Albuquerque Journal Prep Sports Editor Thinks Gentry will Commit this Weekend but Announce Monday

Submitted by alum96 on

For those of you in the Detroit metro area, James Yodice sounds a lot like a Mick McCabe type for the Albuquerque Journal; been in that role since 1985.

There are a series of tweets from last night but for some reason I can only embed one in an OP so will post the others below.

I think Gentry will commit by Saturday night, and keep it to himself (and Harbaugh) until Zach can tell Strong in person. As it should be.

If you want to read up on some scouting on Gentry, I did a diary compiling various views of him here.

Strong is going to pitch to Zach that he would be the only quarterback (unlike Michigan) that UT takes for this class. (Yeah, now that his attempts to pull in another QB are not looking so positive). This would be a massive loss for UT - a program that desperately needs a quarterback NOW. I'd be very surprised if Zach commits this weekend. Michigan better hope so because Charlie Strong is going to do everything he can Monday to persuade Zach to stay. This should get very interesting.

Harbaugh bringing in 'his' qb ASAP is a positive. Hoke made it 4 years without having 'his' qb play.

Looks like this kid puts a little jam on his toast, so to speak. I trust Harbaugh's eye even on deep sleepers, but its always fun to get guys that the services love, too. He does look impressive, and not at all like ryan mallett.

Are the chances less than 100% that he would have recruited Gardner to play QB? I can't imagine he wouldn't have turned away a 5* in his own backyard. There wasn't really anything about Gardner that didn't fit what he was looking for. He liked Gardner enough that he passed on taking any QBs in the 2012 class.

Hoke simply didn't take the QB position seriously enough. He moved Gardner to WR because he thought Bellomy was capable of filling in if Denard went out. At the time he said that if Denard was going to miss extended time that Gardner would step in, not Bellomy. Yet he had Gardner learning to play WR, when it became painfully clear he had plenty to work on as a QB.

All of this was going on while he failed to address the lack of depth at the position. Hoke has some other shortcomings as a coach, but his mishandling of the QBs is the biggest reason I see for him failing here.

In the sense that the guy already "there" feels like the coach really wants to go in a different direction, and so decides to cut out for greener pastures. In that sense it doesn't really matter if the other prospect actually ends up there.

I don't think Gentry's decision is predicted on Murray committing to Texas. The analyst's for Texas are saying Gentry feels slighted by their flirting with Murray. That's enough for Gentry to jump ship and commit to the good guys. He's waiting for Monday out of respect for Coach Strong and the opportunity to speak to him face to face. That's the word on burnt orange anyway.
