Good article and seems reasonable. I too really feel this is Jim's last chance with Michigan. Hypothetically speaking, let's say he passes on UM. Looking at the best case situation that could come of it if he did pass:

  • UM gets a plan B coach and turns up to be a good hire, maybe not a homerun but a good hire.
  • UM hires perm AD (Hackett or someone else)
  • UM plan B coach stays ~8-10 years and leaves for various reasons and the school is in Wisconsin status (good , decent, but not great)
  • Harbaugh at this time may have gone through at least 2 more NFL coaching jobs and by that point may or may not have had a SB win. Most likely getting burned out
  • UM starts new coaching search
  • Jim would be pressing 60 years of age (same age range as Les Miles is now)
  • MSM would be saying it's plausible he would be sought after but unlikely due to his age
  • There will be younger, on par coaches by this point, who would have proven themselves to be a good fit for Michigan
  • Jim passing on UM's last offer would have soured some (if not many) important people at UM. There will be a very clear pro-Harbaugh camp and an anti-Harbaugh camp. Similar to what we hear in regards to Les Miles.

Over all, I think Jim is aware this could be very much be his fate IF he decides no on Michigian. I think he wants to go back to Michigan, I absolutely have no doubt on that,  but I think he was hoping for it later in his coaching life (like 5 -7 years from now) to give him more time to get at least one SB championship. He also knows if he passes on it, it's going to set off a number of people that could make or break his return to Michigan in the future. Many will see it as bridge burning, even with the best of intentions on Jim's part. That's going to be his bigger struggle here to decide. IMHO....It's easier to go back to the NFL than college in regards to age. Age seems to be more of an issue in college than for the NFL. I think once he processes that, his heart will be in the right place.

Greg Schiano is probably available-or is he headed to Oakland?

Fire that Harbaugh fella.....he needs to be coaching some midwestern college kids somewhere.

What's the name of that little town?  Ann's Garden or something?

(a little slightly scarcastic LOL)

Actually think it's more likely we land him if he left the NFL on a high note. Doesn't seem like he's wired to want to go out like this. So I dont think this type of loss helps us.

That said, I wanted them to win out...keep Harbaugh happy, but a devistating loss and a quality win next week would be the same feeling. He could say he was proud of this team and their resolve, blah-blah-blah.

He could then head straight to the airport and be in Ann Arbor, a touch happier because his team finished with a W.

Losing a bunch of games may fuel that "I need to prove myself in the NFL" fire...and we don't want that. We don't want him thinking he's got to go to another NFL team and prove his value.

We should also be rooting for a big SF win next week.

...or it could lower his perceived value to NFL owners thereby lowering potential offers. I would like to think that businessmen with billions of networth wouldn't make a what-have-you-done lately, emotional decision like that but it has proven to be all too common.

...about Harbaugh's coaching performance last night. You can only do so much, there is such a thing as player error, no matter how good the coach is. The coach can't get out there and play the game for them.

That fumble wasn't a "coached" fumble, was it?
