Most coaches still haven't figured out the percentages, and it doesn't make sense.  It's not about making the brave call vs the scared call.  You're statistically more likely to end up better off by going for it in that situation.  When you're aware of probabilities, the brave call is actually to kick it away because you're trusting the kick won't get blocked or the snap fumbled, the kick won't get returned for big yards, and the opposing offense won't get the field position back... and on top of all of that that you'll be able to win without whatever points you might have gotten by converting the 4th and short.

But coaches don't think about that stuff.  They do things the way things have always been done.

Other than OSU, who had looked elite this year so far? Auburn is getting crushed, Alabama has no QB, MSU took advantage of an underwhelming Oregon team. I can honestly say I have no idea who the best team is yet. Even OSU didn't look great against VT until they caved in the QB's collarbone. Thoughts?

I'm not sure OSU has looked elite this year.  We think they'll turn out that way based on past experience, and they probably will.  But they've only looked elite for a few moments late vs VT and their second string QB, 4th Q vs a crap Hawaii team, and not at all today.

Alabama looks better than anyone I've seen so far, and even they have a glaring weak spot with their QB situation.

We picked a lousy year to not have a passing game.  We are one good QB away from being able to beat almost anyone in spite of our own shortcomings.  There aren't any perfect-looking teams out there this year, at least not yet.
