There's a notable difference between third-party blog reaction and that from newspapers. Blogs first, with a focus on people who don't love or hate Michigan because of their team affiliations. Doctor Saturday:

Stare into the face of bureaucracy, Michigan, and quiver at its awesome power.

Know also that every program in the country -- and I'm pretty confident when I say every program -- would run afoul of at least one of those infractions (or similar ones; it's a big manual) on a somewhat regular basis, as the minimum cost of employing fallible human being while continuing to dead-lift with the Joneses. Other programs, however, weren't the target of an investigation by a major metropolitan newspaper that left no stone unturned in its efforts to make a splash against a high-profile program. Michigan was, which is why it was Michigan's coach, president and new athletic director (not even officially on the job for two more weeks) in front of the cameras today feigning contrition over barely spilt milk.

Team Speed Kills, which from its name you can probably deduct is an SEC blog:

That's it?
If this is all the NCAA could find after having a newspaper article for a road map, it leads to the conclusion that either (a) the Detroit Free-Press blew this way out of proportion or (b) the Association is even more incompetent than I thought. Since I'm not sure (b) is possible, we'll go with (a).

Get The Picture:

…when you look at what the NCAA is accusing Michigan of, there isn’t that much there.  So, yeah, the school is likely the victim of some journalistic hyperventilating by the Detroit Free-Press.

The Big Lead's Ty Duffy has a somewhat more negative take; he is a Michigan fan in the "kill him now" camp and not a neutral third party. I've scoured the RSS for other opinions, but the charges pass without notice most places. More locally, Black Shoe Diaries takes issue with DocSat's assertion that similar violations would be turned up everywhere:

We don't have any idea what's going on anywhere, I think that's the news.

Neither Yahoo blogger nor beat reporter and maybe not even football coach really are certain of anything; the rules are complex, all the source material is totally unattainable for most of us and we don't have an enforcement agency with the power to comfortably investigate.

Of course, like critics of the tax code often say, it's probably the complexity of the rules that make enforcement impossible and hopelessly selective.

Other prominent Big Ten blogs like Black Heart Gold Pants and The Only Colors haven't even mentioned it. Eleven Warriors is fairly neutral:

…the allegations fall somewhere in between the minor and serious realms. The quality control staff is in position to take the blunt of the heat with Brandon reiterating Rodriquez’s job was not in imminent danger as a result of the findings — which I don’t think any of us ever doubted.

The yawning is everywhere.

Newspaper folk, on the other hand, tend towards the hysterical. The Wizard of Odds, which is a blog but is a blog written by a LAT refugee, demonstrates the overall tone:

Rich Rod Era at Michigan Reaches a New Low

Indeed. This guy in the "Niles Star" is about to get more hits than he's ever gotten in his life:

It’s time that the University of Michigan cuts its ties with coach Rich Rodriguez.
Tuesday was one of the lowest days in Michigan football history as the NCAA delivered its notice of allegations against the program.

I don't think this counts as a disinterested party, but the Orlando Sentinel's Andrea Adelson:

It is hard to figure out how Rich Rodriguez is going to survive this — no matter what incoming athletic director David Brandon says.

AnnArbor.com's Pete Bigelow unearths things like the Jonas Mouton Suspension Fiasco and the completely reasonable decision to negotiate the buyout in yet another This Hick Spit In Michigan's Vase (and that's "vaaahse,: not "vace") column:

At the time, Rodriguez dismissed the allegations as “unnecessary drama.”

Concerns can no longer be brushed aside. Not about the NCAA charges in particular nor the way Rodriguez conducts his program in general.

In too many instances, some large and some small, Rodriguez has written his own reality to the detriment of his program and the university.

Wojo's his usual reasonable self but even his column is a far cry from the "meh" you see above:

The NCAA didn't accuse Rodriguez's program of breaking the biggest rules, and Michigan said the violations weren't done in a malicious way. And Rodriguez won't lose his job over this, not now.

But for Michigan football, previously untainted by the NCAA, any violation is big. For Rodriguez, it doesn't help his cause, but it doesn't really change much either.

Does anyone else find it odd that with the "real" journalists careers in danger, the bloggers of the world are the ones who report with calm reflection and thought out analysis, while the old media journalists put out over-hyped hysteria in a last ditch effort to get attention? I thought that's why we weren't able to trust news and commentary from bloggers... what an odd flip.

The Freep is the journalistic equivalent of a strung out, broke bumm who'd whore out his own mother if it offered him the chance to get more attention, increase clicks and shore up advertising revenues. I guess journalistic integrity doesn't sell advertising. You'd think favoring the home team would help sell local advertising, but not as much as breaking national, attention grabbing, feaux scandals does, sacrificial home team be damned. Seriously, don't drive 57 mph in front of the Freep's 55 mph zone, or they'll tell the authorities on you, even though EVERYONE DOES IT. If I still lived in Michigan (I'm in DC), I swear I would set up a picket line in front of the Freep over this.

You guys are late. I don't click on or acknowledge the Detroit Free Press. It is apparent that they have an agenda. That, to me, is not journalism. I know UM is not perfect, but they are'nt the devil either. I will check out The Detriot News, Scout, Rivals, WTKA, and MGoBlog etc. Kiss my... well you know. No Freep!

Anyone notice how quickly MSM people in Detroit were to discuss how the Freep was "right" or "vindicated"? That was Sharp's first reaction - to declare the Freep (his employer)to be "vindicated". They didn't want to talk about the actual story, it was all meta and declaring victory. I think this is very telling. The local MSM folks were worried about this to the point that they needed to control the "Freep was right angle" more than they needed to report the story. The folks who used to make buggy whips think these guys are weak. That said - it ain't good, but it ain't the end of the world. If RR wins, this will die. If he has another season or two like 08 and 09, this wont matter.

"That was Sharp's first reaction - to declare the Freep (his employer)to be 'vindicated'." You should get a minus for even knowing what Drew Sharp wrote about this subject. That guy has no credibility or perspective. He just blurts out whatever's on his mind regardless of his knowledge. For instance, he demanded the Red Wings retire Hasek's number after the 2008 season. Hasek is one of the best ever, but spent all of three non-consecutives seasons with the Wings... but everyone gather 'round, Drew Sharp's got an informed opinion...

For complete remediation, I propose that Michigan offer to end all athletics for the 2009-2010 season, and all records from said season be wiped from the record books for all eternity. Then in September, we start with a clean slate. How 'bout them apples, Michigan Hating God!

I'm sure there are several other major programs that stretch the NCAA practice rules. But we will never know since they will never be attacked by their local hometown papers. I just hope the punishment is light. I was hoping this would be wrapped up by now, but now we will have wait until August! I'm glad mgoblog is here for us real UM fans! Brian and his staff does a great job providing the best info and analysis. Most of the other blogs out there are worthless and infested with anti-UM trolls!

Yes, bad for reading Drew Sharp. The poignant thing to take away from this extends beyond Michigan. It shows that reporters are no longer willing to find the facts. I'm not referring to the original story. Brian found a NCAA guy, seemingly randomly, and interviewed him. The Freep? Just wrote their opinions and speculation. If the print can not figure out how to utilize the internet beyond "This just in: kids can look at porn on the internet" or "News flash: emails that ask for your bank info may not be legitimate", then they really are headed down tabloid-row. I have not visited the freep website to see if they have any such interviews. I suspect that they don't. But in blogosphere world, where truthiness and wikiality prevail, Mgoblog managed to find an -anonymous- NCAA employee and interview him. We believe he's legit because... look at his blog. So, print media, I suggest you start using your power of the press to interview "experts", and if they want to hide in anonymity then do your best to protect them without skewing what they are saying.

I know now the MSM would cry foul but slowly RR has to clamp down on access. I sure miss Lloyds venom towards the media. RR needs to develope the Llyod/Parcells/Belichick stance when dealing with these vultures. Here in New England Belichick is funny as heck with the local Patroits radio network because they'll never back stab him, Press Conf. get the no info Robot and it drive the MSM nuts.

I'm pissed about this. I'm one of the folks who ISNT A RR HATER but who expected him to be fired by 2010 over a combination of piss poor results and because his system won't work here (to the level we expect). You all know this, you all know it's my opinion, so no need to neg me for stating my earlier position. But... I think RR is done. Fired. I think UM will get more than a wrist slap. And it's over this silly workout bullshit that EVERY big time program does. There is not a SINGLE coach at a school that actually can dream about winning a NC that doesn't let everyone know that he expects them to give "110%" in the gym regardless of any "voluntary" rules. It's sad that it has come to this.
