2021 red shirt status

So who ended up burning red shirts?

Obviously, every other player on the team is a red-shirt based on the free year the NCAA granted because of covid, so this year is the only year we actually need to track it

JJ

Edwards

A Anthony

Moore

Junior C

are those the only 5?  Who else burned their red-shirt this year -

That would take tremendous foresight to not only know a Rimington Finalist was going to enter the transfer portal, but that he would commit to Michigan. I’d like the Powerball numbers please.

Jokes aside, hindsight is 20/20. Michigan was preparing Crippen to start next season. Oluwatimi’s entrance into the portal and commitment to Michigan changed those plans, but it was too late to preserve the redshirt at that point.

I also think coaches kinda have a good gauge on the talent level of these kids and know who is going to be around for a potential 5th year. What’s the use in redshirting a guy who is going pro after 3 or 4 years? If he’s good enough to see the field as a freshman, let him see the field.

Not that Ojabo was ready as a freshman, but does it make anyone feel better that he’s going to the NFL as a redshirt sophomore instead of a true junior?

In reality, with the new transfer rules and the Portal, the significance of redshirting has really diminished in the last couple of years. Just don't see as many high talented kids sticking around and waiting their turn like they used to. If they're not playing by year 3, they're probably gone

I disagree on this.  Firstly, there are always going to be a lot of players who are in the rotation or even starting by year 3 who are not slam dunk pro prospects.  Unless you’re getting predominantly top-100 recruits, it’s not crazy to have a bunch of 4th and 5th year players at the top of the depth chart.

Secondly, there will be fewer early transfers in the upcoming years.  Right now we have a confluence of several things:

1) A transfer portal that is new.

2) A ton of kids with an extra year of eligibility from Covid, which reduces the amount of available playing time for younger players.  As those players cycle out, there will be fewer rising third-year players blocked by 5th year players that still have a 6th year left.

3) Covid itself, which a) has created a general sense of unrest for most everyone in society, and perhaps more relevantly, b) artificially dampened coaching changes last year, which made this year have a ton of coaching changes (over 50% more changes than last year).  Coach movement always creates player movement.

The portal will remain, but I’d be very surprised if it was used as much by incoming classes as it has been this year.

I don't think I agree with this.  I think that the transfer portal usage is going to stay high and possibly go higher. It might be different types of players transferring; Caleb Williams selling himself to the highest bidder, top G5 players looking to get paid, top 150 kids who didnt play much/at all their first year looking to cash in on their name again before their recruiting ranking is forgotten.  To accommodate these, there is also going to be a lot of churn on the back end of rosters along with the standard kids just looking for a chance to play.  We are very, very close to free agency in college football.  I am all in for the kids making money, I just wish UM would relax the transfer rules to allow us to benefit from our NIL potential like other schools have.

Hot take: the whole concept of redshirting is dumb. Why not just let every player get 5 years? It used to make sense when coaches would just decide at the beginning of the season to redshirt a guy, so he'd spend more time focusing on classes (I guess?) But now what difference does it make? They are still suiting guys up and getting them ready to play every game.

Here's what I put in my database today, and what their effective eligibility will be in 2022:

  • QB: Dan Villari (Fr/Jr)
  • RB: Tavierre Dunlap (Fr/So)
  • WR: Ronnie Bell (Jr/5th), Cristian Dixon (Fr/So)
  • TE: Louis Hansen (Fr/So). (Hibner played 8 games)
  • OL: Raheem Anderson (Fr/So), Jeff Persi (Fr/Jr), Gio El-Hadi (Fr/So), Tristan Bounds (Fr/So). Crippen played 6 games so they've put some separation now between him and Anderson.
  • DT: Ike Iwunnah (Fr/So), Rayshaun Benny (Fr/So), George Rooks (Fr/So), Dom Giudice (Fr/So)
  • OLB: TJ Guy (Fr/So), Kechaun Bennett (Fr/So)
  • LB: Jaydon Hood (Fr/So), Tyler McLaurin (Fr/So)
  • S: None. (Paige and Morant played 9 and 8 games respectively)
  • CB: Andre Seldon (Fr/Jr), Ja'Den McBurrows (Fr/So), Eamonn Dennis (Fr/Jr)
  • Sp: Tommy Domon (Fr/So)
