Quintel Kent Commits To Michigan Comment Count

Brian

Michigan's picked up one of those three-star sleeper WRs out of Ohio, Quintel Kent:

Kent is rated outside the top 1000 by 24/7 and doesn't have a composite ranking or another Power 5 offer. Michigan's been pretty good about getting out ahead of the curve in this cycle, with several different commits seeing steep rises once the crootin sites caught up, but here they're really taking a swing at a deep sleeper. 24/7 only has five articles on him, all of which came after Michigan got involved.

Bill Greene does have a "commit analysis" that someone forgot to update the date on—it says it's from a week ago—that will probably be the bulk of the scouting on Kent for a while:

This is a very fundamentally sound, extremely solid and productive wide receiver, and Kent is probably a player that is being added for his versatility by Michigan. Keep in mind that this was not a player they offered based on film from October of 2017 like we are watching, but from a stellar camp appearance from June.

More on Monday.

So he's this year's Ronnie Bell? Shouldn't Jim Harbaugh, who I think we all agree is a top 5 coach in the country, be able to recruit better at the WR position than this?

Very happy for this kid, but WR recruiting is borderline atrocious right now.

I LOVE the 2017 WR class, but you do realize that those guys aren't going to be here forever right? We've gotten four WR commits over the last 3 classes -two whom didn't have any power 5 offers, one whom is a high school quarterback, and the last of which isn't getting here for another two years. All of them are 3 star recruits. None of them are taller than 6 feet. You have to restock the cupboards every year. If you think this is an acceptable level of recruiting at Michigan then let's just agree to disagree.

Why did the QB's get injured? Because the OL sucked. Why did the OL suck? Because the scheme was too complicated and they recruited zero tackles in the 2016 recruiting class. Why did we have to rely on a bunch of freshman WR's? Because the WR's they signed in 2016 weren't any good.

I'm kind of over all the excuses for this coaching staff to be honest.

Every time I see these types of recent accounts show up, one whose first comment appears to be a defense of Bluey, I just wonder if it's the same guy again.  I mean, the twitter feed that everyone sort of figured out was him has basically the same stream of complaints.

Yep valiantvictor is bluey aka Maizen. Same exact type of comments. Acts like he knows everything about recruiting because he has a 247 membership, uses quotes from Brian to prove his point, etc.

He's outed his new account on the first commit since his last banishing. Amazing this guy keeps making new accounts just to bitch about recruits and argue with everyone on the board.

Even though the points are broken and I seemed to have lost all mine and the ability to vote, its worth it if points are frozen forever and bluey never gets to start another stupid thread to bash a recruit.

John O'Korn already explained this.

Unfortunately, the idiots like you of our fan base seem to stick out like my morning wood, sooooo we have to settle for a lot of 3* underachievers.

But it's cool, I still root for them, maybe even a little more since they're underdogs; plus, they seem to really appreciate the education aspect more than the guys who are just waiting to get to the next level.

In the end though, I don't care what stars they are, just find the ones who have respect for women.

College sports are already broken enough because of the NCAA, but if they don't drop this misogynistic and exploitative bullshit it all can burn.

Let's compare each of those players to a possible comp already on the roster:

Terrell - DPJ

Walker - Tarik

Avant - Oliver M

Funchess - Nico

Breaston  - McDoom

Manningham - R. Bell? (Don't know, not played yet)

Aside from trying to comp Super Mario, one of the MOST productive M players ever for 3 years, this is a pretty feasible comparison!

Ok, So you like that list. Here's another:

The celebrated 4 WR class now spread over class of '20 & '21 (with usual proviso IF they exhaust eligibility)

So them plus McDoom & Bell ALL on team in '19 also. Add M. Barrett who's a slot/H-back/Pepcat type.

Kyle Ford has M in top group, so that's a possibility.

Now we're looking at '20 before we even need to THINK about who'll take snaps.

By then we COULD sign as many as 6-8 WR, many of which we have NO idea who they'll be.

So now you're bitching about this ONE player with limited but VERY productive play thus far, who comes from a MAJOR talent pipeline, who Greene says is blowing up in camps.

Then, the TE pos is SO stacked TWJr just bailed cuz he saw where he was gonna be on the depth chart. And more coming!

And Eric Gray, RB/slot combo...

We're just NOT lacking for potential targets in the pass game, man!

But the problem is, NONE of it matters IF we don't get improved OL play going forward. It ALL hinges on that

Focus your concern trolling on THAT!

Good Day!

There's more than a bit of accuracy in everyone's posts.

This commitment is hardly inspiring, given that it was earned by a camp performance, something none of us saw.

On the other hand, far too early to be nervous about the future of the position 2-3 years down the road.

Frankly no, it really isn't.  It's very unlikely that anyone we recruit as a WR in 2019 is going to be a real contributor until 2020 at the earliest, so the guys we're recruiting right now are players we'll be depending on in 2020 and 2021, 2 and 3 years down the road.

So far, NO doubt. But I made a comparison of players on the roster skillsets with players Victor Maizen Bluey reminisces about. You would certainly have to add Funchess>>>>Nico so far too, rignt?!

Terrelll>>>>>>>>>DPJ? CUMONG!!! (Go cue up that Orange Bowl!!!)

His 1st 2 seasons Breaston only returned kicks, his receiving was all after Braylon.

The ONLY WR I saw used to the best of their abilities in '17 was Tarik, and that was for all of 2+ gms. Due to many factors, some beyond control.

But definitely was not suggesting McDoom has accomplished anywhere NEAR what Breaston did thus far!

Yep, sounds like another Perry and I have no issue taking a few receivers like that, plus they saw him at camp.  My only concern is the lack of outside WRs.  They only took a smaller WR last year, now have a couple this year in George Johnson and now Kent, and have offers out to Giles Jackson and Wandale Robinson(though Kent may have taken their spot).  With only a few spots left in the class they can likely only take 1 more WR, and don't lead for either of their outside WR targets; Ford and Cornelius Johnson.

According to MaxPreps he only played in 3 games last year so that explains why he is rated so low. Theres not much film on him. In those three games he scored 7 TDs and had 414 yds. Not sure if it was injury or he was buried on the depth chart because his HS team is pretty good. Also looks like they are going to play Cass Tech this year.

When the poster I replied to referred to stars "mattering" he was suggesting that stars give an indication of how good a player will be in college. I pointed out that it is generally true for heavily scouted players and not true for lightly scouted players. I'm not sure how you get from that to thinking that I wouldn't be happy to have RG on the team if the scouts had been wrong in their predictions about him.

Kent’s high school St Edwards is probably the most heavily scouted high school in Ohio. Bill Greene said his ranking is accurate. No other power 5 coach offered, so the “look at his offer” list crowd has moved onto their next argument...trust the coaches. God forbid anyone has an original thought of their own.
