All recruits being told to wait as "Silent Commits" until Signing Day

Submitted by Indonacious on

Per Steve Lorenz, it seems as though any future commits will be silent until NSD, when Harbaugh wants to make splash and have all of them reveal their commitment on that day! If true, another unique idea from harbaugh...maybe has something to do with the signing with the stars event?

Here's my take...

I think this is a genius way to not scare off recruits in the same position groups. No one can get scared of the competition if they don't know about it. Lol. Harbaugh's friggin awesome.

Silent commitments are great at this point. Though it is nice to have a good amount of known commits talking up Michigan during camps and all star games. Free advertising.

its going to work with recruiting sites. They're the ones who will take the hit I guess as well as Twitter. I do believe the coaches will allow players to talk to each other about who is silently commiting and who is still up in the air about it. I just don't know if or what the recruiting sites will be able to do about it. Although I really hope it hurts the Shitcago tribune, that writer should be taken out and flogged and I am sure the recruiting sites would agree especially if their hands are tied in getting this stopped.

A few will be immune from the possible ramifications, however, they comprise just a handful of programs.

It will have a larger effect on lesser programs who will not be certain they are pursuing a player that might well be committed.  This could cost them many wasted man hours if pursuit of a player who may very well not be on the market but, of course, this policy does not allow them to have knowledge of who is and who isn't available.

I do believe our coach, possibly acting upon the advice of marketing professionals with ties to Michigan, may very well have taken another step to allow him yet another recruiting advantage, an area where he seems to have a natural gift to do the right thing, always somewhat unconvential, at the absoltuely correct time.

This past month has provided him with exposure on the national scale that might be unprecented. I am uncertain whether he is the mastermind behind an action of this type, but I know he will be the beneficiary. Brilliant strategy.

I don't think it would work in today's world but the theory would essentially return recruiting to when there were more scholarships. The key is that its the theory of it because it wouldn't work (leaks via everything) and schools can still only take 25ish a year. The point is that it would force non-power schools to spend their limited budgets and time on kids they have no idea about. Mid-major schools would be in a battle to the death on NSD and it would likely lead to an early signing period. Schools like Purdue would get their natural 5 3* Purdue kids and then.....? They'd go into NSD with the potential to only have a few scholarship kids so they'd start to recruit worse players for more security. It would recreate the atmosphere of the Big2 Little10 era across the country.....in theory. It just wouldn't work, IMO. Kids talk and coaches aren't dumb and people find out.

one of the  benefits of this policy at this point of the recruting cycle is to get young men to come in who are not concerned about competition.  At the same time, seems likely this will only be the policy for the final weeks of the recruiting season going forward, or maybe this particular recruting season close.  May just be trying this policy out  as another innovation for this part of the cycle, or even for this particular recruting season based on current situation simply  because he feels that will help him close out the class in the best possible way for this team.   Either way, sure we will be hearing more about this in the days and weeks ahead.

if they go this way. sorry they are going this way. when they tell or do not tell other schools that is kool.  if they tell other schools it will leak out. they want to mess with jim. so keep looking and you will find some leaks. sure does put the other schools on a hate list. no one has done this before. jim is a man of tricks .

I can't imagine Harbaugh would set up a signing of the stars event if there was risk that Gary would not be in the class.  If that were to happen, the reaction from the world would be overwhelmingly negative.  To me, this means Gary is either a silent commit, or Harbaugh is close to 100% sure he is coming.

This is awesome news!
