We're Going Back to Camp! Sanderson Retained
The first staff announcement from Coach Howard has arrived, and it's as welcome as it was obvious. Well-regarded basketball trainer Jon Sanderson will remain at Michigan.
〽️ Nation! I'm pleased to announce that @CampSanderson - an integral part of the program the last 10 years - will be staying in Ann Arbor.

His reputation precedes him — I’m definitely looking forward to witnessing that first workout.
GO BLUE!!
He's also got several minutes to enjoy having more followers than Juwan. Michigan can look forward to more baby stick figures who turn into Caris Leverts, not to mention the benefit that "remember what Tim Hardaway Jr. looked like before he got here?" etc. has done for Michigan recruiting.

Howard has three assistant positions yet to fill, with Michigan fans very much hoping to retain either or both of Luke Yaklich and Saddi Washington to maintain continuity and help Howard with the transition to college. There's nothing else new to add to the Assistant Coach Searchbits from yesterday except Jeff Goodman reported longtime NBA player/assistant Howard Eisley, once a high school teammate of Jalen Rose in Detroit, is rumored to be a candidate.
Howard paying dividends already!
I mean, this is a no brainer for both sides but good he didn't mess it up.
One would think retaining Yaklich would be a no brainer too, but that's Howards first real test, IMO.
I'd like to see Yaklich retained, but Howard needs to make sure that they'd both be on the same page about how the defense should be run. If they have differing philosophies, for example, then maybe it would be best for Yaklich to look elsewhere.
I'm NOT saying I don't want Yaklich back. I hope Howard keeps him on staff, because his results speak for themselves, he offers continuity for the current players, and he is a great recruiter. But Howard should be allowed to build this team in his own image.
I think also that bringing one of the two Assistants back is the way to go. Sometimes, if you have a full team of assistants (regardless of the profession) under a new boss, you get the whispering behind his back. The gossipy talk about how the old boss was better at this or that. I think you bring one back, and get a fresh 2nd.
Everyone brings up LeVert and THJ, but do people remember what Teske looked like his freshman year versus what he looks like now? It's night and day
He's not only bulked up but his stamina is crazy. Impressive shit.
He's slimmed down, bulked up, his stamina has increased, and he's noticeably more bouncy
But FAST!
This is great news, I have a great feeling about this Juwan fella....he seems like a smooth dude!
Anyone have that group picture of shirtless Ricky Doyle, Duncan Robinson, etc.?
Unashamedly asking on behalf of all Michigan hoops fans who believe in Camp Sanderson.
Username checks out. (Obligatory.)
Now keep Yaklich and add Howard Eisley along with an experienced/former head coach type and this staff will be ?
Super happy about this. He has a way of getting prospects to bulk up AND have stamina-- without looking all 'roided up.
Poor DeAndre Haynes, who has never been mentioned at all in anything I've read about the coaching search/assistant coach retention, or really anywhere else for that matter. There are plausible reasons for this, he hasn't been here as long as Saadi Washington (who was also the associate head coach of course) and he isn't the one with the most credit for the complete defensive turnaround, but I still find it funny that after reading all of the coaching search articles and casually following the team I had to google who the third assistant was.
Deandre Haynes was the one who called the offensive sets during the game.
He had big responsibilities that go un-noticed.
Thanks for filling me in more on his role! Even googling for a bit I couldn't find much . . .
Yeah, I'm partially responsible for that. But Yaklich is a wundercoach who built an elite D with Wagner and Dunc on it, and Saddi was the right hand man--and at times interim HC--of the greatest coach we've had at Michigan. Haynes seems the obvious odd man out.
Willing to admit that a 3rd Assistant didnt really even cross my mind as a thing.
Howard Eisley is a back court coach. Who is the current assistant that coaches the PG position? Hiring Howard would be great for recruiting of Detroit area.
Excellent news, pretty obvious decision to keep him. The current assistants are great, but Juwan will want one or two of his own guys and Eisley would be an outstanding choice.
Retaining Sanderson big win. Eisley rumor really interesting. Detroit roots, NBA pedigree. Could be fantastic lead for backcourt development.
