2 more coaches -- when and who?
Some may not agree, but it's pretty clear the two remaining spots on the staff are reserved for defensive coaches, probably DL and DB.
DL because both Hoke and Mattison likely recognize the importance of a dedicated DL coach, and DB because, well, yeah. Two DB coaches is also a possibility.
So why no hires, especially at DB? Possible reasons:
[1] Mattison is too busy recruiting, and doesn't have time to focus on hiring coaches. He'll do it after signing day. Rushing it now won't help recruiting and if we've learned anything in the past three years, it's that chemistry among defensive coaches and coordinator matters.
[2] They have someone in mind, but he's still working... The best-known candidate in this category, Mike Trgovac (Packers' DL coach and Bo-schooled Michigan man), is not possible, since it would be a step backward for a guy thought to have a shot at the Denver Broncos' DC position. Joe Whitt, Jr. (Packers' cornerbacks) was coaching at Louisville (cornerbacks and recruiting coordinator) through the 2007 season, so maybe, if he's interested in returning to the college ranks and Woodson and Trgovac recommend. I don't see any possibilities on the Steelers, and the Jets guys are highly unlikely. As for the Bears -- Jon Hoke (defensive backs) is, yes, Brady Hoke's older brother. Surely there's been a thread on this?
Anyhow, what is the CW?

Jon Hoke might be a good coach, but he shouldn't be our DB's coach.
A) He doesn't like to recruit.
B) We're already getting a bad rap for going inside to hire all the time, we don't need to add nepotism to that meme.

Not meaning to chide you but is this common knowledge that he doesn't like to recruit? Seriously, I don't know and I'm asking.
January 24th, 2011 at 6:25 PM ^
I'll look for the link but in the meantime (if you'll take my word for it) he's said explicitly that he doesn't like that part of the college game.
January 24th, 2011 at 6:27 PM ^
I'll believe you and agree that it would be a bad idea for anyone who doesn't like recruiting to fill the position. Thanks.

i like your avatar. what's it from?
January 24th, 2011 at 11:05 PM ^
Thanks. I stole it from another MGoBlog user so I can't tell you the real story behind it. My best guess is that it's a piece of program art from the 20's-30's, but again, that's just my best guess.

How nasty would Charles Woodson be as are DB coach?
January 24th, 2011 at 6:24 PM ^
Unfourtunately for us, he's going to be nastier in the Super Bowl.
January 24th, 2011 at 10:14 PM ^
Indeed, taller task in the super bowl than he had this past week. Roethlisberger is infinitely greater than the Hanie/Collins/Cutler mix he saw Sunday.
January 26th, 2011 at 2:11 AM ^
Collinhaniedammit?
I don't know what the hell was wrong with the Bears offense. Even with a fair amount of drives with a healthy Cutler, they couldn't do anything.
January 24th, 2011 at 10:06 PM ^
I think he would be nastier as "our" DB coach

i just hope we get a good coach whoever it is, but i hope that it happens soon. this is hurting us in recruiting, but i do realize that there is no reason to rush it for one class, whoever it is needs to be a good college coach and fit in. this may even be the guy that Mattison wants to groom to be our future DC. GO BLUE!
January 24th, 2011 at 10:52 PM ^
I am not sure how this is hurting us with recruiting. We are filling this class up at an insane pace. Hoke and Mattison have been machines as to defensive recruiting. We are loading up on LB and DE - we have so many young DBs already and have added more. We are NOT suffering w/r/t D recruiting.
January 26th, 2011 at 4:36 AM ^
The only way this is hurting us with recruiting would be that we don't have enough staff to help our present staff who are traversing the country... but wait even with the few staff we have we are still tearing up the recruting trail, so nothing (not even a lack of staff) will slow us from dropkicking this recruiting class.
January 24th, 2011 at 6:27 PM ^
They have not hired a Db coach yet so you really think its GM recruiting, or is he saving a spot for old number 2? Im just dreaming...
January 24th, 2011 at 6:32 PM ^
They ask him after the game "Charles, you just won the superbowl mvp.......where you going now?" Charles says, "I'm goin' to Ann Arbor!"
January 24th, 2011 at 6:29 PM ^
I don't know what's holding up the DL coaching, but I imagine that there might be some negotiations/finalizing details going on with Corwin Brown now that the Pats are out of the playoffs.

Found this interesting if i could post a thread i would , but two kids Michigan highly recruited last year Kenny Stills , and Tony Jefferson got into a little trouble over the weekend.

already has been posted so glad you cant

hoepfully Corwin Brown at DB.
Jon Hoke said in an interview that he doesn't want to leave Chicago, so it's unlikely to be him. Mattison and Hoke are both DL specialists, so it'll be interesting to see what they do.
January 24th, 2011 at 6:38 PM ^
Isn't he still unemployed? He would be a great addition to the staff. I know that it's a step back from what he was doing at Florida, but it would be a good way from him to get back in the game and also could put him as a potential successor for Mattison down the road. I know that he's in the mix for a couple of other openings, but if we could get him back in A2, it would be a great get.

I think Texas hired Austin.
January 24th, 2011 at 6:49 PM ^
Austin to Austin was a hot rumor for a while, but they went ahead and got Manny Diaz from Mississippi St and hired Jerry Gray to coach the DBs.
January 24th, 2011 at 6:38 PM ^
I still want Loeffler though
January 24th, 2011 at 6:40 PM ^
i'm with you but i don't think that is going to happen my friend, if it was going to i think it would have already.
January 24th, 2011 at 6:49 PM ^
Yeah, you are right, oh well, Loeffler would've been awesome but some defensive assistents are probably more important at this point.
January 24th, 2011 at 6:38 PM ^
if it is Corwin Brown i think that would be a good hire, but if it is there is no reason for it to take much longer.
January 24th, 2011 at 6:42 PM ^
There is probably a better than average shot at them waiting to name at least one coach after signing day since they have elevated Singletary as a temporary coach to use him on in home visits.
January 24th, 2011 at 6:46 PM ^
What did Singletary play at UM? He may be ready for promotion to a position coach, especially since Hecklinski is coordinating recruiting.
Still I would like Corwin Brown if he is interested.
January 24th, 2011 at 8:17 PM ^
Linebacker, I believe.
January 24th, 2011 at 6:49 PM ^
Trgovac as the d-line coach would be absolutley awsome. offer half a mill !
January 24th, 2011 at 7:00 PM ^
Then, we could have hours of Board posts saying "Ditka vs The Buckeyes, who you Got?", "I'll take Ditka by 21 points". Then the pragmatists among us, will of course chime in with "he's just one guy!", then the smart ass's among us, will of course reply with "you're right, Ditka by 14 points".
January 24th, 2011 at 7:03 PM ^
Would be fine by me.
January 24th, 2011 at 8:44 PM ^
Correct me if I'm wrong. I believe I read somewhere that each team is only allowed 9 coaches (paid). We already have 8. So that would mean either Hoke or Mattison would have to coach either the DL or DB. As for Hoke's brother he said that he wants to stay in the NFL. My vote would be for Woodson. Packers win the Super Bowl and Woodson retires to coach at his Alma Mater and one day take over as DC.
January 25th, 2011 at 7:56 AM ^
So stands to reason they'll have ten this year. Maybe the thing you read meant the head coach can hire nine assistant coaches.
