'87 Rose Bowl pics

Submitted by WolverineHistorian on

My dad and my uncle went to the 87 Rose Bowl when we faced Arizona State.  (Out of all the WTF losses we had in the Rose Bowl, this one has to rank in the top 3.  But it sent John Cooper to Ohio State so I guess it was a blessing in disguise.)

Anyway, my dad found these old photos the other day in the bottom of his dresser drawer from his trip and he gave them to me, so I thought I would post them.

Man, great pics.  I remeber this like it was yesterday.

I was a junior and had 22 family members at the game (being originally from California).  We got up 8-0 right away when ASU failed to cover "the water bucket."   One of the assistant S&C guys said to me, "hey, YOU might even get a chance to play."  I believe he jinxed us.

I was in the stands.  I sat in the Michigan section endzone and was on the last seat before they went ASU.  Last line of defense so to speak.  I remember several things about that game:

1. My oldest son was born on December 13th and my wife said "you are NOT going to that game and leaving me alone.  I was living in San Fransisco at the time.  I went anyways.

2. We partied like it was 1999 the night before and i rolled into my seats on almost zero sleep.

3. We were up 15-0 and then the roof fell in.  I think  Bo called something like 73 sprint draws to Morris that game.

4. Near the end of the game I nearly got into a fight with an ASU fan who had pom-pom's.  God..they ALL had pom pom's.  They were shaking it in my face and by the end of the game i was tired, pissed-off and not in the mood for a pom pom in my face.  I said to some guy that if he did it one more time I'd take the pom pom and turn him into a human popcicle.  End of pom pom problem.

5. Last and the most amazing of all.  After the game i thought John Cooper was a brilliant head coach.

I was a junior too. I still feel like this was one of Bo's best teams. We were absolutely rolling with JH and the boys until Mr. Fogey came to town on a gray, rainy day late in the season.

My memory from that New Year's day was that ASU's D-Line just dominated. Also, this chant from our fans:

"A-S-U...A-S-Who? A-S-Holes!"

I was looking for myself in the photos - my last year in the band and going out with a Rose Bowl was fantastic.  Of course, it would have been a whole lot sweeter to win it, but the memories are still pretty darn good.  Thanks for posting these.  (I'm pretty sure this was the year I got to chat with John Davidson before the game, which was hilarious to my college-age self, though since he seemed dated and has-beenish to me then, I doubt anyone knows who he is today, so I'll just let it go.)

Actually, I have the entire game on video.  I emailed Chris Stapleton's cousin his fake punt with the phantom holding call this past Summer.

But you're asking alot of me to look at shots of the postgame where Bo was screwed out of winning his final game and USC, once again, benefits from a blown call by the refs.

Thanks WH - lots of memories, though the show itself wasn't anything amazing, lots of work went into its execution!  I'll be spending the rest of the weekend putting the names back to all those faces.

I never really enjoyed those sideline entries, though - they were really killer!  (Probably the time I had to give up the most respect to the trumpets and others first out of the tunnel, I admit.  Though I'd have given them a lot more if trumpets weighed 35 pounds...)

Made the trip as a junior in HS with the family.  Pele as the Grand Marshall of the parade, pep rally at the hotel (with Bo Derek "the other Bo" making an appearance as I recall).

Great experience with the exception of the scoreboard.
