The MGoBlog/DraftStreet 40k Tourney
Update 3/20: We filled the initial pool so DraftStreet started a second pool of up to 1,000 people with $20k on the line. You can still use the links below and you'll be redirected to new pool. You will still be automatically entered in the MGoBlog tourney. If you entered the $40k one already you won't be moved or anything.
This is not a bracket game. This is better.
Money? MGofantasy partner DraftStreet is letting us enter/run a mini-game within their $40,000 (40k one is filled; now entering the $20k one) March Madness fantasy contest. The top 250 125 finishers, i.e. those who make it to the 4th and final round (there are max 2,000 entries in a pool so one in eight entries wins) will split the $40k $20k in prize money, and those who enter through us also get a shot at designing the next MGoShirt or free MGoStore loot.

The Game Explained: For those of you who've rolled our games before you know the drill. For those who haven't, the way it works is you "draft" a team on a salary cap basis: every player has a pre-assigned value based on their production, and you get $100,000 to fit three forwards, three guards, and a pair of stretch players onto your roster. So for example if you start with Doug McDermott, Russ Smith, Jabari Parker and Casey Prather you'll have spent about $80k and will have to fill the rest of your team with scrubs to come in under the cap.
The Contest: Runs through the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament, i.e. Thursday 3/20 through Sunday 3/23. It's a four-day survival system: those who finish in the top half each day "survive" to the next, until final standings are determined by score on the last day.
The official name is the CBB $40,000 Blowout. Your team(s) will be competing among up to 2,000 entries. There's a $22 entry fee, OR each day before it begins, you can enter a side game for $2 or $5 and win your buy-in.
The MGoContest: Entries from MGoBlog get double-entered into our mini-pool, wherein the Top 5 finishers get to pick any shirt from the MGoStore. The champion gets to help us design the next MGoShirt (must keep to rules of propriety, licensed property, and NCAA rules, e.g. profiting from specific players). You come up with the concept and we'll turn in into a shirt, put it in the store, and send you three of them to give out to friends/family/enemies.
To be in our pool you don't have to do anything extra; just use the links from our site to get to the contest site and I'll track it.
Is there a button I should press or something?
Detail-like substances: You can't play if you're registering from from Arizona, Iowa, Louisiana, Montana, Vermont, or Puerto Rico, because of some anti-gambling internet laws in those places. Must be 18+. Amount of people advancing is predetermined so if <2,000 entries are in the league the top 1,000/500/250 still advance each day. DraftStreet is running the show under their rules.
my kid was in diapers in a BMW, and literally had a $40,000 blowout. No pics, sorry.
Don't Buy Cheap Diapers!
Bracket open to Canadians?
Do you pick a whole new team every day? Or is it one team for all four days and if your dudes get bounced, so be it?
From DraftStreet's Max Stern:
Nice to meet you. Each user picks a new team each day(if they advance). The top half of the pool moves on to day 2 then to day 3 etc.

Man. I just spent quite a while rating players on the assumption that you pick a team and that's that for the 4 days. It does explain why teams likely to lose have players with such high salary values.
Where are these kinds of rules specific to a tournament posted? (EDIT - I guess it's implied in that the half moving on are automatically entered into a new tournament each day. Just didn't make sense initially).
The general rules help but they leave some gaps. For example how does the Utility position work? Does that just mean you can pick any position to fill that roster slot?

Hey Maracle,
Here is the specific link for the CBB Blowout which should answer all of your questions http://www.draftstreet.com/cbb-blowout2.aspx
The Utility spot can be used for any player at any position.

Thanks. Very helpful, looks like it should be fun. Hopefully I get lucky with my simplistic method of drafting!
Where does the $2 profit go? If it goes to the blog, I'm 100% in, if it goes elsewhere, I'm 100% out, if its split, then I am split.
Well they're paying us to promote it, and they're footing the bill for our liveblog on Thursday, and that's more than the $2 x however many entries we're likely to get them.
Their goal is to get more people used to playing their games, figuring the more fun you have now the more you're likely to play again.
I'm pretty much addict to draftstreet during baseball season. It is fun stuff and can actually make you money if you know sports.
So I'm in Iowa...How can I do this?
I mean, srsly ppl, HOW CAN I DO THIS?! I know there's a way around the laws....Let's get illegal around here guys!
Proxy? Have a "friend" in another state help you out?
Right, I just wish I knew how to do this stuff.
(Though the Deep Web sounds easy enough by just using different browser and "what not".)
I am not being that cryptic. You must know someone who lives in a different state. If you trust them, have them sign up for an account and you play as them. If you win, give them a cut.
Ah, you were just being sensible! I do have a few in near by states, however, I feel like I've tried to navigate the DraftStreet website before and check out the "games/bets" but the website knew I was in Iowa and wouldn't even let me navigate very far (let alone sign up). It'd be hard to do this type of thing without having access to the necessary webpages and so that's kind of where I was coming from, sorry to sound/read a bit obtuse.
I will try again when I get home and see how this could work out, I may be wrong on the above and just need to be a bit "sneakier".
B-Nut if you're actually serious about your desire to enter, I'd be glad to do it for you and send my contact info.
Sounds good, thanks. I will let you know. (See my above response and previous issue with trying to use the website...again, I could have just been doing it wrong and having actual information may allow me to navigate the website).
I would enter, but I'm sort of a fan of not throwing away money.
Do I draft players who only play Thursday for the first day ?

Yes!

Didn't read. Thought this was a bracket. Paid money. Still don't have a bracket. But I do have a pretty solid team if you ask me.
Bracket update:
I signed up for the billion dollar bs. Final Four of Kansas vs. Iowa St. & SDSU vs. Michigan. Gross. #DeathToAllOneSeedsAndTheNationalFavoritesMSUFightingIzzos
I accidentally clicked it too fast...now I have 2 teams. Is that allowed? i had to pay 44 but not mad about it.
from experience, it is allowed but if you didn't mean to contact DS support and they can probably remove one of your teams. They are really good with the customer service stuff.
Thanks for the info. I am going to keep my teams. I get to play more MIchigan players.
March 19th, 2014 at 11:02 AM ^
Yes, each user is allowed to have up to 25 entries.
Max
how close did everyone get? I got within $6 and $10
March 18th, 2014 at 10:36 PM ^
I actually mananged to buy a team and spend every single dollar. Do I get a bonus prize for that?
i did that once for baseball and was so proud of myself before i lost terribly.
I'm guessing no va if we live abroad since no one else seems to be reporting the shit show of a website experience I'm dealing with.

Clicked too fast. Didn't realize this wasn't a Warhammer 40k competition. Think my team of Chaos Marines can still win? I think Chaos Sorcerer Ahriman's devotion to Tzeentch will carry him deep into March.

Crap, am I that old? People playing this after I stopped maybe 15 years ago?
Seth,
I joined and am participating via the above link, but now that I think about it, I may not have been logged into mgoblog. Is this a problem, regarding you tracking it for the mgostore prizes ????
And second, when I submitted my players, it asked if I wanted to add them to two other public pools, to which I refused...I hope that this wasn't the parallel mgoblog pool.
Please advise.
You didn't need to log into MGoBlog. If you took a link they tracked it. If you're worried about it, and you end up kicking ass, email me your score and I'll forward to the Draftstreet guys.

So doing tomorrow's draft is going to be killer. It's going to be almost midnight before the last game ends and we get entered in the day 2 draft.
I assume the draft values for tomorrow's games are fixed already. I see tournaments available to register for just that day.
Is there any way to get the spreadsheet for a tournament to look over before joining it? It would be nice if I could get working on my plans for Sunday games on Saturday.
I guess I could enter a $2 daily for the next day but if there's an easier way that would be great.
geez..i finish 1790 of 2000.... and i did a simple pt per $ calculation, thinking i'd have no problem advancing.... WHOOPS...
March 21st, 2014 at 10:26 AM ^
I finished 6th yesterday (Had Payne of course and Morgan with his double-double helped), but pretty sure I'll finish 896 today. Couldn't decide who to pick for today's games.
