2022 Athlete Dillon Tatum to Michigan State

Submitted by YakAttack on September 30th, 2021 at 4:24 AM

West Bloomfield athlete Dillon Tatum has committed to MSU per 24/7 sports. Once thought to be a Michigan lean/lock due to our recent ties to WB, he drug out his commitment for months, which is never a good sign.

It's not a surprise at this point, but if I were a kid, I would have a really hard time not following my head coach (Ron Bellamy) to Michigan.

don't be surprised if more WB kids end up elsewhere and not at Michigan... there is concern over at WB right now amongst the teaching staff that without Ron there anymore a lot of these kids are going to struggle with grades... Ron taught 3 classes at WB which all of the football players took and the the classes were more or less there so that the players could catch up on their school work and keep their grades up. the new coach at WB is a retired teacher and is only there to coach...

in no way am i saying this is what happened with Tatum but its not going to be a lock to get every kid out of WB just because Ron is coaching here now...

i do know that there were a lot of WB football players that put in transfer requests to go to other districts right after RB took the job at Michigan, so WB promoted the current coach to head coach to keep those kids around... but i think you're right because WB is not dominating this year at all and got rolled in their first game...

My youngest son plays for Lake Orion Freshman team, while his team is very good so far (undefeated this year and 36-1 since 7th grade - they split his age group into 2 teams for 7th and 8th grade and they went 31-1 those two years)

They rolled WB last week.  It was 36-6 (scoring on every offensive drive - sounds familiar?) only 2 minutes into the 2nd half before was started massively substituting.

Yes, WB will see a decline in their football program.  The funniest part is in the post game hand shake, their QB (who actually was pretty good passer) was trash talking "Wait til we get to Varsity..."

Basically he was salty that Clink didn't recruit him to Kentucky, loved that Sparty treated him like the jewel of their class, and grew up rooting for Sparty. I do not think he is a huge loss (outside of our S recruiting being bad) but I hate seeing MSU grab guys like him and Mangham.

That's not the point.

The point is they went to MSU. Which gives some folks Rich Rod flashbacks when Dantonio built a team off the same types of players.

We were still recruiting well. It was Florida, not Kody Jones out of Tennessee. But the enemy was getting a guy as good or nearly as good with a chip. And then when a player we wanted came along (whether he ultimately panned out or not)...that player would go to MSU because half of Detroit was there.

It's a line you have to balance. No reason to be concerned, but you need some of these guys or you need them to go to Kentucky or Bama or somewhere other than MSU.

If Mangham was at WVU and Tatum at Tennessee...no one would give a shit.

Why? I don’t get, “at this point…” Everybody on here was predicting a bad year & how the staff was not good, but now after beating three horrible teams at home you are suggesting it would be hard to not go to Michigan? Every year it’s like this. Take it a week at a time & stop the Milton for Heisman after one week stuff again.

Curious why there was always a lot of buzz about Dillon and hardly any about Michael Williams. More or less the same ranking on 247. How's his recruiting going?

Why would an intelligent young man follow another man anywhere when his heart is somewhere else?  Not only does this show character, it also emphasizes the fact that one can ultimately care for someone and still be true to themselves, at the same time.  Congrats young man in everything you do, except when you line up across from the Maize and Blue.

MSU fans are going full little brother over this on Twitter while I don’t think any Michigan fans have lost sleep over him. Especially funny that MSU fans are under the impression we hired Bellamy specifically to get Tatum? Very clear this was a Jamari Buddin situation where he could’ve committed to us, but we moved onto other targets because the timelines didn’t match up and was an MSU fan growing up. Heart vs Brain. Hopefully we can pull in Domani Jackson and Damani Dent

You couldn’t be more wrong. “Very clear…” um, no.

Michigan wanted Tatum bad. They didn’t move on to others by choice.

I can tell everyone from covering the Great Lakes area, that kids are way more impressed with Mel Tucker & MSU than they are with Michigan right now. They see what Tucker is doing with a mediocre roster and are very impressed.

As for the region, check out the various visitor lists for rack program (Michigan. MSU, ND, OSU, PSU) and a couple teams are loaded with 5 Star & top 100 4 Stars visiting.

To hell with Notre Dame, and all Irish fans get the hell off this site!  Michigan gave him a chance to commit, but when Mo Linguist left he slowed things down and seemed like he needed to be coddled and told everything would be alright.  Michigan moved on to others like Damani Dent and Amorion Walker.  They didn't lose him to Sparty.  Sparty won by lack of competition.

" kids are way more impressed with Mel Tucker & MSU than they are with Michigan right now. They see what Tucker is doing with a mediocre roster and are very impressed."  Mel Tucker has a better than mediocre roster with the 14-15 kids he signed from the Transfer Portal, some of which were 4 & 5 star recruits.  When you have JUCO academic standards, you can improve your roster easier through the Transfer Portal than when you have Ivey League academic standards.

What kind of sources are you referencing? The guys at 247 were told Michigan essentially stopped recruiting him. Bellamy wanted him in the fold but Clink was uninterested. They would have taken him because of his relationship with Bellamy but Clink did not recruit him to Kentucky nor Michigan. If you watched his tape and thought he was a good fit then you can criticize clink for not prioritizing him as a recruit. This was not, however a situation where MSU was a more attractive place than UM. This was about Clinks lack of interest. He made a commitment video for UM before Clink was hired. So enough of this fan fiction unless you have some facts to back it up.

As an aside, Tatum has been trending towards MSU well before Tucker and MSU showed any signs of improvement this season (pretty much since Clink got hired), so your narrative that he saw how well MSU and Tucker are doing with a mediocre roster and jumped at the opportunity lacks foundation as well. Wake me up when MSU beats out Michigan for a recruit that they are heavily prioritizing because this example ain't it.
