2010 Heisman Watch - Updated

FYI - a quick review of the current stats show Denard atop the leaderboard in rushing yards and also in the Top 10-15 for passer rating. And if they combined his rushing and passing TDs, he would be in the Top 5 for total scoring as well.
[EDIT: Its pretty amazing how a seemingly minor reply about not liking the nickname "Shoelaces" can quickly get out of hand. You'd think I had just insulted Denard's mother or something. Yes, its an original nickname. No, I don't like it. But who cares?! Its just my stupid opinion about a nickname! FWIW - I think Denard's a beast and I can't wait to watch him play on Saturdays. He's quickly becoming one of my all-time favorite Wolverines and, coming from a guy that's lived and breathed Michigan football since birth, that's a pretty big thing.]
[EDIT 2: It's pretty sad that I'm sitting here at my desk worrying that people now think I do not like Denard and am not "all in for Michigan" just because I don't like his nickname. I better call a therapist!]

At what point will reporters stop explaining the nickname?
Or was the coach simply instilling a sense of urgency in the young man called "Shoelace"? (Robinson never ties his shoes.)

I wish we had enough "power" to start a new nickname (like "D-Rob" or something) to replace "Shoelaces" - that could be one of the worst nicknames on record. It was probably funny back in middle school but it seems kind of embarassing for a college kid. Any way D-Rob or something else could stick or is it too late??
September 20th, 2010 at 10:47 AM ^
DRob isn't original. It hasn't been original since JLo.
September 20th, 2010 at 10:50 AM ^
Does it have to be original to be good? IMO no, but I'm old-fashioned like that.
September 20th, 2010 at 11:03 AM ^
Why throw him in with everyone else who deems it cool to shorten their name like that, when he already has a name that is his and only his?
September 20th, 2010 at 11:08 AM ^
IMO no, but I'm old-fashioned like that.
If you're old-fashioned then how is Denard "Shoelace" Robinson not good in your epinion? I don't recall who pointed it out, but this is a fantastic nickname because it has such an old-school jazz/blues vibe to it, like Karl "The Mailman" Malone or some of the nicknames listed here.

Its all subjective and I'm just not a fan of the nickname Shoelaces. It sounds kind of childish to me, but WTF do I know?
September 20th, 2010 at 11:23 AM ^
His nickname is "shoelace" not "shoelaces"... if you're not going to like it, at least get it right.
September 20th, 2010 at 11:25 AM ^
It is Shoelace. Not Shoelaces.
EDIT: In other news, I am slow on the keyboard.
September 20th, 2010 at 11:31 AM ^
I may be wrong, but Denard specifically said "Shoelaces" in his interview with Erin Andrews for College Gameday. I tried to quote him precisely, since I figured he knows his own nickname.
September 20th, 2010 at 12:24 PM ^
A guy behind me at the UConn game was calling him "Laces" and telling everyone else that his nickname was Laces, acting as if he 1) knew what he was talking about and 2) had some type of ground-breaking information that Denard had a nickname. I wanted to turn around and punch him in the face
September 20th, 2010 at 12:16 PM ^
Mostly because if you do it to my name you get PBlo. Sounds dirty, no?
September 20th, 2010 at 1:56 PM ^
The value of a nickname is its originality and origin. Any time someone gets stuck with a nickname because of an action they have taken (usually during childhood) makes it way cooler than a play on their given name. i.e. 'Oil Can' Boyd > Tiger Woods > King James > A-Rod
September 20th, 2010 at 11:34 AM ^
It's better than "Beanie..."
September 20th, 2010 at 1:13 PM ^
As I recall, Schilling just called him "Shoe" in one of the videos.
September 20th, 2010 at 1:50 PM ^
I'm having a hard time understanding how you can simultaneously think that "Shoelace" is unoriginal and that "D-Rob" is original. You lost me.
September 20th, 2010 at 10:47 AM ^
We're 1/4th of the way through the season and we haven't played a conference game yet. I'm not holding my breath at this point.

My friends and I have always referred to him as "Nard Dog," which was recently adopted by Tony Reali on PTI.
September 20th, 2010 at 11:10 AM ^
I like it. Andrew Bernard from The Office refers to himself as the "Nard Dog" and its good. Sign me up.

I went to Cornell... ever heard of it?

I thought Mallett would have made a bigger jump given his great performance against Georgia.

double post

This isn't really the update... merely one of the voters recapping the weekend performance of the top 5 from the previous week. The new poll/rankings will be out sometime tomorrow.

...sir. Also, this was previously discussed here. If you're interested in the topic, you can see what others had to say about it.

Who cares what his name is...The guy is a beast. If our D steps up the big ten had better watch out.
September 20th, 2010 at 11:40 AM ^
Amazing that two of the four have played for M and a third almost came our way. Something to be said about the Michigan tradition of recruiting and developing fantastic QB's!

"Shoeless" Joe Jackson
Has withstood the test of time, albeit with a little help from the greatest movie ever and one of our greatest alums. Just a very aprospos quote for all of us:
"This field, this game, is a part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that once was good, and it could be again. Ohhhhhhhh, people will come, Ray. People will most definitely come."

You are the only person who has seen that picture.
