amazing what can happen when players actually catch the ball

I think it's funny that on a UM Football blog

like 800 people have somehow had a similar ulnar nerve injury.  that's freekish!

what cracks me up is the

what cracks me up is the caption: "he reads the corner".  it doesn't look like he reads anything.  just drops back and heaves the ball.

Not sure if Brian is trying

Not sure if Brian is trying to be sarcastic or what, but the info about Denard's "collapse" is accurate.  the fact is, the "great" RichRod offense, proved to blow against every decent defense in the Big 10.  Spin this stuff however you want, but after offensive explosions against turd defenses like IU, UMass, etc, we got eaten alive by MSU, Penn State, Iowa and tOSU.  That's a fact.  Late rallies and Forcier magic after games were out of hand just added meaningless stats.  Denard doesn't scramble, so i don't understand why there are 100's of posts about how Borges ruined him.  Denard isn't accurate when his feet aren't set.  Thus rolling him out where the field is cut in half isn't a great option.  He is what he is.  A fast runner with a decent arm who creates mismatches because defenses worry about his running.  In fact, he actullay looked pretty damn good in the pocket on that last drive.  One bad throw.

if folks can't see a dramatic improvement on defense, they are blind.  last year we gave up about 40 points a game to freakin IU, UMass and a PSU team led by Pat McGroin.  We absolutely sucked on the defensive side of the ball every year under RR.  it was embarrassing.

i could live with the timeout

i could live with the timeout before the punt to make sure we were ready for a fake.  if they faked and got the first, game over.  i would have liked to see them spike after roundtree's catch so that there was at least the possibility or threat of a run.  denard doesn't scramble, so that's sort of a nonissue, but we could have either run, called play action or designed role out if we had a timeout left.  having said that, we had a chance to win the game on 3 of the 4 plays that were run.

great response.  i'm tired of all the whining and second guessing.

The Defense was supposed to carry us in 2008

We had something like 8 returning starters on defense in 2008.  there's no way it should have performed as bad as it did.

7NA is taking over college football

During our bye week, i went to the ND v USC game with some buddies.  Notre Dame seemed like it had 7NA playing on a continuos loop.

when did players stop wearing those goofy white neck rolls?

Wouldn't Kovacs look more menacing with one?

'91 vs Today

I think the plays were similar.  If we miss in '91, ND can drive and win.  Last week, our D stuffed MSU after the failed conversion.  We were still in great position to come back and tie the game, but denard throws yet another pick on first down.  Now, you can say Vincent missed the hot read or whatever, but my biggest criticism of Denard for the past 2 years is that he throws needless INT's on first and 2nd down which are total killers.  At some point, he needs to figure out that eating the ball, throwing it away or scrambling are all better options early in series, than just chucking it up for grabs.  Even after the pick 6 there was time to come back in the game if DG didn't forget that you can't throw a pass 5 yards past the line of scrimmage.  No way the failed 4th down should have cost us the game, bad play call or not.  Sorry.

Wait a minute.  Chris Spielman said Michigan always fielded 5 Star recruits on defense, so it must be true.*

Don't kid yourself.  the

Don't kid yourself.  the timeline is effecting recruiting.  Dallas Crawford is apparently re-openning his college choice.  So one in, one out.  Plus Dee Hart was supposed to be early enroll.  that's not going to happen now.

Hoke's going to be the Coach.  Fact.  My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Brandon with Hoke at 31 Flavors last night. So, I guess it's pretty serious.

My vote, if I had one, would

My vote, if I had one, would be a "plus 1" system.  Play all the traditional bowls as they were, Pac 10 v Big 10 in the Rose, Big 12 v whoever in the Orange, SEC v whoever in the Sugar, and then chose the top 2 teams to play in the Chapionship Game.  At this point, there's almost 2 weeks between the new years day games and the BCS championship game.

I'm flip flopping like crazy

I'm flip flopping like crazy over this, but the one thing I think is important is a quick decision, and by decision, I mean either, "RR is my guy and I'm extending hime thru 2012" or "we're going in another direction".  The longer this drags, the bigger potential that it effects recruiting and retention.  Indiana Univ. was in a similar situation with Bill Lynch, one more year left on his contract (I know IU is not Michigan in terms of expectations etc).  anyway, I loved the way IU's AD Fred Glass handled the situation.  even though IU won its rivalry game and Glass had earlier said he wanted the school to live by its contracts, Glass determined that 3 Big Ten wins in 3 years did not "merit an extension."  I think that analysis was telling.  It wasn't whether or not Lynch should get one more year to fulfill his contract, it was whether the university should go further out with his leadership.  He also said he didn't want Lynch to twist in the wind.  The fact is that Glass is savy enough to know that (1) he could't keep Lynch without extending his contract; and (2) a decision needed to be made quickly.  Why?  Keeping Lynch for one year would impact recruiting down the road, and delaying a decision creates uncertainty and effects recruiting in the current class.  I'd like to get that same comfort from DB.  So far I'm not feelin it.

I liked the DB hire, but I

I liked the DB hire, but I just can't believe that waiting until after the bowl game helps anything.  All we've been saying for the last 2 years is that we need to get back to bowl games in part to get extra practices.  If RR is stayng, why not support him now, give him a chance to hire a new DC and get 15 practices under his belt?  If RR is out, why not let the new coach get a 15 practice and bowl game head start?  I can't believe that there's anything to learn in the next month that DB couldn't have gathered during the season.  He keeps claimig he knows what's happening in the lockerroon and in practice etc.  what are exit interview of the handful of seniors going to prove?  If that's what is going to sway the decision that much, I would start to doubt DB.

Right.  I'm sure Brandon's

Right.  I'm sure Brandon's told RR that he'll be back but is playing some type of game to prove that he doesn't have to reveal information until he's good and ready.  That makes perfect sense.  That way, the sportwriters and TV analysts can keep bringng it up for the next month.

All of the uncertainty brings negative publicity to Michigan football.  That effects how potential recruits view the program.  It also gives other coaches ammo for negative recruiting.

Besides those obvious things, if RR is staying, it also delays any ability to hire a different DC before the bowl game.  So the players are stuck continuing to learn the GERG philosophy for 15 more practices instead of moving on.

Youth on defense, a few bad

Youth on defense, a few bad breaks, if only we didn't turn the ball over early  . . . blah blah blah.

I know Brian will disagree, but I am now of the opinion that if Harbaugh will come, we should get him.  Whether RR "deserves" another year is not the question.  Harbaugh is probably the one and only guy that could be brought in that would totally unite the fan base.  Who's going to try to argue that he's not a good coach or doesn't understand the job or the rivalries?  if we don't get him now, he probably heads to the NFL.

Brandon needs to get to Harbaugh ASAP and get this figured out before the next week.  If Jim wants the job, sign him and let's move on.  That would give him time to work with the players before the end of the season and hopefully limit defections.  All would have to be done quickly and quietly.

If JH doesn't agree to sign now, then Brandon needs to come out and say RR is my guy for the next 2 years.  what's the purpose of waiting a month?  the big pro of being bowl eligible is getting another week of practice, but that doesn't help if you are then going to change coaches or even defensive schemes.  In that case, you've gained nothing.

Brandon keeps saying he knows everything that goes on behind closed doors, knows what the coaches are doing, understands how the players relate, etc.  what's going to change in a month?

Time to sh*t or get of the pot.  Another month of having RR dangle in the wind does nothing but harm to the program.

Parrish just got fired by

Parrish just got fired by Ball State, so he's got nothing better to do.

I love Spielman even if he

I love Spielman even if he did play at OSU.  He actually wanted to go to Michigan, but his dad wouldn't let him.  Still remember him doing the rugby dive into the endzone as a Lion.  Can we hire him as our DC?

I guess you'll be one of the

I guess you'll be one of the few to be happy that Gallon is listed first at both PR and KR in the new depth chart for OSU. Personally, I'd like to see Stonum and Cox returning kicks and Grady returning punts.

Pre-season, I thought 8-4 was

Pre-season, I thought 8-4 was realistic.  Based on 2009, I figure we could beat either MSU or Iowa at home after near misses on the road.  I chalked up Wisconsin and OSU as loses.  Consequently, yesterday’s loss was not unexpected.

Nevertheless, there were certain troubling factors:  (1) our defense really is weak.  Not just weak as in bad, but physically weak.  Chris Speilman pointed out that Michigan’s scheme wasn’t the problem, it was how weak and small we are.  Once our players get blocked, they’re done.  They don’t shed and recover.  Even Mouton was getting destroyed.  In contrast, when I watched Iowa v OSU, I noticed that even on perfectly blocked plays, defenders on both teams were able to recover and prevent the ridiculous long plays that Michigan gives up every week. (2) The coaches don’t seem to see the same personnel weaknesses that we as fans see.  Why is Gallon still returning kicks?  He’s not just bad, he’s horrific because he can’t hold on to the football.  Why did it take 11 games to get Stonum back in the kickoff return game?  Why 11 games before trying Dileo?  Same with the kicking game.  Broekheizen (sp?) is not the answer.  He blows.  Gibbons is on scholarship.  If RR is going to give anyone the benefit of the doubt, why not the kid we’re paying to play?  The defensive side has been debated all season, but yesterday confirmed to me that right now Cam Gordon may look good in a uniform, but he is not a good football player.  Poor tackling, poor angles, etc.  The one position I never noticed until the massive changes was the spur position.  Why did the coaches feel the need to mess with that?  (3)  3-3-5 doesn’t work in the Big 10, at least with our personnel.  The elite teams in the Big 10 have huge offensive linemen and like to run the football.  It’s no coincidence that these are the teams trouncing us.  The 3-3-5 may be good against the spread, thus wins over IU, Purdue and Illinois make sense, but it doesn’t hold up against MSU, Iowa, Wisconsin and soon OSU.  We need bigger bodies, not speed to compete with Big 10 elite teams.  Why don’t the coaches understand that.  We don’t need 3 safeties.  We need 4 really big dudes on the line.  Roh and Black are small.  Wouldn’t they be better as weekside DE’s in a 4 man front.  If Martin isn’t 100%, wouldn’t our line be more effective with 2 guys in the middle like Patterson and Washington?

My guess is the RR will be back, but I pray that DB gives him an ultimatum about the defensive side of the ball.  RR needs to fire GERG, hire a big name DC and get out of the way.  The other thing Speilman pointed out was that we don’t have 5 stars on defense.  I believe that this is caused by GERG and RR.  I think any big time recruit would look at us and say “why the F would I play in a 3-3-5 scheme if I want to go pro?”  It’s a valid point.  The only way to get around that is to bring in a great defensive mind that will attract great players.  I can’t imagine anyone dreaming of playing for GERG because the Broncos were awesome in 1997 or whatever.

We were sitting in the UM

We were sitting in the UM section at Purdue Saturday.  After Hopkins fumbled, the guy next to us (allegedly a UM alum) stands up says he's had enough and as he walks past me says "fire the coach."  Unfortunately, there are still too many alums that think like him and I don't think that faction will change its tune no matter how many games RR wins.

I would have liked someone to

I would have liked someone to ask RR why he didn't call timeout at the end of the first half to make Purdue have to punt.  Seemed like a no brainer at the time.

The use of Gallon to return

The use of Gallon to return kicks and punts is contrary to what we have traditionally done and what most major college teams do.  in the past, we have always used starters to return kicks and punts: AC, Desmond, Manningham, Woodson, Breaston, even the A-Train used to return kicks.  I don't like the idea of using a guy who's cold and has had no reps to come in and field kicks.  Put Shaw and Vincent or Stonum back on kickoffs and put someone like Grady out their to return punts.

in reality, until braylon

in reality, until braylon claimed it as the "jersey for the best WR", I really don't recall it being a big deal.  alexander wore it and he was the number 2 option to desmond.  plenty of other top WR's wore other numbers, like streets and manningham (86).

exactly what I was thinking.  When watching the replay, Avery follows the WR across the field which suggests man 2 man and that Mouton had coverage, but it's just as possible that we were in zone and Avery didn't release the first man and then pick up the RB.  maddening.

Actually torn ligament, but

Actually torn ligament, but same result.  Done for the year.

Why can't freshmen and

Why can't freshmen and sophmores improve over the season?  That's a ridiculous statement.  Our offense is stacked with redshirt freshmen and sophmores.  I don't see RR coming to the podium and saying that the offense can't work with underclassmen.  We have no consistent defensive philosophy and coming out each week and saying that nobody could coach these kids is getting old.  The fact that 8 games into this season we're making wholesale changes to personel is also less than comforting.

I thought we already

For the second week in a row,

For the second week in a row, we have a FG blocked and #74 Ferrara is laying on his back being stampeded by the D-lineman.  I don't understand why (a) he is in the game to begin with, or (b) why RR keeps blaming the kicker for these blocks.

"My girlfriend was the prom

"My girlfriend was the prom queen."

Are the writers forbidden

Are the writers forbidden from asking pointed questions about certain players?  There was some vague reference to Demens and Moundros, but nothing direct and no follow up.  Can't someone ask the question that we want asked . . . "Why is Obi still starting!"  Better yet, "Why is Moundros listed as the starter at MLB on the Depth Chart for the 7th week in a row when he never sees the field?"

The play that CC got toasted

The play that CC got toasted on was an all out blitz with man to man coverage.  Many on this site (including me) have been pleading for more blitzing.  This is what can happen.  Quite frankly, however, I'd rather get burned being aggressive with our rush, then sitting back in a soft zone, giving the QB all day and getting shredded.  Can't remember if that was the play I'm thinking about, but one one long pass, either Martin or Roh had a kill shot opportunity on Cousins and then inexplicably hesitated allowing him to get the throw off.

What exactly is your

What exactly is your definition of Meechigan football?  In Lloyd's last year we gave up 34 points to Ap State and 39 to Oregon to open the season.  In 2005 we were 7-5.  Give it a rest.  I had to endure a pack of idiots behind me Saturday calling for (1) Harbaugh as coach, and (2) Forcier to replace Denard.  I like what we're doing on offense.  If not for a couple of bad reads, that game Saturday would have been a replay of the IU game.  Our D sucks.  I agree, but give the other stuff a rest.

Thirded

Not sure how that's any better to the videos above where Brian points out that 2 yard gains turn to 4 and then 6.  Cam hits, doesn't wrap and the receiver gets another 5 yards.
