Preseason Blogpoll Final Ballot Comment Count

Tim

My final entry for the preseason blogpoll.

A few responses to comments left for the draft ballot (and yes, a lot of them were legit comments related to the fact that I hastily assembled the draft).

USC is eligible for the blogpoll (to the best of my knowledge), but I made a conscious decision to exclude them. If they earn it over the course of the year, I'm not sure whether I'll rank them or not.

As for Oregon, the QB they plug in for Masoli should have at least some experience (Darron Thomas started part of 2007 after Jeremiah Masoli went down, redshirted 2008 and played backup last year, and Nate Costa is a 5th-year senior with some starting experience of his own). Plus, aside from the first game of last year, Chip Kelly's offense has rolled along, regardless of personnel.

I dropped Penn State way down, as I'm as down on them as anyone else coming into the year, but went with the familiar when scrambling to complete the ballot.

As for Alabama not being #1, I'm not a believer in "you stay at the top until you lose." They lost so much on defense, that even returning a running back with a Heisman (that he may or may not have deserved) can't overcome it.

I reserve the right to seriously backtrack on North Carolina if they end up losing players to eligibility problems. As of now, their defense is positively rockin', and as long as the offense doesn't screw everything up, they should be pretty good.

Bumped out Nevada, because their defense has been pretty bad. Still love Colin Kaepernick though. That made room at the end of the ballot for West Virginia.

The rest of the stuff is just minor shuffling. Feel free to comment on this ballot as well, so I can continue refining. Don't take it too seriously, of course, as preseason polls are a futile endeavor.

is that there's a good chance they won't face anyone who finishes in the Top 10 this year. We can all agree that they're at least a very good team, that they'll most likely dominate the vast majority of their opponents, and that things could look different if they played in a strong conference ... but if VT stumbles as they do every season (I have friends who did undergrad and/or grad work there, the only thing they were really thankful for besides Beamer was Al Groh's continued presence at UVa and now even that's gone), you know Boise will end up drawing the weakest BCS opponent possible (cough Big East cough).

I wouldn't be surprised if, given a situation where the Broncos run the regular-season table and the rest of the top teams drop a game here or there, the final regular-season polls magically drop Boise State low enough to keep them out of the We-don't-need-no-stinkin'-names Bowl.

So even in January, all we might know is that Boise State beat the teams they played, but somehow they don't seem as strong as one or two other top teams, and we'll never know how they might have played against one.

I probably still would've put Boise St. at #3, flip flopped Alabama and Florida, and switched Nebraska and Miami, but much better than your hastily drawn up original.

I agree with flopping Bama and FLA.  Especially considering the logic of how much 'Bama lost.  Well, last time I checked, the Gators lost plenty and I'm not just talking about Tebow.

As little as any of us may want to admit it, Ohio State is most definitely good. Rating them lower simply because they're the rival school is foolish and unrealistic; leave that to other sites.

Assuming the last part of your comment is hyperbole, it's still a bit much and probably still inappropriate. People attending that school speak about people like us that way; we need not stoop to their level.

However, if you were making an oblique reference to Awesome Polar Bear Videos, then I support that 100%.

I'm not saying that with their talent they aren't a legit top 10 team, but they lost just as much if not more than Alabama on the defensive side and Alabama brings back a hell of a lot more on offense.  I think Oklahoma might be a questionable #2, but it can be argued.  So Alabama should be at least #3.
