[Seth Trimble]

Hoops Recruiting Has Movement At The Guard Spot Comment Count

Matt EM May 13th, 2021 at 2:20 PM

The Wolverines are intent on landing a lead-guard type for the 2022 class with Devante Jones and Zeb Jackson the only potential upperclassmen guards on the current roster a year from now. Jones may have professional aspirations and attrition in contemporary basketball is the expectation rather than the exception.

While Michigan had their focus on a small group of guards over the last year, things have picked up recently as the travel-ball season kicks off and new names are added to the board.

Definitely, Maybe?

Juwan Howard extended an offer to 4-star guard Seth Trimble earlier this week and it certainly sounds as if this is an opportunity that he coveted for quite some time based on his comments to 247 on Tuesday.

"It felt shocking. I couldn’t really do much but put a huge smile on my face and thank them for the opportunity. We were basically just finishing up a conversation, you know? Talking about what he liked most about my game and whatnot. Then (the offer) just came like that."

Things are heating up quickly with the Milwaukee-area native, as he locked in an official visit to Ann Arbor during the second week of June per the same article cited above. Though 247 message board chatter says Seth will re-schedule the OV to ensure numerous family members can also make the trip. Bringing in multiple family members for a visit generally bodes well and speaks to a certain level of interest in the host-school.

Trimble is the brother of former UNC wing JP Tokoto. While the Tar Heels have yet to offer, things could get interesting if Hubert Davis decides to ramp up his pursuit. In any event, it feels as if Michigan has pole position right now and it wouldn't at all be surprising to see Seth pledge to the good guys shortly after his June visit.

He's currently undervalued by the mainstreams coming in just outside the top 100. Having viewed him live for several games in Louisville recently, Trimble had the look of a top 50-60 prospect. Interest from college coaches seems to align with my assessment. Illinois, Marquette, Purdue, Iowa, Indiana and Penn State have all extended offers since April.

He's definitely a good athlete with some vertical pop as a leaper and superior strength/core balance in a college ready frame. He's got a solid handle with some ability to change direction with a live dribble while being a plus shooter with good mechanics. There are some questions though, as Seth is around 6'2 and might not be a true point guard. It was difficult to evaluate his ability to playmake for others in my live viewing, as the vast majority of his possessions were isolation situations 35-40 feet from the basket with no set actions. While he did show some flashes of shot-creation for others, there was definitely more of a scoring-guard vibe. Again though, the context here made it challenging to get a true assessment in that regard. That said, I'd probably lean undersized SG based on that live viewing.

On-Ball Jett Howard?

The most recent film on 4-star Jett Howard in tandem with my live viewing earlier this Spring in Atlanta has pushed him to guard status for your author rather than a wing. Mostly a catch-and-shoot type that occasionally attacked closeouts at IMG during the HS season, I've seen enough flashes of on-ball shot creation to comfortably project him being a 2/3 rather than a 3/4 at Michigan. Additionally, I have it on solid authority that Juwan Howard does indeed plan to utilize Jett in some capacity as an on-ball type.

In what is undoubtedly a sign of things to come in Ann Arbor, Jett says Papa Howard had some choice words concerning his play in Texas over the weekend. While the younger Howard continues to say he's open to all schools per the linked interview above, he is the biggest lock for the 2022 class.

Probably Not Happening

Once thought to be the future PG in Ann Arbor, top-70 guard Dug McDaniel seems to be trending elsewhere. McDaniel did schedule an OV for the first week of June per Rivals, but Trimble scheduling a visit one week later with a good portion of his family seems to indicate the staff may have him higher on their board at this point. It will be interesting to see if Dug makes his way to Ann Arbor considering the context here. In any event, I continue to hear Florida is the favorite right now.

5-star guard Jaden Bradley has been the Plan A option at the lead guard spot for some time, but a few months back there was a lot of smoke pointing to an imminent commitment to Kentucky that never happened. Last week I reported that Bradley was in no rush to make a college decision and the pro-option was gaining steam as potential option.

Bradley says he's working to set up visits, but no mention of Michigan in his most recent interview with 247 earlier this week. Again, Jaden doesn't appear to be in any rush with is recruitment, which could possibly support the thought that he's weighing out the viability of the professional option.

I keep forgetting Roy Williams is retired, too! Same UNC regime with Hubert Davis so UNC could still obviously be a factor if they offer Trimble soon.

I'm not super worried about Seth Trimble's lack of playmaking for others at this point. Between having Frankie Collins as a true lead guard and Bufkin, Jackson, then Trimble as combo guards, I'm not super worried about at least 1 of those 3 being able to create for others. Having 3 CGs who are between 6'2" - 6"6" seems like a good problem to have. Then we'll have Jett who is another potential on-ball option and we definitely won't be lacking in that area

So if I'm following your timeline, Davante will leave after '21-'22, during which season Frankie will have gotten his feet wet as backup PG.

Then in '22-'23 we run Frankie as lead guard, filling in the rest of the guard rotation with Combo types, including Jett.

And we wouldn't bring in another true 1 until '23,  when Collins has already potentially moved on?

So in '23 who's the lead guard if he does? I think we need a 1 in the '22 class, and hopefully Trimble fits the mold... if not they can get another Smith/Jones type transfer I guess ?‍♂️

He may move on after just the 2 seasons, but I don't see that happening. Frankie is good, and going to be really really good for this program. I am not sure he has the physical traits to see himself take off early, being 6-0 and 180. He is really good and will be like a mix of Zavier and Mike Smith, but leaving after 2 seasons I don't think is something we have to worry too much about.

I would be surprised if Frankie is gone after 2 seasons. That doesn't seem like the most likely scenario. If it does we would have to dip into the portal, or recruit a top 10 stud. Either way would work. We'd also have Trimble who could play some PG in the vein of Brooks. That was my point. A guy like Dug could never be on the court with Frankie so having them both on the team in back to back classes would be limiting unless Frankie left after 2 years as you mentioned.

Yeah, with current roster turnover and the way Juwan is recruiting, you almost have to bring in at minimum a guy that can play point even if not a pure point, a wing and a big every year.  And with his classes likely going up to 4 or 5 guys, he'll usually end up recruiting every position, every year.

I'm heavily bias in favor of Rozier, as he attends my annual camps and comes from a great family. So I may not be the best source to speak on him, but his playmaking ability is outstanding.

Michigan is becoming Duke/UK like in that we no longer need to get in on recruitments early to win out at the end. We can swoop in late and get McD AA types because Juwan Howard is Juwan Howard and we're an "It school" these days. Things have definitely changed since the Beilein era in that regard. That said, I don't McKinney will get an offer any time soon based on how things are going right now.

Matt - really enjoy your basketball recruiting updates and your analysis, particularly that you don't always align with the services.

Would love to see a post (or series of posts) on some instances where your evaluations were right and the services were wrong and vice versa.

Its a difficult question to answer without having a standard to guide. Is right/wrong based on college success exclusively? Are we talking 4 year college careers or instant-impact types exclusively?

Off the top of my head, my biggest blunder may have been Dillon Brooks. I wasn't fond of his game at all as a HS prospect, and now he's a damn good rotation player in the NBA.

My biggest evaluation victories are probably Tyrese Haliburton, Jaden McDaniels and Talen Horton-Tucker. I projected Haliburton with first rd pick potential (mainstreams literally had him as a generic 3star) and that's precisely what happened. I had Horton-Tucker as a top 50 prospect when mainstreams had him in the 125-150 range. Now he's a legit third guard for the defending champion Lakers. I had McDaniels as my #1 overall prospect when mainstreams had him in the 60s.

For the 21' cycle Jaden Akins is a kid that I've been calling a top 50 talent for 2+ years. He flew under the radar up until the last 6 months, but he's settling in almost exactly at that top 50 range.

Even as a Michigan fan, I think Akins might be underrated at his current ~#50 ranking. I really don't think there's another lead guard in the country that combines his size, athleticism, 3 level scoring, playmaking, and two way potential. For rivalry's sake, I hope I'm wrong lol

Thanks Matt.

Really happy that Trimble got his offer... now I guess we'll just have to wait it out.

What are the chances, in your opinion, that he commits during the visit?

I know his family is friendly with Jordan Poole and his family and they have been positive in their view of the Michigan basketball program, so that doesn't hurt

In my viewing, any questions about Seth having the ability to be an outstanding PG are silly. Tapes don't show everything but they don't lie about what they do show either. Watch is eyes, his head-his vision is taking in the whole court. But most impressively is the ease and deftness with which he goes left while retaining that vision. The combination of quickness and power and the ability to score at all levels is special.

Seth and Jett would make a most dynamic guard duo for the next class-continuing to move toward flexible, position-less, interchangeable basketball where everyone can do everything. As far as what I have seen, here, Jaden Bradley is the only prospect that is, clearly, a higher ceiling take at this position.

Jett's stroke is so nice, it always looks effortless. I noticed that his lower half rotates a bit when he rises up, but surprisingly doesn't seem to take away from his accuracy at all. Regardless, this kid is ready to play wherever on the floor and I love that all he talks about is being able to be himself and be about a team. Kid definitely strikes me as Juwan's child

FWIW it looks like the Wisconsin guy for 247 CB'd Trimble to Michigan yesterday with a confidence of 6 (he's only clocking a 70% hit rate though...)
