'Twas the Night Before Signing Day - A Poem
Not a creature was productive, chasing info like dogs.
The users mashed F5 on their computers with care,
In hopes that some five stars soon would be there.
Writers of diaries were nestled snug in their bed;
While visions of swim lanes danced in their head.
And Brian in his 'kerchief, and Ace in his tee,
Had just settled themselves for a long NSD,
When out on the Twitter there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my desk to see what was the matter.
Away to the browser I flew like a flash,
Closed down all my work tabs and opened crootin' ones quite fast.
Would it be new Ballz, giving us hope that stars would show?
Or merely a hype video, and let the the negbang then flow?
But nay! It was better, to my hopeful eyes did appear,
A flurry of stars for the signing, some we held quite dear.
With an excited star coach, shirtless in a gym,
I knew in a moment he must be Coach Jim.
More enthusiasm than known to mankind did he claim,
As he chased after recruits, and called them by game:
"Now, blockers! now, pass rush! now safeties and corners!
On, runners! on, receivers! on, tight ends and Quarters!
To the top of the conference! to the top of it all!
Now to the classroom and weight room! Go get ready for the fall!"
As commits did come in steadily, fast on the fly,
The fans knew the year would be great, and they cheered to the sky;
So up to the Big House the commits they flew
With a star filled two-deep, and Coach Harbaugh too—
And then, in a twinkling, I heard it online
The cheering and screaming of every Wolverine.
As I thought of my real job, and was turning around,
To the SotS Coach Harbaugh came with a bound.
He was dressed all in khaki, maize, and blue,
And he looked quite satisfied, making sure our commits had stayed true;
A bundle of LOIs he had gotten from the fax,
And he couldn't have been happier as he reviewed the stacks.
His eyes—how they twinkled! his dimples, how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And we cheered as he introduced all the new players to the show.
A cold glass of whole milk, he kept close at hand;
And he cheered and sang along to the sound of the band.
Coach Jim had a proud face and a renowned dad body
And quickly did the signing turn to a grand celebration and party!
The coaches couldn't be happier, the day could not have better,
And everyone shouted in joy at each incoming letter.
Coach Jim gave a wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
I knew as long as I wasn't a ref I had nothing to dread;
He finished his intros and went straight to his work,
And coached up every player, throwing balls with a jerk,
And laying his hand atop his Bo hat,
And giving a yell, chests of QBs he did bat;
He sprang to the sideline, to his team gave a whistle,
And to the Victors they'd charge, overburdened with hustle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight—
"Go Blue to you all, and to all a good night!"

Whoever reads this has way too much fucking time on thier hands. Never mind penning it. A poem? More like a discertation. Good gravy

I read it, and I liked it. Agreed, whoever can sit down and pen a poem this long, they definitely have too much time on their hands.

I wasn't pissing my jorts laughing or anything, but it was an entertaining read.

I knew I'd down vote it upon seeing the title. I did not even bother reading the OP.
February 2nd, 2016 at 3:25 PM ^
what exactly is a "discertation"?
If you're going to flame someone, spell correctly, or YOU end up looking like the idiot.
Jus sayin...

Spelling matters when publishing. Not so much on a blog using a mobile device to type. Meaning derived is more important unless one is trying to compensatefor feelings of intellectual inadequacy.

My initial post was in response to the OP's original post. Which looked like a farrago of endless letters. My bad for being unclear in my light hearted muse.

He's right, the original version was a spacing trainwreck. Stupid HTML formatting...

or COWBELL.......................

Something that long at least needs some spaces to aid in the flow of whatever strained ryhmes he's come up with.
Not to be pissy.
Go Blue!

It looks much more manageable with spaces. But still...

Came here to neg you. But it's not half bad.

My brain started hurting as I read through the page, the words coming at me like a freaking maize rage. If only some paragraphs to space out the words, my eyes would be focused instead of all blurred.
Great poem by the way!

Can we please stop doing these?
February 2nd, 2016 at 3:41 PM ^
There is no reason other than you wanted everyone to see your poem (that few people probably actually read) that you wouldn't post this in one of the other TWO Signing Day Eve threads. Both of which are still on the front page.

I mean, it's not "There once was a man from Nantucket..." or anything, but you have to admire the effort.
So +1 for that.

I think that I shall never hear
A poem as lovely as a beer:
The frothy base, the foamy cap,
The stuff that Joe's Bar has on tap.
Poems are made by fools, I fear,
But only Schlitz can make a beer.
February 2nd, 2016 at 5:01 PM ^
I was with you stride for stride until Schlitz. (shudder)
February 2nd, 2016 at 4:19 PM ^
This was actually very good.
Well done.

Not that you should quit your day job, but pretty entertainng. I once found myself with too much time on my hands and penned:
"You pledge your allegiance to Michigan State, known mostly to all as Moo U We can't comprehend how you go thru your life, not knowing the pleasures of Blue..." ... and on it went, got some laughs over cocktails, and bugged the person I intended it to for a while because he couldn't think of a retort fast enough.
Keep it up, recruiting week is way too serious
