And the turnover buffs go to...

Well, I don't really follow the twitters or other social media but since it is supposed to go to the player with the most turnovers, looks like the winner is (or will be) none other than Rod Moore, who finished the season with 4 picks. Not sure how the fumbles work into it, but I've listed INT, FF, and FR (on defense) below.

  • Rod Moore - 4 INT
  • Will Johnson - 3 INT
  • Michael Barrett - 2 INT
  • DJ Turner - 1 INT, 1 Fumble Recovery
  • Mazi Smith - 1 FF, 1 FR
  • Makari Paige, RJ Moten, Mike Sainristil, Taylor Upshaw - 1 INT
  • Mike Morris - 1 FF
  • George Rooks - 1 FR

If he keeps improving next year like he did this year, he's the best safety Ann Arbor has had since I can remember.  And yeah, I know Peppers and Hill exist.  But they played a more hybrid role between safety and LB.  Moore is the prototypical deep safety that shuts down deep routes.

Let’s have a collective buy thirty pairs.. and, hand ‘em out at the end of the season to every player who records a TO during the season.

Tru,

Let’s say 2 turnovers per game..  that’s about $6K / game.  What’s a possession / turnover worth?

I know it won’t be funded by the Athletic Department - but, just from a “seat revenue, that’s about 12 cents per seat per game.   Heck, I’d kick in twenty bucks just for fun…

Cool story, bro (and notably non-threadworthy):

I met Mike Sainristil's parents on the stroll into State Farm Stadium. Sweet folks and he played a heck of a game, despite the outcome.

What does "Turnover Buffs" mean?

I'm happy for Moore, just confused by the term (which isnt surprising given I'm old and not up to date with the slang you beatnik hipsters use these days)

"Buffs" are a nickname for a type of fancy and expensive Cartier glasses, which are popular and culturally relevant in Detroit. (I love that we're integrating some Detroit culture into the team!) Whenever a player gets a turnover, he goes onto the sidelines and wears a pair of these "Buffs" to celebrate. The Turnover Buffs!

Here's a little more on Buffs and Detroit

You missed this on the broadcasts?

Buffs are sunglasses made by Cartier, named because they're made with buffalo horn. They are quite expensive, >$1,000, and popular in Detroit.

The players have a NIL deal with a local jeweler who donated a pair to the team. Whenever a player gets a turnover, they get to wear them on the sideline; the player with the most turnovers at the end of the season gets to keep them.

They’re a style of Cartier sunglasses made popular in the Detroit rap scene. You know how some teams have a special turnover gimmick that a defensive player wears when they get a turnover? Miami had the big chain. I think there was a WWE belt once. Well, Michigan, having players from Detroit and being 30 minutes out of the city, has turnover Buffs.

The Turnover Buffs are a pair of (fairly expensive)* Cartier sunglasses. The temples are made of buffalo horn, thus "buffs". Will Johnson purchased (or received) a pair as part of an NIL endorsement. After a turnover, the player with the takeaway took a picture with the rest of the Michigan defense while wearing the Turnover Buffs. Johnson has promised the Turnover Buffs to the player with the most turnovers at the end of the season.

*I cannot identify the exact model worn by Michigan players, but Cartiers with buffalo horn temples start around $3,000 retail.

High end sunglasses from Cartier are a particularly Detroit fashion and status symbol.  Buffs refers to the material of construction, buffalo horn, on some of the most expensive models.  The Turnover Buffs are homage to the regional culture, and thus uniquely a Michigan thing.

Kid is a playmaker. Well deserved.

Not really relevant but Hutch has three interceptions, and two fumble recoveries. He should get Buffs plus a Buddy’s pizza.
