1. Purdue

starts at 1:00

We begin with a lengthy discussion about Tim Brando and songs with sex appeal. At times Michigan looked like they were going to get run out of the building against Purdue, and yet they were able to get within a point in the 2nd half. Michigan doesn't have a wing with the size to defend a player like Jaden Ivey. Hunter Dickinson's shooting development continues. We may look back at how frustratingly close this game was come tournament time.

2. Nebraska

starts at 22:50

Only 23 minutes for Hunter Dickinson in this game. This game slipped out of hand because he was on the bench for so long (and yet he finished the game with only two fouls). Is this what Michigan is going to look like next year if Hunter Dickinson goes pro? Michigan's three-point shooting is Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde this year. Most of the things that could turn this team around are probably a year away.

3. Hot Takes and Jim Harbaugh

starts at 35:35

Takes hotter than a Hunter Dickinson mid-range jumper. Quarterbacks coach Tom Brady?? Discussions about Jim Harbaugh's interview with the Vikings. It feels like Michigan wasn't able to take full advantage on the recruiting trail with beating Ohio State and winning the Big Ten. Talking a bit about Josh Gattis and his bitter departure. What can Jim Harbaugh do right now to revive the morale within the program after his flirtations with the NFL and losing offensive and defensive coordinators?

4. What's Next?

starts at 53:49

Every time they hire a new coordinator it seems like it's out of left field so is there even much of a point in trying to guess who they hire or promote next? Larry Foote's name is mentioned. Jesse Minter seems somewhat Mike Macdonald-esque. Matt Weiss might be a co-offensive coordinator. Otherwise anyone's guess is as good as anyone else's.

MUSIC:

  • "Push It"--Salt 'n Peppa
  • "Car Radio"--Spoon
  • "Dark Red"--Steve Lacy
  • “Across 110th Street”
THE USUAL LINKS:

"REM has songs that are not about sex. About the Cuyahoga River or whatever."

I'm less worried about breaking in new coordinators than wondering who amongst the players will set the tone for the rest of the group. Hutchinson, Ross, Hawkins, and Haskins brought a lot of leadership and belief, which made the biggest difference. This year it'll be Bell and who exactly???

I would have been fine with Gattis as a one-year/tough spot see if he can do the job situation but he never felt like a good HC candidate long term.  So not having him as a coach in waiting doesn't feel like a loss.

I do agree some momentum was lost but I also think setting up a solid staff and then reinvesting in recruiting should keep it up.  I know people say "oh they'll negatively recruit with him leaving" but they've also been saying "oh Harbaugh is going to be fired" over 2020 and they see numerous coaches bolt jobs.  I think a lot of recruits, especially with the portal, understand they aren't tied to a program if the coach leaves and a guy who is honest about wanting to succeed in the NFL has to be legitimate for some recruits.  So it'll be a barrier but not some insurmountable one

These guys tend to be a little negative most of the time. But Harbaugh is now the designated coach for life. That will bring its own problems and complaints over time if Michigan doesn't win, but for now it's got to look like stability to most people, in this landscape. If Gattis wanted to be an HC, then he was gone sooner or later anyway, with Jim here until retirement. (Most of us didn't possess enough data to know if he was a good fit, anyway.)

Turnover agitates people, and so does uncertainty. But we'll be okay.

Maybe I don't follow coordinator news enough, but I don't recall there being a lot of hype around Gattis winning the Broyles award. It has seemed oddly quiet, both from Michigan and from the national college football press. I do recall hearing some of the plays referred to as Harbaugh/Stanford offense as much as Gattis offense when watching games. Whether true or not, it seems like it was a challenge for Gattis to truly get out of Harbaugh's shadow.

I don't think the Broyles award is a very big award nationally but there was obviously significant chatter around here about it, given that Gattis won. Even still, most of the awards talk about all of Aiden's hardware.

It is odd that he didn't get a HC offer worth leaving. Almost all of the guys that win this award are hired as head coaches immediately after except the Clemson duo in 2016 and 2017 that somehow stayed for a few more years but both took P5 head coach jobs this year.

Yes, I agree.  I'm personally get the sense that he was responsible for pretty poor offenses in 2019 and 2020 and that the addition of Weiss and a more collaborative approach made it pretty good last year such that him leaving is potentially only a recruiting loss.  In fact, I think our offensive structure and playcalling might be better without him.

That said, young coach with impressive pedigree and an award that almost guarantees a better opportunity.  I think he could be a better head coach than a coordinator because of his recruiting chops.

I feel compelled to chime in on a few comments that I don't quite agree with.

Livers was never going to guard Ivey and while he would have fared better than Houstan, that's not saying much.  Livers and Ivey are different levels of athletic.  Franz and sometimes Chaundee sure.  Brown wasn't quite the defender MGoBlog makes him out to be, but he was aggressive, physical, and better than anyone we have now for that assignment. I would have loved to see Franz or Matthews shut him down.

Then there's Diabate. I agree that when the mental part of the game catches up to the physical he will be a good defender....but I no longer think he will be elite. I havent seen the elite lateral quickness much and I have been surprised by his modest vertical athleticism.  He's the best we have, but I was expecting dynamic.  He got blown by standing still against Ivey but worse he also did by Nebraska's Tominaga!!

Finally, I would expand MattDs criticism of our backcourt athleticism and expand it to the entire roster.  Frankie is the only guy who stands out athletically and he's 6-ft tall.  Diabate may get there if he isn't stuck as a tweener.  That's it.
