WTKA Roundtable 11/17/2022: Archosaur Socialism Comment Count

Seth November 17th, 2022 at 11:00 AM

Things discussed:

  • Offense vs Nebraska: Ability to execute the run game is on a ludicrous level. 7 million run plays, only 5 of them went <2 yards and one of those was 2nd and goal from the 2.
  • Defense vs Nebraska: Throttled a bad opponent, but if you can pretend they don't suck there are questions about the pass rush, since they don't have the dudes to win 1-on-1 battles.
  • OL is set up for long-term success—lots of backups performing. They can run power with so many different guys they're messing with keys.
  • We have a "Wide Receiver Insert" play—Ronnie Bell the fullback—which set up the PA touchdown.
  • The way to turn this into explosives is to activate the JJ running game, which they only did for PSU so far.
  • Brian on OSU: I think Michigan can replicate what Evan Hull was able to do. Day had to bring out his Arc Read play that he was surely saving for Michigan. Will have to prepare for Stroud to run some.
  • Seth: Michigan fans are having two conversations: the one about the team that is destroying Big Ten-caliber competition, and the team that extrapolates to in the Playoffs, which for all intents and purposes start next week.
  • Need to get pressure on Stroud: Seth thinks the DTs getting pressure vs their long guards is the key, and a key unknown. Can this OSU receiver corps replicate last year's performance with their skill players banged up?
  • Illinois: Chase Brown injury could kill them—they're not a deep shot team, but they're going to make Michigan hit them because they blitz and man up. Lots of Wisconsin to them: Alex Drain talked about their running game. Unfortunately for them Michigan has seen all of that every week in practice.
  • Hoops: Need to get Jett's defense cleaned up, found their pace against Pitt, Baker/Howard shooting will come down yes but the guards' shooting (Bufkin is 1/10 and Llewellyn is 0/8) is going to come up. Shooters around Hunter Dickinson is one hell of an offense. Bufkin has shown he can D. Like bringing Barnes off the bench to replace Howard when they have a big lead because he can D as well.

I'm really curious who is saying that Barnes can play defense.  He's played a total of 6 minutes and last night in his cameo he gave up a back-door cut for a dunk.  I realize that Jett and Baker suck at defense too....but there is zero data to suggest Barnes is better.

Sam:  Enough about Ohio State; let's talk about Illinois!

Craig:  Did you guys watch the Toledo-Bowling Green game?

Me:  . . .

(I realize it was a break, but that was amusing)

I know Illinois has come down the last two weeks as they choked away winnable games to MSU and Purdue.  I just hope we aren't sleeping on these guys though.  If Brown is healthy he will be the best RB we face all year.  Their defense, while limping to the finish, may be the best one we've faced all year also.  I'm glad this game is at home but I hope the coaches aren't overlooking Illinois as much as most people on this site are.

It's interesting because Illinois is mini-Michigan.  They don't have our athletes, but they run the same offense, so unless it's Nebraska redux (waiting for that FFFF, Alex), I don't think we can go vanilla on them.

I know everyone's going "don't look past them to Ohio State" but the way OSU prepares for us, we have to look at Illinois in the context of, "How do we dispatch these guys while giving up as little as possible?"  Illinois is better than they've been, that's gotta be respected, but we can't go full Hoke/Borges and roll into Columbus with a banged-up roster and no cards up our sleeves.

So, the ideal scenario for Michigan is kind of like how we handle Iowa -- July drive an early lead, then put away the trick bag and bleed the clock, Lloyd Carr style.  I don't want to show too much of what we've been saving for OSU, but if Brown's hobbled, shucks, 13 points might be enough to salt the game.

The only 2 games Senior year Brady lost he scored over 30, but the D gave up 35+ (including to Rocky Harvey).

Brady also won games where the D gave up over 30.

2 things -

1) how did so many (Brent Musberger not included, he loved TB) not see this kid was a WINNER?!

2) The D sucked in '99! Rewatch the Illinois, msu, psu games, or Orange Bowl vs Bama. Track meets!

This D doesn't suck!

Sam: “I try to deal with the people in the extremes - those that are like ‘oh my god we can’t complete a downfield pass. And those that are ‘nothing to see here, who cares if we can’t complete a downfield pass’?  But there is a happy medium; they are 10-0

Weird.   When Michigan was rolling last year, all Sam & Devin could talk about was how much Cade was costing the team big plays.  They repeatedly said he was good enough to beat the rest of the Big Ten, but “you aren’t beating Ohio State doing that”

Such bullshit.

Sam wants to see more success with downfield passes. He’s just not having a panic attack for two reasons:

1) We beat OSU last year and we do not have a drop-off talent-wise at QB. So you can thank Cade for helping allay Sam’s fears.

2) JJ is inherently more athletic and dynamic than Cade, so the ability exists to be more explosive still.

Vance Bedford on with Sam this week said UM should do what Georgia did to Tennessee, which was blitz a lot and early in the game.  It did work for Georgia.  Would it for Michigan?

"Dline isn't great they haven't played great olines, the oline is great" but haven't played anyone either . Sorry but saying the oline is playing like 5* is only true if they do it against a Georgia. We saw this last year.

Whine, whine, whine.  We also saw an O-line beat the crap out of a very highly rated OSU team full of 4 & 5 star recruits last year.  Tells us a few things:

1). It is very possible that they can do it again.

2)  Recruiting ranking are projections.  Hassan Haskins, Cade McNamara, Ronnie Bell, and Blake Corum thumb their noses at measures that evaluate people by anything beyond what they actually do on a college football field.

3)  Who exactly has OSU played that compares to us?  It’s a two way street.
