Indiana 62, Michigan 61 Comment Count

An excellent college basketball game that Michigan led most of the way turned into a nightmare tonight, as the familiar late-game gaffe script bit the Wolverines and robbed them of a potentially season-altering win at home against Indiana. A back-and-forth affair for most of the second half, Michigan took a 61-58 lead off a Hunter Dickinson basket with 5:12 remaining and then would not score a single point the rest of the way. Their defense held Indiana in check, but the clunker ending on offense was enough to doom Wolverines and deny them their fourth straight win. A new day, same old story.

Michigan started hot to open the game, seamless offense with points being chipped in from everywhere and they held a 21-14 lead when Hunter Dickinson picked up his second foul with 12:08 remaining in the first half, a crucial swing moment in the game. Tarris Reed Jr. came on and did an admirable job tussling with Trayce Jackson-Davis and Michigan retained a 28-21 lead when Dickinson returned, but his defense would not be as effective as it was previously, unable to apply the same level of defensive pressure as earlier.

Still, the home team held a lead for much of the half and a lot of it was due to the brilliance of Kobe Bufkin, who was slashing into the paint and finishing at the rack with ruthless efficiency, in addition to outside shooting. Bufkin scored a team-high 14 points in the first half, 5/6 from the floor and 2/2 from three, taking charge of the offense for a Michigan unit that scored 37 in the opening frame. The defense held strong for much of the half but started to come unglued in the later stages, struggling in the pick-and-roll once Jalen Hood-Schifino was re-inserted into the game. Indiana finished strong to close out the half, scoring the half's final four points and trailed just four, 37-33, at the break.

Indiana came out hot from the locker room, using an abbreviated 7-2 run to give themselves their first lead since the early stages of the contest, 40-39. Michigan came right back, answering with a 10-2 run of their own, using a Dickinson and-one, a three from Jett Howard, and then it was capped off by a Joey Baker layup, forcing Mike Woodson to call a timeout. Michigan led 49-42 at that point, but the main storyline was defense, as it had taken each team seven minutes to score roughly ten points each, foreshadowing the rock fight it was going to be the rest of the way.

The game marched along, with the two teams battling tight, Michigan leaning increasingly on their big man for offense while Indiana was looking at TJD and Hood-Schifino as their two engines. A 6-0 IU run forced a Michigan timeout and only a few moments later, the Hoosiers had the lead back, 54-53. A Tarris Reed and-one wrested the lead back for the Maize & Blue and as the clock ticked down towards five minutes, it was the home team with their natural advantage. That leads us to the basket noted in the opening, a Dickinson layup with 5:12 remaining to put Michigan ahead 61-58.

Little did we know at the time, that would be it for the Michigan offense. The defense continued to do its job, holding Indiana scoreless until the under-4 media timeout was over with, and it wouldn't be until there was 2:58 left that the Hoosiers snatched the final lead, 62-61. That came on a pair of free throws from Hood-Schifino. On the next Michigan possession, Bufkin drove to the lane and had an open opportunity at the basket, but his shot clanged off the iron. Michigan forced a turnover on the ensuing possession, but TJD swatted Dug McDaniel on an arcing layup that was awfully close to a goaltend.

Malik Reneau traveled on the next possession for Indiana, continuing to give Michigan opportunities to win the game, but the Wolverine offense continued to decline those opportunities. Michigan had Dickinson isolated on a smaller defender but Terrance Williams II flubbed the entry pass, throwing it directly to the Hoosier. Michigan's defense just kept standing strong, with a great possession forcing a miss, but Jett Howard's shot was not even close. Indiana rebounded it down with roughly 37 seconds to play and opted to play defense rather than foul.

With <15 seconds left in the game, Jackson-Davis got it in the paint and Dickinson had positioning but then strangely attempted a reach-in, which was hit with a foul. TJD missed the front-end of the one-and-one, though, Michigan rebounded it down, and called timeout once the ball was across half-court. Out of the timeout, with eight seconds left, the Wolverines passed the ball around with no success, eventually winding up in the hands of Jett Howard, who jacked up an off-balance three at the horn that was off the mark. Final score: 62-61.

Indiana won because Michigan finished 0/7 and 1/10 from the field. They didn't score in over five minutes and no matter how strong their defensive compete was late, it wasn't going to get it done when the offense disappears. Dickinson missed shots in tight, the Wolverines couldn't scheme up open looks from the perimeter, and McDaniel and Bufkin both either had a shot blocked or missed a shot inside. Bufkin, for his brilliance in the first half, was scoreless (0/4 FG) in the second half. Williams and McDaniel were non-factors, leaving the load to fall on Dickinson and Jett Howard, and neither were sharp enough late. Meanwhile for Indiana, Hood-Schifino and Jackson-Davis combined for 49 of Indiana's 62. It's not the easiest to win a game with just two players but tonight they could.

More than anything, it's a missed opportunity to finish off a big win. Just as it was against Virginia. And at Iowa. Michigan Basketball was presented a chance to flip the script, change the narrative late in games, but the clutch gene continues to evade the team. Shooting stats, turnovers, and offensive rebounds were nearly even between the teams, but one team made one more basket when it mattered. That team was not Michigan yet again, and that's why the Wolverines are unlikely to make the NCAA Tournament at this juncture. Not much more can be said than that.

Michigan now heads out on the road to play Wisconsin this Tuesday night in Madison. That game is scheduled for 9:00 PM EST and is scheduled to be broadcast on ESPN2.

Williams being -11 while Reed was -3 and a nicer stat sheet is telling.

Again, UM is so close to being a decent team, and on any given night they can compete with basically anyone.  But they are profoundly inconsistent and it's just a waste of a season as a result.

I went back all the way to the first Minnesota game and the amount of - games T Will has is staggering. Apparently their staff are not analytics guys! Nobody is asking him to not play at all or perhaps he can even start but Reed, Baker and Cheddar should all be eating into his minutes depending on the game flow.

The rotations should be Dug, Kobe, Jett and Baker using 120 minutes for the 1-3, and Hunter and Tarris taking the 40 at the 5. At this point, I’m ready for Tschetter, Reed and Jace to gobble up the 40 minutes at the 4. If TWill isn’t going to rebound, he brings very little to the table. In 21 minutes, he had 4 turnovers and 3 rebounds. That’s a net -1 possession generated.

I’m ok with T Will getting about 8-10 minutes a game. He would be better suited for those type of spot minutes. The minutes should go to Baker and Cheddar mostly. Jace is a liability too. I really thought YoYo would’ve played more this year, he played against grown men in Europe.

Yeah, unfortunately he's just not particularly good. And if he's not producing, he shouldn't be getting all those minutes.  I hate to say it but he's Brandon Johns-level disappointing this year. Some of the other guys are really improving but Williams doesn't seem to be. Amazing to see how many minuses are attached to the starters in that box score and he was -11.  I mean, yikes. He has some ability but basically this is his ceiling and they have to find the right role for him.

I will defend the staff a bit in that especially early on Reed couldn't stay on the court due to foul issues and general fitness.  He's picked up 47 fouls in 283 minutes all year, a rate of a foul per 6 minutes.  Williams has 45 fouls in 700 minutes, by comparison.  So I do get why you really couldn't play him all that much.  But at this point 20 minutes of Reed is worth enough that he should swap roles with Williams, who's better as a bench guy anyway.

Here’s what is frustrating about this team. If just Diabate stays, the whole season is different. T Will comes off the bench, Reed plays more two big minutes because they have a rotation. Next year, you watch, Jett and or Hunter will leave and we will be back to cardiac games again. We can’t keep the pieces together like in football to make the run while the younger players get the minutes they need to be better. Right back to square one next year.

It's college basketball. There's always going to be more turnover than football. 2 guys leaving though doesn't mean Michigan would be back to square one. We should have a returning PG for the first time in years. Jett is really good offensively but a defensive liability. I definitely want Hunter back, but I also don't think it's a total disaster for him to go. I like Reed's game. He has way more potential defensively.

I’d have to completely disagree here. Losing Hunter and Jett would not make for a very good year next year. Think about it, your starting five would be Reed, T Will, Kobe, Dug and ? Cheddar or Khayat? You are also losing Baker too which has been one of our most consistent outside shooters. I really don’t think you are gonna get anyone better in the portal than a senior HD and a Soph Jett. Jett can work on his defense, driving ability and pull up jumpers to go with his three ball. We also need another point guard as well. The roster is completely messed up right now

This doesn't make sense. You're arguing how next year's team can't be better than this year's team because of a hypothetical additional year from HD and Jett that we aren't getting now. I assume Llewelyn will be back. And why can't we get someone good from the portal? We got Baker this year. Why not another Baker next year? We were supposed to get Terrence Shannon.

Dug, T Will, Kobe, Llewelyn, Reed. That's 4 guys who started a lot already this year. 3 of whom are very young.

Least surprising result ever.  At least this ends any false hope of actually making the tourney.  This team has so many flaws, not the least of which is T Will being anything more than the 9th man.

The roster construction is bad and looks like it will be even worse next year. Lean times.

Big Ten Tournament auto-bid or bust.

Has that ever happened, where a surprise Big Ten team won the BTT and got the auto-bid that got them into the dance when they would have been left out otherwise?

The previous losses didn't bother me too much but this one really did. I thought they were really turning it around. They were up 9-10 points for most of the first half and had a few chances to blow it open but didn't. And when they couldn't pull away in the second, I knew they were going to get sniped in the end. And that's exactly what happened. So deeply disappointing.

I've said all season that this is not a bad team at all and their record is not indicative of how good they are. I still believe that. But they also can't stop beating themselves. They're a good team that just can't win games. Probably not a stranger team in Division 1.

I was hoping for a late season run and a sneak into the tournament. But that's not possible now. They just flat out blew it today. Such a bummer that we'll have a March with no Michigan for the first time in a while.

I've said all season that this is not a bad team at all and their record is not indicative of how good they are.

I have felt this way too, but at some point it's like they say: You are what your record says you are.

If they are that good they would not keep losing in the last minute over and over.  Actual good teams win at least some of those.  They certainly don't lose all of them.

I had this fantasy in my head that the Tournament committee would look at how Michigan lost all those really really close games to top teams over and over, and see that as a reason to put them in.  But now I realize that the Tournament committee will see that as a reason not to put them in.

I was pretty amazed to read the entire column and not hear a single mention of TW. The commenters got it right. That is the first time i have ever said that - sometimes these comments can get poisonous.

Anyway, it was obvious to those of us in the arena that TW was an anchor all night. And yet, at the 512 mark, he got inserted back into the game. No surprise that is when the O went on hiatus. By the time JH finally pulled him out - after his ridiculous Turn over; not to mention when he clogged the lane and cost HD a layup - it was too late.

Has there been a worse M starter in the last 10 years? Donnal in Freshman MO’s year maybe?

As far as next year - what do you think this team looks like if Both Kobe and Jett leave (Jett is projected top 15, and Kobe has looked like the baby Caris he was projected to be lately). Ive been watching Jett all season at home games, and his body language screams that he doesnt like being coached by Dad. Realistically, what 18-19yo likes to listen to their dad give them pointers? I can tell you from experience - none of them!

I know people keep thinking Bufkin is leaving but I'd be surprised if he scratched the first round and he's so young that another year in college isn't going to hurt him as much in the eye of the NBA.  Like, Bufkin is barely 19 right now and he's be 20 when he'd declare for the draft following next year; by comparison Caleb Houstan just turned 20 and Diabate is 21.  So the rush to the league might not be as great.

A worse M starter?

I don't know about the last 10 years, but TWill makes me think of Anthony Wright - who also never saw a shot he wasn't salivating to take (and miss badly). That said, Wright wasn't the albatross that TWill is. Williams is lazy on defense, rebounds worse than our diminutive PG and thinks he's Kobe (Bryant) with the rock in his hands. I hate to rip on a young athlete, especially where he could be a plus player by simply playing hard and letting others create offense, but dude...Lazy plays, dumb plays, selfish plays - he has killed us this season. I bet we'd have 3-4 more wins if his minutes had been split between (anyone and anyone, even a student trainer) on the team.

I’m gonna be honest. This was the first game I’ve caught all year, but it’s apparent this isn’t a good team. Offense has to go through the post or we have shaky options at best. And the coaching seems to lack any credible strategy to deal with our inefficiencies. For example, following the last timeout Juwan draws up a Bufkin drive?! Then that leads to a desperation 3 by Jett as time expires. I miss the Beilein days when regardless of talent, you could see a well coached team that had a system and identity. Next year will be very important for Howard to show some progress.

This team can't buy a break it seems it...

Signs of growth for sure, but still flaws coming out at the worse time...games like this show the importance of little details throughout the game.... a blown assignment, a missed layup, a missed goal tend call, a turnover, a bad pass... Any single thing could have changed the outcome

Super frustrating to watch, but undoubtedly its gotta be tougher in that locker room for those kids.

The irony here was that, when Juwan Howard was being interviewed at the end of the first half, if I’m remembering correctly, he said the team just needed to focus on defense, and the offense would take care of itself.

Well, we saw how that worked out. Great defense in the last five minutes of the game, but no offense.

No matter how well we defend, there’s no substitute for actually getting the ball to go into the basket — something this team seems to be stupendously bad at for significant stretches of playing time.
