3:30 Zach Charbonnet and UCLA vs. Hawaii

Crazy Stat: Chip Kelly has never won a non-conference game while at UCLA.

I expect Zach to have a big day.  Prediction 150 yards total yards.

Or, bear with us, it is a football game, and football games are fun to watch--and this one has a former player who was given a raw deal last year but left on good terms.

Oh, and he has 106 yards and 3tds in the first half, so that's pretty exciting. Maybe that means we will have more production out of our three guys with Hart as RB coach calling the rotation.

No.. it isn't. Being mildly interested in what a former player is doing at a new school while also enjoying a college football game is not like stalking your ex on social media.

I think most fans wish Zach the best, and there is nothing wrong with casually tuning in to see how he's doing.

Frankly, I think it is unhealthy to think that's unhealthy.

Haven’t found updated CoVid attendance  policy in my very short research. But I saw as of August 4th both UCLA and USC were allowing full capacity. Oh, and with a marquee opponent coming to town (LSU), UCLA is currently giving away tickets.

“USC draws well.” Define “well.”

“The Trojans averaged 59,358 fans for home games in 2019, a slight increase from 55,449 in 2018 but well below the 72,588 the team averaged in 2017.”

USC ranks seventh in the PAC12 in filled stadium capacity percentage, seeing 85.5% of the LA Memorial Coliseum filled on average over the last 5 years*

* last 5 years where attendance was allowed, so 2015-2019

The average high on August 28 is 92; it's 97, per the NWS, modestly but not excessively more. Feels worse outdoors under the sun.

"Most of the fall" incorporates the bulk of the season after the school year starts up in late September. It is absolutely hot there at this time of year.

It might not explain the attendance on its own, but with a casual fanbase, etc, it certainly helps complete the explanation.

I should have said before Labor Day instead of early fall.  I lived in LA for five years.  Pasedena is pretty nice, but sitting in direct sun with 100,000 during the hottest hours of the day (anywhere) is miserable.  I got [heat blisters/2nd degree burns]at the ?1990 Maryland game in the big house.

I also went to the 2000 game. Over 100 people were sent to the hospital with heat exhaustion.
I was in Arcadia, near Pasadena, today. I spent an hour outdoors in the shade. It was miserable. I can’t imagine willingly spending 4 hours sitting in the sun when the game is televised. I saw a guy looking completely comfortable wearing blue jeans. I guess you get used to it if you live there.

Not a crazy stat at all, Chip Kelly liked to use the non-conference season to “workshop” his playbook and prove how smart he is.

I’m interested to see if UCLA finally looks functional.

Ugh. Beth Mowens, what we in the industry call a “puker” bc she over emphasizes her syllables when she talks. Nobody talks like her in real life, but stick a microphone in front of them and they proceed to puke alL over it.

Zach Charbonnet transfered from a mediocre program coached by a man who garnered tons of hype 10 or so years ago with QBs that can't hit open receivers and an RB rotation where he couldn't get first-choiced carries, to a mediocre program coached by a man who garnered tons of hype 10 or so years ago with a QB that can't hit open receivers and an RB rotation where he can't get first-choice carries.

I'll be fair about this: Michigan really tried to keep him engaged. But Hassan Haskins wasn't getting touches because he was a prospect or a coaches favorite. He got touches because he produced.

To be honest I consider Haskins to be the flip side of AJ Dillon, the lower-rated guy we missed on in favor of higher-rated guys who didn't perform or didn't come at all who just kept producing on the field. Haskins is the lower-rated guy that got a chance and earned what he got, performing on the field.

Would have been nice if Charbonnet stayed, and I do think that my snark has some merit, but... he wasn't the best back on our roster. And wouldn't be this year.

Hawaii or not, he still showed excellent feet, that lower body strength to break tackles, and acceleration.

Haskins has a better burst as a North-South runner, but has rarely shown the East-West ability Zach does. Haskins has inconsistent vision, but I hope he’s able to be the kind of Derrick Henry type bulldozer he has flashed.

It’s hard to say Zach lost anything in the games when he was never given solid carries last year despite showing more play among ability as a true freshman.

To say Haskins is better than ZC when Haskins after two seasons still hasn’t had enough carries to be over 1000 career yards is team bias. ZC had 750 yards and 11 TDs as a freshman with an injured knee.

The only reason to say Haskins is better is that he’s in UM and we need him to be. Personally, I’d be less surprised to see Donovan Edwards overtake the bulk of carries by mid October despite Haskins doing well if he is as special as advertised.
