WTKA Roundtable 8/19/2021: Big Red Pilled Comment Count

Seth August 19th, 2021 at 11:09 AM

Things discussed:

  • Northwestern lost their starting RB: Meh, they were on their downswing anyway. Their QB situation is way more alarming than their RB situation.
  • Big Ten West: Wisconsin’s or Iowa’s, Graham Mertz was great against Illinois but just okay against the rest. He’s not a world-beater. They’re still going to Wisconsin though.
  • Nebraska investigation. The S&C guy ran illicit practices and their analysts were coaches. THIS IS TRUE ABOUT EVERY POWER 5 SCHOOL. They buried the lede: Frost told the S&C coach to hide it from the administrators to practice during COVID.
  • Seth: Every program is using their analysts as coaches. Alabama started it, Ohio State was doing it, the NCAA had a moment to do something and did not. Not going to hold Nebraska’s feet to the fire for doing what Rich Rod did. They ARE guilty of cheating around COVID, which endangered the rest of the Big Ten, and not just their seasons.
  • There’s a difference between ignoring bad rules that everyone ignores, and ignoring COVID protocols to get an edge.
  • When you cheat you’re not supposed to have the head coach leave a record of saying “Let’s go cheat.”
  • Need to hammer this: Nebraska should be in trouble for breaking COVID, not for breaking NCAA rules that everyone breaks.
  • Nebraska was so immature about this, and still think they’re the ones who “Saved Big Ten Football” last year. They tried to get an edge by putting everyone else in danger.
  • Seth: It’s really hard for people to see a black market, because nobody who covers these teams wants to report their teams and sound like sour grapes if they turn in another team. So people don’t understand the nuances because we don’t inform them ahead of time.
  • NCAA Future: The Big Ten-ACC-Pac12 have different needs than the rest of the NCAA. Could they split off? Only the NCAA Basketball Tournament to worry about.
  • SEC’s problem: They made enemies of their coalition of the corrupt.
  • Fall practice: Barrett losing out to Hill-Green? Good for NHG; Barrett’s game was not linebacker.
  • OL: They’re saying nice things about Filiaga because he’s in the process of losing his job to Keegan, and people don’t understand these things are subtle.
  • Not subtle: the players like Sherrone Moore way more than Ed Warinner.

The "every else breaks the rule so I can too" argument is something a third-grader says. If it's a rule and you knowingly broke it, then you're guilty. If "everyone" is taking PEDs and helping students cheat in class, it's okay if you do it too? "But, your honor, everyone else was driving 90 too!" Good lord.

on the last 2 lines ....

  • OL: They’re saying nice things about Filiaga because he’s in the process of losing his job to Keegan, and people don’t understand these things are subtle.

The number 1 reason i have been worried about the OL is because Filiaga's name keeps popping up.  If Filiaga is truly about even at the guard position to start, then were fucked at the OL position.  I have said it since he was recruited - he will not be (is not) good.  His feet/agility is some of the worst i have seen at the OL position, and im not sure why the fuck we even recruited him. He as an average run blocker though, but on passing downs, he is such a liability.  Seems like a nice kid though.

  • Not subtle: the players like Sherrone Moore way more than Ed Warinner.

I really don't care who anyone likes better, give me the better coach.  Is Sherrone Moore the better coach?  I hope he is.  There have been may bosses/managers i have liked, but they weren't worth a shit at their job.  There have been a couple i did not like.  One was extremely good at his job (one wasn't) - its not a popularity contest.  Its a teaching contest.

If you don't get along with your boss, and you're pretty sure it's him/her and not you, then you have a shitty boss.

A big part of being a good boss is supporting the troops (assuming they're doing consistently good work) and making it easier to get work done. If you have to wonder whether your boss is in your corner you'll never be sure of that support.

I've had people beneath me on the org chart that I didn't like or respect, but I did my best to keep it to myself and help them get work done.

Can't stand people managers. I don't need you to tell me I do a good job. I'm still getting paid, and you haven't told me I'm NOT doing OK, that's enough.

Let me alone to do what I'm getting paid to do, be the heavy when I need it and make decisions when I come to you for them. That's what you are paid for. If you can't make decisions I've got no use for you at all.

Agreed on Filiaga. I don't know enough about "feet" or whatever it is that makes him not-that-good to my eyes. I know this; when he would stop moving on a play, it was not-good-Bob. By the time he got back to speed to wherever he was headed the play was over. And if someone touched him, even slightly, from a direction he wasn't expecting, he went over like the Titanic.

He's been a good soldier, but I hope someone beats him out. I've heard nothing bad about the guy, so I hope he's done well in school, and earns millions of bucks somewhere with that degree.

Nebraska obviously did a lot of shady, unacceptable crap.  However, they can absolutely take some credit for saving the BIG10 season.  OSU and Nebraska and their threatening to move conference absolutely forced the BIGs hand to rethink their cancellation.  Of course we had an absolutely atrocious season so I would’ve rather had it cancelled.

Perhaps true and I’m quite aware that OSU has much more power than lowly Nebraska.  The fact remains their actions garnered significant media attention and there was very little movement prior to this ‘empty and laughable’ threat.  Again, I said “partial” credit.  The real credit goes to the SEC as the BIG saw all of the money they were missing out on. I would’ve rather not had a season though.

Seth, just wanted to let you know I think you’re very good and entertaining with these round tables. Very enjoyable to listen to. Brian can be very monotone and difficult to hear at times. Anyway, keep kicking ass my friend, your hard work is very appreciated!!

These things seem connected. Maybe there's a space for informing readers about these things. Who can say though?
