

Just like you need more than that in a football coach.

No question in my mind this version Brady Hoke succeeds more than he has if he takes over for Moeller than this version of Brady Hoke succeeds now.

(And that's not me calling him a great leader, because after the Morris thing, I don't see that even a little bit).

Anyway, no, I've got a better shot than he does. He's a stablizer. An Associate AD at a non-football D1 school. Maybe I have a .000000000001% chance, and that's only because I've worked at two B1G schools, a Big East school with FCS football and an American Conference school with football.

Neither Hackett, nor myself should get our hopes up.

All I know about Hackett, is that he was CEO at Steelcase in Grand Rapids.  Steelcase is one of the largest employers in the Grand Rapids area, however, like other big manufacturers (Steelcase makes office furniture), Hackett allowed many good jobs to be shipped overseas, taking necessary jobs away from Americans.

simply because i cant find that fact, even steelcase's IRS filings never show a 70 mil loss..

id welcome the information.

(ED)

all I can find are references to squabbles pre 94 with union organizers, which sound like the usual reason to claim extraorbinant losses and run to korea

Mentioned in this article from today: http://www.michigandaily.com/sports/getting-know-michigan-interim-athle…

Full disclosure here, and I've mentioned it before, I work at Steelcase and my dad's worked there for 35+. There were years when I was young that business was booming so much that there was no reason to even think about going lean because we could barely keep up with demand. That changed, quickly, and some difficult decisions needed to be made. I'm not a PR person nor do I work in finance, so I'm not going to try to throw around specific numbers. All I know is that Hackett did what was necessary to keep the company alive, and now it's thriving again. I know from several times he talked to the company that he didn't take a single one of those decisions lightly. He didn't *want* to take away anyone's job.

I'm sure I come across as a bit worked up in this thread, but a) I think anyone that understands how businesses work would agree that Hackett did an incredible job and b) Steelcase as a company has been incredibly good to my family beyond just putting clothes on our back and food on our table, and Hackett and his predecessors' effort to building the culture there is a huge part of that.

and ppl in the office love him...

they probably had the same stock and didnt lose their jobs...

im just saying if youre going to quote a 70 mil loss, ya better have better than my SEC filing for 94(which was quoted as a loss of 70 mil on here, but is actually a 64 mil profit)..

just say "i like the guy,"

dont throw out BS numbers..

thats all I want.

thats why I asked for a reference..

Yep, I assumed the folks that wrote the article did some research. I took a look through the filing you posted and did find a net profit of (70) in a column listed as 94, but again, I'm not an accountant and don't have a good handle on balance sheets. Apologies if that was incorrect, but I'm not trying to throw out BS numbers. Business was very bad. It's much better now.

And yes, I like the guy.

Haha, stop by Steelcase any time you're in GR, I'll buy you lunch! :)

These debates are great (though maaaybe not suited for MGoBlog...) because while I try to be empathetic to other perspectives, and I work with the incredible folks in our manufacturing plants all the time, it's hard to put myself in that position.

i think its something that UM has always encouraged.

I'm just seeing in from the perspective of my uncle, who worked for a supplier for steelcase and his friends in a shop that was closed...

im taking you up on that offer though, next time i hit GR, we can argue about things that matter, like michigan football. lol

I'm just seeing it from the perspective of my uncle, who worked for a supplier for steelcase, actually in middle management, but still lost his job. and his friends in a shop that was closed...

(ED this was in response to a smart ass newbie with 1 mgo point.. who either deleted himself, or got run out of town....)

still lose jobs. I'm not a fan of sending jbos overseas, but the truth is that such measures are necessary to compete with jobs in countries like China.

And big businesses are ran by "fellow Americans".

If you don't like it start your own business. I'll never understand why those who complain about job losses don't simply start theri own business. Instead of beign community organizers or union activists perhaps you ought to go into business and run it like it you wish. Sell only shares to likeminded people.

No background in athletics administration, somewhat controversial reputation for how he handled Steelcase in the last few years...

But really, it seems this is an interim pick, nothing more, nothing less. There's no way this guy is permanent AD material.

and didnt have the middle class production job( that actually drives an economy) that got shipped overseas to make his own stock rise a quarter of a point?

I'm done with econ and politics..

either way, as long as we have a real AD by Dec. who cares who the interim is.

because Harbaugh or any real winner (Mullen) is not coming here to work for an interim..

and thats what matters

I know it was discussed above, but I seriously doubt thats the whole story. A lot of times companies have to make tough decisions to stay profitable. Do nothing and go under / be bought out? Or make some significant cuts to keep in business? It'd be great if everyone in America could make 6 figures, but unfortunately it doesn't work that way

It's the nature of economics/business unfortunately. A bunch of a companies competing with each other will keep seeing them try to lower costs, eventually one will go overseas and the others will essentially have to follow suit to stay competitive unless you can convince consumers to buy more expensive items because they are made in America. Some will, many won't

I checked out the comments on a report of Dave Brandon's resignation yesterday and a "Brando" Calrissian was making a name for himself on there. My first assumption was that it was you, but then I noticed the slight difference in the first name coupled with the fact that he was a bitch... The conclusion I came to was, "Can't be the same dude..."

If he is still here come the time a potential coaching search is underway ( if not already) and hires a top notch coach I say give him a chance. That's if he would want to be AD permanently.
