Chaos reigned. Michigan survived.

Indiana did as Indiana does, combining terrible defense with terrifying offense to push the Wolverines to the brink. Jordan Howard ran over, around, and through a shorthanded Michigan defense, gaining 238 yards on 35 carries. With the game in the balance and the ball at the two, however, Kevin Wilson called for a quick pass to Mitchell Paige; Delano Hill swatted the ball away to seal the win.

With Ryan Glasgow's absence disturbingly noticable, the offense and defense switched roles. Michigan couldn't rely on their front seven to slow Howard, while Indiana QB Nate Sudfeld played an efficient, turnover-free game; that was enough to produce 527 yards on 5.7 yards per play.

For the first time this season, however, Michigan could rely on their deep passing game. Jake Rudock and Jehu Chesson were brilliant. Rudock set a school record with six passing touchdowns—the previous record was four—and surpassed the career high he set last week with 440 yards on 46 attempts. He also led the way on the ground with 64 yards on seven carries, picking up timely first downs by breaking free of the pocket. Chesson tied the program record by hauling in four of Rudock's touchdowns, including a leaping grab in traffic to knot the score with two seconds left in regulation, and he set personal bests with ten catches for 207 yards.

It appared Michigan might coast to a comfortable, if not particularly convincing, victory as the Hoosiers traded field goals for Wolverine touchdowns in the first half. Rudock hit Chesson over the top for a 34-yard score on a free play to open the scoring; Michigan would hold leads of 14-6 and 21-9 after Chesson's subsequent first-half TDs before Howard finally broke through for a seven-yard touchdown in the final minute of the half. Even then, Michigan responded, marching 71 yards to the Indiana four before settling for a Kenny Allen field goal as time expired.

Perhaps there was some comfort in a 24-16 lead, but any such feelings were gone almost as soon as the second half began; after knocking Michigan back 15 yards, Indiana closed to within a point on a 51-yard punt return touchdown by Paige, who strung his return out to the right before knifing through a tackle and finding the sideline. After Scott Sypniewski's snap hit the turf, causing a Kenny Allen field goal attempt to fall well short, IU closed the quarter with a Griffin Oakes field goal and an interception of Rudock on one of his few wayward throws.

The tables fully turned in the fourth quarter, when Michigan could muster only a field goal after a 15-play drive and the Hoosiers hit back with a 24-yard Howard TD and subsequent two-point conversion. With 2:52 left, Michigan had to drive 66 yards to avoid an upset that would all but eliminate them from division title contention.

Rudock didn't shy away from the moment, moving the offense down the field in a hurry with two completions to Jake Butt and a 41-yard bomb that Chesson came back for and caught at the two. After some harrowing moments as the Wolverines moved backwards, Chesson high-pointed Rudock's toss to bring Michigan within a point, and Blake O'Neill handled another sketchy snap just well enough for Allen to slip the tying extra point inside the left upright.

Howard continued his dominance in the first overtime, gaining 18 of Indiana's 25 yards and punching in the go-ahead touchdown. It took Michigan all of three plays to not only tie the game, but take the lead; first Rudock hit Butt on a post on the second play of M's first overtime possession, then found Amara Darboh uncovered on the first snap of the second overtime for an easy touchdown.

Three Howard runs quickly set IU up with a third-and-goal from the five, and it seemed certain they would bash ahead once or twice more and extend the game. Instead, Hill stopped Sudfeld short on a zone read keeper, and after Indiana showed pass prior to the next snap, Harbaugh called timeout to set up the final play. Paige motioned across the formation and Sudfeld hit him in rhythm, but Hill's blanket coverage won out.

Michigan survived the chaos and remains alive in the Big Ten race; they can control their own destiny if they beat Penn State and Ohio State takes cares of Michigan State next weekend. After an up-and-down first half of the year, the offense is hitting its stride, albeit with help from the generous Rutgers and Indiana defenses they've faced the last two weeks.

Glasgow's injury looms large, however. Jim Harbaugh announced after the game that the pectoral injury suffered last week will keep Michigan's D-line linchpin out for the season. Michigan faces a pair of top-notch running backs the next to close the regular season in Saquon Barkley and Ezekiel Elliott, to say nothing of the other weapons on Ohio State's offense. The line, the unquestioned strength of the team until this week, now has to stiffen up if the Wolverines want a shot at that ever-elusive Big Ten title.

I tend to agree with your comment. Some people come on here to spout off crap ... But they can't see teams stacking 8 guys in the box to make us throw the football and they can't even spell the names of the players correctly. The thing is Rudock has improved the last couple weeks as teams have moved to stop the run - this opens up space for receivers through the air. At some point, hopefully next week with Penn State, our opponent realizes they need to play defense straight up (like a 4-3 without blitz packages and press coverage) and both the running game and passing game begin to mesh.

this o-line has been near great in pass pro. They pick up blitzes and have been solid in obvious passing downs. The max protection schemes and competent help from the RBs (thank God for Tyrone) have helped them out, but this line deserves credit for getting Jake a lot of time to throw.

That is probably the loudest I have shouted in a long time when we stopped them to win the game!    WOW!   Love the fight this team has.

OK ....

In my opinion, that is the best offense we have faced hands down.  Jordan Howard is no joke.  I know we are down with injuries but the guy was a tough and shifty runner and the QB is a very good QB. I actually think our D did a pretty great job at holding them to so many field goals instead of letting them score TDs.

It was an awesome win and a win that really helps boost overall team moral.  Hard fought and just a tough, tough game.  Glad we came out on top.  This really is a "team" in every sense of the word.  Love it!

That's just it, there will be chaos. Each of the last 3 years, we've said "Michigan is going to get destoryed by OSU". Then, Hoke would make a hell of a game out of it. I trust Harbaugh and home field advantage.

The hardest thing about today's game was how sluggish the defense played. Granted, they were going against a fast-tempo offense, but our ends were non existent all day. No contain. Glasgow is an important piece of this D, but not the all encompassing centerpiece. This was a wake up call all around. They need to get Bolden the fuck outta there

  • Third Indiana drive, Durkin brought in Strobel, Godin and Charlton. Godin and Stobel were getting destroyed from that point on. Durkin couldn't get the right rotations in after that. Poor decision to go with an entire new interior in the roation instead of sub guys here and there.
  • Hurst missed practically all of the 4 quarter. Henry, hasn't really played at the nose much this year, so his play was hit or miss in the second half at that nose.
  • It wasn't the DE's (Wormley) fault for those outside runs. The linebackers, most notably Bolden, wasn't flowing out to the ball. He kept getting caught in the inside wash.

Somewhere Larry Foote is sitting, shaking his head saying "I told you so".

I told my best friend yesterday, "Well at least not having linebackers in 2016 won't be a big deal, because we don't have linebackers currently." Bolden and Morgan are beyond awful.

They are on the verge of Rich Rodriguez type linebacker performances. I cannot believe that Gedeon, McCray, Furbush and/or Gant are worse than Des and Joe.

Gah, the passing game looks good for the last two weeks and the OL looks great but the defense and running back production has slowed down. Hope everyone can get healthy and get it put together when it matters.

Still, hard to complain about being tied for second in the division with two more regular season games and a chance at a B1G title.

You are correct, at least with Indiana. I was just pointing out how it seems this team has played excellent in each phase of the game though at different points this season. Special teams have also been weak lately with the second consecutive game with a return for a score. That was after half a season of great kicking and punting. Some things are coming around nicely and others are weak, and we have not seen the team play a complete game since Northwestern.

When they put it all together, it is a thing of beauty. They need to do that to win the next two games.

Rudock is finally trusting his receivers to make a play. Even got a PI late. This has been lacking for the first 3/4 of the season but is peaking at the right time.

I've seen a lot of people taking shots at the defense. This defense had to adjust to losing their best player (my opinion) and somehow was still able to force three first and tens inside the ten yard line become field goals. In the long run that won this game.

After a season of very satisfying solid tackling, I felt like our D was playing with T-rex arms.  Elliot is going to have a field day if we tackle like that in 2 weeks.  And just to be clear, I will be rooting AGAINST MSU next week, not for OSU.

I kept thinking that Indiana would eventually scrap the 8 and 9-man box routine because of our passing success.  But they just would not do it.  Why be so stubborn?

Hello.  You dared Jake Rudock to beat you through the air.  He beat you through the air, again and again.  Yet you continue to employ the same defensive strategy?

I guess I can't argue with it since they almost won.  But, yeah, I was very frustrated with Indiana.  They refused to respond the way they were expected to respond.

On the other hand, any time we win on the road, I'm a happy camper - no matter who we beat.  I am worried about Penn State next week, but I would be a lot more worried if it was one of those crazy white-out night games.

Gooooooooo Blue!!!!

I get it, passing is highly variant and gaining big chunks of yardage through the air reduces the amount of time the offense is on the field and gives your offense more at bats. When you're cosplaying as professor chaos and general disarray it's in your interest to take out the clock eating low-variance piece of the game by any means available.

Or switch up our scheme. Because I can tell you right now that if we give Godin and Strobel massive PT vs OSU we are going to get slaughtered. I 'd rather see give Charlton PT and move Wormley inside over Godin or Strobel.

Obviously missed our all American defensive lineman. Jake was sensational. Passing attack is coming around in spectacular fashion. Front seven was pushed around all game but played hard. Delano Hill was great after Dymonte went out. Secondary played tough in coverage. Had to make too many tackles. With big Glasgow out might need to go with a three man front to keep the remaining big fellas up front fresh. No fluke Indiana almost took out OSU. With any defense this team would have a few more victories. Go Blue!!!

It was a very risky gambit, but I think the idea yesterday was to keep Durkin in AA and not headed to any of those open HC jobs. Whew! Was risky, but pulled it off! Now hope it works!!

Just a head shaker all night long! Compare our last game-winning goal line stand in the 2nd OT (fantastic!) to our appallingly bad defense trying to defend Indiana's two-point conversion with 2+ minutes left in regulation, where Howard basically walked in untouched straight up the middle...ARGGGHHHH.

To me the team just looks tired. I have a feeling that there's some adjusting to the requirements of playing for Harbaugh going on and guys are starting to get tired and is has to be hard to keep dialing up playing with intensity and EUTM.

I very well could be full of shit, but who among us has kept up the intensity when getting a shock to the system in anything you're doing? That's kind of what I see happening here and I don't think it'll be a yearly issue.

I agree Rabbit, both in a general sense, and more specifically, against IU.

I think it's no secret that the IU offensive style put an incredible amount of pressure on the opposing defense's fitness.  I think the injuries to the DL have really hampered the rotation that they had established at the beginning of the season.  With Mario and Ryan out, guys are playing more, and against IU's tempo, they looked like they were really dragging late.

I am curious whether these last two passing preformances are going to open up the running game some, of if our OL is just that bad.

Before this season, we were all wondering who was going to be a viable second option at WR. As recent as August, the Freep ran an article in which Chesson said that he wasn't expecting an invite back for a fifth year, but hopeful that he'd earn one. Now, we're all counting him amongst our returning stable of talent. Chesson is clearly a player that has benefitted from having a coach that doesn't tire, let alone sleep on a recruits couch.

Harbaugh has stood by the "internal matter" approach on these two. I've heard rumblings about Isaac having issues with the staff last spring. Whether or not that's the case, I can't say for sure, though that seems inevitable for a former five star buried in the depth chart. Whether or not they're hurt is another thing, but if just they're banged up, why not bring them to Bloomington? I expect both of them to transfer. To bad, but in all reality, neither looks particularly viable.
