And the turnover buffs go to...
Well, I don't really follow the twitters or other social media but since it is supposed to go to the player with the most turnovers, looks like the winner is (or will be) none other than Rod Moore, who finished the season with 4 picks. Not sure how the fumbles work into it, but I've listed INT, FF, and FR (on defense) below.
- Rod Moore - 4 INT
- Will Johnson - 3 INT
- Michael Barrett - 2 INT
- DJ Turner - 1 INT, 1 Fumble Recovery
- Mazi Smith - 1 FF, 1 FR
- Makari Paige, RJ Moten, Mike Sainristil, Taylor Upshaw - 1 INT
- Mike Morris - 1 FF
- George Rooks - 1 FR

LOL remember when we were all worried about him starting in 2021? Fantastic, smart player. Hopefully a 4 year guy who will get his chance in the NFL.
January 4th, 2023 at 3:35 PM ^
He got one midwestern sports reporter's vote for Heisman.
January 4th, 2023 at 5:58 PM ^
If he keeps improving next year like he did this year, he's the best safety Ann Arbor has had since I can remember. And yeah, I know Peppers and Hill exist. But they played a more hybrid role between safety and LB. Moore is the prototypical deep safety that shuts down deep routes.

Rod has smarts and athleticism. He also has a frame that is going to carry more weight as he matures. I’m betting he has a nice NFL career. Dude plays good football.
January 4th, 2023 at 3:32 PM ^
Moore Rod is never a bad thing
January 4th, 2023 at 3:33 PM ^
Let’s have a collective buy thirty pairs.. and, hand ‘em out at the end of the season to every player who records a TO during the season.
January 4th, 2023 at 4:13 PM ^
That'll only cost about $100k.
January 4th, 2023 at 8:03 PM ^
Tru,
Let’s say 2 turnovers per game.. that’s about $6K / game. What’s a possession / turnover worth?
I know it won’t be funded by the Athletic Department - but, just from a “seat revenue, that’s about 12 cents per seat per game. Heck, I’d kick in twenty bucks just for fun…

Or maybe a Target gift card?

Will Johnson is gunna be a beast next season!
January 4th, 2023 at 5:11 PM ^
Gonna be a great team talent wise next year. Lots of freshman contributors on defense.

Cool story, bro (and notably non-threadworthy):
I met Mike Sainristil's parents on the stroll into State Farm Stadium. Sweet folks and he played a heck of a game, despite the outcome.

Cool story, bro - I met Moody's parents and lil sis in a food/cocktail line at State Farm Stadium. Also sweet folks with an awesome son!
January 4th, 2023 at 4:59 PM ^
Did his sis have the same steely gaze at the cocktails?

What does "Turnover Buffs" mean?
I'm happy for Moore, just confused by the term (which isnt surprising given I'm old and not up to date with the slang you beatnik hipsters use these days)
January 4th, 2023 at 3:39 PM ^
I have a feeling that, following this comment, someone is going to suggest you change your username to MGrewOld, past tense... :-D
January 4th, 2023 at 3:39 PM ^
I think it is the brand of sunglasses?
January 4th, 2023 at 3:41 PM ^
Buffs are sunglasses. It's similar to the "turnover chain."
January 4th, 2023 at 4:07 PM ^
I think there is a kids song about them
The turnover buffs go round and round, round and round, round and round
Hence the title of the tread.
January 4th, 2023 at 3:41 PM ^
Buffs are the glasses and its a Detroit thing - Will Johnson was the guy behind the idea
January 4th, 2023 at 3:41 PM ^
From one old guy to another, "Buffs" are a particular type of Cartier sunglasses. The term was coined here in Detroit. I think Will Johnson was instrumental in securing the glasses via an NIL deal.
January 4th, 2023 at 6:42 PM ^
The name is because they use Buffalo horn on the temples.
January 4th, 2023 at 3:42 PM ^
The "Buffs" are really expensive sunglasses, Cartier if I'm not mistaken, that the players put on and have their picture taken after each turnover.
January 4th, 2023 at 3:43 PM ^
"Buffs" are a nickname for a type of fancy and expensive Cartier glasses, which are popular and culturally relevant in Detroit. (I love that we're integrating some Detroit culture into the team!) Whenever a player gets a turnover, he goes onto the sidelines and wears a pair of these "Buffs" to celebrate. The Turnover Buffs!
January 4th, 2023 at 4:52 PM ^
Seems trivial, but it's insanely motivating. You'll see other programs copy it, especially MSU.
January 4th, 2023 at 3:44 PM ^
You missed this on the broadcasts?
Buffs are sunglasses made by Cartier, named because they're made with buffalo horn. They are quite expensive, >$1,000, and popular in Detroit.
The players have a NIL deal with a local jeweler who donated a pair to the team. Whenever a player gets a turnover, they get to wear them on the sideline; the player with the most turnovers at the end of the season gets to keep them.
January 4th, 2023 at 3:44 PM ^
They’re a style of Cartier sunglasses made popular in the Detroit rap scene. You know how some teams have a special turnover gimmick that a defensive player wears when they get a turnover? Miami had the big chain. I think there was a WWE belt once. Well, Michigan, having players from Detroit and being 30 minutes out of the city, has turnover Buffs.
January 4th, 2023 at 3:46 PM ^
The Turnover Buffs are a pair of (fairly expensive)* Cartier sunglasses. The temples are made of buffalo horn, thus "buffs". Will Johnson purchased (or received) a pair as part of an NIL endorsement. After a turnover, the player with the takeaway took a picture with the rest of the Michigan defense while wearing the Turnover Buffs. Johnson has promised the Turnover Buffs to the player with the most turnovers at the end of the season.
*I cannot identify the exact model worn by Michigan players, but Cartiers with buffalo horn temples start around $3,000 retail.
January 4th, 2023 at 3:46 PM ^
High end sunglasses from Cartier are a particularly Detroit fashion and status symbol. Buffs refers to the material of construction, buffalo horn, on some of the most expensive models. The Turnover Buffs are homage to the regional culture, and thus uniquely a Michigan thing.
January 4th, 2023 at 3:50 PM ^
i'm beginning to think "buffs" are Cartier sunglasses that are popular in Detroit. can anyone confirm?
January 4th, 2023 at 5:38 PM ^
Still researching... I'm sure I'll find it somewhere.
January 4th, 2023 at 4:00 PM ^
Thank you to everyone who responded and with only a smattering of good-natured mocking of my ignorance.
I learned something this afternoon, much obliged.
January 4th, 2023 at 4:20 PM ^
My favorite part was the sheer volume of posters (myself included) who fell over themselves to describe, explain, contextualize the Turnover Buffs; that's The Michigan Difference™.

First!
January 4th, 2023 at 4:31 PM ^
You weren't the only. I was oblivious to the actual meaning as well.
January 4th, 2023 at 4:47 PM ^
Dudes in Detroit were getting robbed for them, and shot if they didn't comply. Like Jordan's were in the 80's and 90's.
January 4th, 2023 at 4:57 PM ^
You need to watch the full games not just “Football in 60” between afternoon naps.
January 6th, 2023 at 9:33 PM ^
Do you watch the games?
January 4th, 2023 at 4:56 PM ^
The thing that's weird: if you watched any games with an interception, the announcers talk about the Turnover Buffs with regularity.... SUSPICIOUS
January 4th, 2023 at 3:37 PM ^
Kid is a playmaker. Well deserved.
Not really relevant but Hutch has three interceptions, and two fumble recoveries. He should get Buffs plus a Buddy’s pizza.
January 4th, 2023 at 3:38 PM ^
My favorite photo of him personally!
January 4th, 2023 at 3:43 PM ^
Amazing. And it looks like it was before the game rather than after.
