TomVH: Weekly Update: Decision Dates, Visits, and Who's Left

Submitted by TomVH on

We're in the middle of a recruiting dead period, and about a month away from signing day. I thought I would give an update on who's left on the board, time frames for when specific recruits will make their decisions, and who will be visiting in the near future.

Who's Left?

2011 Michigan Commits
Name Position State Rivals Ranking
Demetrius Hart RB FL 4 Star
Justice Hayes RB  MI 4 Star
Brennen Beyer DE MI 4 Star
Blake Countess CB MD 4 Star
Dallas Crawford CB FL 3 Star
Jake Fisher OL MI 3 Star
Delonte Hollowell CB MI 3 Star
Kellen Jones LB TX 3 Star
Chris Rock DE/DT OH 3 Star
Greg Brown DB OH 3 Star
Jack Miller OL OH 3 Star
Desmond Morgan LB MI 3 Star
Tony Posada OL FL 3 Star
Matt Goudis K CA 2 Star

That's 14 current commitments, and for argument sake we'll just assume that Michigan will take 20 in this class. Rich Rodriguez has recently said they will take anywhere from 18-20 commits, so we'll go with 20. Here's a look at the most likely recruits left at each position, up to this point. There could be some new names pop up, but this list seems pretty solid for now.

Wide Receiver
Name State Decision Date Rivals Ranking
Kris Frost NC Army All American Game (Jan 8th) 4 Star
Hakeem Flowers SC Either January or Signing Day. May still take visits. 3 Star
Devin Lucien CA Signing Day. Visiting Michigan January 7th 4 Star
Prince Holloway FL January 15th. Recently said he will commit to Michigan on his January 15th visit. 3 Star

Frost is in this category because he will most likely get his chance to try wide receiver before potentially moving to linebacker. The situation for Michigan here is that they may just lead for all four of these receivers.

Defensive Backs
Name State Decision Date Rivals Ranking
Wayne Lyons (S) FL Army All American Game 4 Star
Raymon Taylor (ATH) MI  Visiting January 7th. Decision after that. 4 Star
Sheldon Royster (S) NJ Visiting January 7th. 4 Star
James Richardson (CB) TX Deciding in January 3 Star
Roderick Ryles (S) FL Planning a visit, decision date unsure. 3 Star

Again Michigan is in great position for most of these recruits.

Tight End
Name State Decision Date Rivals Ranking
Jack Tabb NJ January 3 Star
Frank Clark OH Visiting January 7th, decision date unsure. 3 Star
Tanner McEvoy NJ Visiting January 7th, decision date unsure. 3 Star

Tabb is thinking over his decision, and will be announcing sometime in early or mid January. The coaching situation had been factoring into his decision, and he was also hoping for an offer from Miami. He's not getting the Miami offer, so it will be between Michigan, North Carolina, and Arkansas.

Offensive Line
Name State Decision Date Rivals Ranking
Chris Bryant IL January, or Signing Day 4 Star

Bryant isn't sure if he wants to wait until signing day to make his decision, or just get it over with. He is waiting to see what happens with the coaches, but Michigan is likely to land Chris.

Defensive Line
Name State Decision Date Rivals Ranking
Anthony Zettel (DE) MI Likely to decide in January. 4 Star
Darian Cooper (DT MD Visiting January 7th, likely to decide signing day. 4 Star
Max Issaka (DE)  NJ May visit Michigan 3 Star
Deion Barnes (DE)  PA Visiting January 7th, decision in mid-late January or signing day 4 Star

As you can see, there are a lot of recruits left for only roughly 6 spots left. The good news is that there is a lot of quality left on the board. The recruits that are left and still have Michigan in the race are ranked highly, and more importantly could help Michigan in key areas.

Visits

The next visit weekend will be January 7th, and will be host to a good amount of prospects. Here's the list so far, and as usual will be updated as we get closer. These visits aren't set in stone, so they could change from now until the 7th.

  • S Sheldon Royster - Michigan is in Royster's top four with North Carolina, Rutgers, and South Carolina
  • DE Deion Barnes - Michigan is in Barne's top group with Penn State, South Carolina, and Georgia.
  • WR Devin Lucien - Michigan is in a very favorable spot for Lucien. This visit could determine where he ends up.
  • DT Darian Cooper - Cooper still lists Michigan in his top group, but definitely has concerns about the coaching situation. He should have some answers by this time.
  • ATH Raymon Taylor - Recently offered by Michigan, and recently decommitted from Indiana I suspect that Michigan leads.
  • TE Tanner McEvoy
  • TE/LB Frank Clark - The Glenville prospect always speaks highly of Michigan, and is excited about the visit.

I remember a few weeks ago that the whole gang from Dr. Phillips were suppose to come up for a visit but had a playoff game. Any rescheduling going on there or is it going to be a lost cause for the rest of them. I'm not going to get greedy becasue Dee might be the lamichael james we need ( fingers crossed) . But if i honesty would ask for some snake oil, I would like to see RR work with Dee and get HAHA in maize in blue. Saban not getting a 5 star really wouldn't be the end of the world for bama and I really don't want to see ha'sean on the other side of the ball in 2012. I might be out of the loop but is ha'sean dead set on bama still or is there still a chance for the 2 for 1 deal that was being thrown around earlier this year?

God, I love being a Michigan fan sometimes.  Scratch that.  I love being a Michigan fan period.

Zettel is the only one I have seen in person.  If he doesn't go Blue, I surely hope he chooses some team we'll never play. He would be a great addition. He played 5 positions when I saw him and was by far the best on the field at each.

Some of these players may want to make a decision soon, or there may not be a seat left for them when the music stops!  It's a great sign for our program.

All on one page, organized, pithy comments-- It looks very promising.

And the Jan 7 visit group is nicely balanced.  Hope they all get along and see the positives of playing together.  And that there's glistening snow under sunny skies so that Lucien can see the beauty of the campus in winter.  (Looks like the others have all seen snow before.)

Great work as always.

At one point, I heard someone say that Raymon Taylor could play FS because of his physicality.  Can anyone confirm this?  He'd pretty small for a safety, but if he's fast, has good ball skills and knows how to hit, those can make up for size in college.  In the event we don't get Lyons or Royster, Taylor at FS would be much more valuable than another CB.

the five star Recruits (especially on D)?  I remember when we were known for Championship level defenses....and we did have higher rated recruiting classes that fit this image.

Where are they?  Why are we only getting the 3/4 stars?  Is it because of our record the last 2 years?  Did LC hurt a recruiting pipeline???  what happened....

Please tell me what year you're referring to.  Very rarely did we have more than one 5 star defensive recruit, and many years we had none.  If we get the guys we're in on (Frost, Zettel, Lyons or Royster, Barnes or Cooper) that would give us six 4-star recruits on defense, plus highly sought after 3-stars such as Crawford, Kellen Jones and Delonte Hollowell.  Based on his performance of late, don't be surprised if Frost gets a fifth star, he's very close already.

Look through the Lloyd classes on Rivals and tell me which class was so much better than this.  I bet you'll find one or two, but this is on par with Michigan recruiting pre-RR.

EDIT:  OK I did some homework for you.  I looked through Lloyd's last six classes, 2002-2007, the only ones on Rivals.  I looked at how many 4 star defensive recruits we had each year, and what 5 stars, if any, we had.  Here is what I came up with:

2002 - two 4 stars, one 5 star (Gabe Watson)

2003 - five 4 stars, two 5 stars (Woodley and Burgess)

2004 - five 4 stars, no 5 stars.

2005 - four 4 stars, no 5 stars

2006 - five 4 stars, one 5 star (Brandon Graham)

2007 - three 4 stars, one 5 star (Donovan Warren)

That's four 4 stars per year, and less than one 5 star per year.  2003 was a very good year for recruiting defensively, but this year looks to be better than 2002, 2004, 2005, and 2007.

Posting this because I'm genuinely curious. How are you guys going to field a DL in the next two years if you don't load up on bodies? Just looking at the depth chart, I just don't see a lot of guys (much less quality guys):

DEFENSIVE END
Ryan Van Bergen JR(R)
Jibreel Black FR
Steve Watson JR(R)
NOSE TACKLE
68 Mike Martin JR
99 Adam Patterson SR
73 Will Campbell SO
DEFENSIVE END / TACKLE
92 Greg Banks SR
95 Renaldo Segesse SR
96 Terry Talbott FR
LINEBACKER / DEFENSIVE END
88 Craig Roh SO
58 Brandon Herron JR(R)
42 J.B. Fitzgerald JR

RVB is serviceable, Watson is meh, God help you if Martin goes pro, Talbott was a no-show as a freshmen. Jibreel Black showed some real potential this year. Roh is Roh - who knows if he's allowed to actually play DL. So I count 5 bodies at 3 down positions (not counting Roh - maybe 6). That's just barely a 2 deep in the 3-3-5 for down lineman. So my question for Tom is this: are you seeing much urgency in recruiting DL? I follow Michigan recruiting as a casual observer, but it doesn't seem like there is a lot of focus on DL (and, by my numbers - which could be wrong - there is a serious lack of depth). If you guys don't get more than, say, Zettel this year then you're in serious depth trouble for the next year (when you lose Martin, RVB, and Watson). So am I wrong in saying that DL is not just a position of need, but a position of absolute dire need?

Quinten Washington - DT, Richard Ash - DT, Kenny Wilkins - DE/DT, Jordan Paskorz - DE.

QW is a RS frosh and the other three redshirted this year.  Roh will be a DE the next two years, I would absolutely count him there.  Plus this recruiting class already has Brennen Beyer (4 star DE who will need a redshirt) and Chris Rock (3 star DE/DT who will as well) for the future.

I agree with you that DL, specifically DT, is thin, but not as thin as you suggest.

RVB is serviceable.

Stat lines for two Big 10 DE's (one is RVB, obviously):

  • 30 total tackles, 8.5 TFL, 4.0 sacks, 1 PBU, 4 QB hurries
  • 42 total tackles, 9.5 TFL, 2.5 sacks, 1 INT, 1 QB hurry, 1 fumble recovery

The first guy is "serviceable" Ryan Van Bergen, the second guy is "ZOMG! Awesome!" Cameron Heyward.

Conclusion: Having a famous father who played in the NFL and playing on a good team defense sure goes a loooong way towards how a player is perceived.

If you're saying that Zettel and Cooper (the primary defensive line prospects) are the most important players left on the board, I'd be inclined to agree with you. The exception being Royster.

Assuming either Zettel or Barnes (but not both), the difference between a good defensive class and a great one will come down to Cooper and Royster on signing day.

For me, the priorities would be the following:

  • DE: Zettel/Barnes
  • DT: Cooper
  • OL: Bryant
  • FS: Royster
  • WR: Lucien

I really like Lucien, but mainly I just think they need another wide receiver -- any of the others would be fine. I'd like to see another guy would could play linebacker if need be, so Frost or Clark seem good for the 6th remaining spot after that. After watching Brady shred the NFL with tight ends downfield, maybe Clark is a good idea.

You have to start with Royster and Cooper since they are the only recruits at FS and DT.

After that, you can't pass up Bryant (1 more OL required), Frost and Zettel.

Last spot Lyons, Tabb or WR.
