Hoops Recruiting, The First Look: 2023 Wings Comment Count

Matt EM July 1st, 2021 at 2:45 PM

It seems a bit early to discuss 2023 recruiting, as we're still not fully up to speed for 2022 in light of the health crisis. But, June 15th is the annual date on which juniors-to-be can be contacted directly by college coaches. And with that we have some early insight as to which prospects Juwan Howard and staff are giving serious looks to. Let's run through the early candidates by position with my initial pecking order at each. Guards here

**Caveat - I have yet to see some of these prospects live, and so my evaluation may not be fully informed. I will reflect this where applicable.**

Wings

1) Javonte "J.J." Taylor

Measurements: 6'8/190

School/AAU: Kenwood Academy (IL)/Mac Irvin Fire (Nike EYBL-Chicago)

Short Evaluation: Prototype/NBA positional size/length. Outstanding shooter when feet are set. Can create off the dribble and has solid vision. Good athlete but not necessarily a quick-twitch type. Makes the game look extremely easy at times. Will undoubtedly be playing professional basketball within the next three years. Top-10 prospect to mainstreams and I agree.

Recruitment: Michigan offered him when the direct contact period commenced and watched him during the live evaluation period last weekend. This is the type of prospect that generally lands at Kentucky and the Wolverines would likely have no chance here but for Juwan Howard's heavy connections to Chicago and specifically the Mac Irvin Fire. There is definitely a chance Taylor goes the professional route, but Michigan will be in the thick of things here if college is the option.

2) Omaha Biliew

Measurements: 6'8/210

School/AAU: Montverde Academy (IL)/Mokan Elite (Nike EYBL-Kansas City)

Short Evaluation: Haven't seen him play live, but definitely appears to have the highest floor of this entire group. Will be an instant-impact college player should he go that route. College ready frame, three-level scoring ability. Can handle the ball a bit. May not necessarily have the ceiling that Taylor/Evans possess, but he's a walking mismatch at the college level that can play up to three different positions on offense while being a good rebounder. Would be my preferred choice without question. Top-5 prospect to mainstreams and it is very easy to see why.

Recruitment: Michigan offered him..........in May of 2020, but there hasn't been much mention of Michigan recently. Juwan Howard being the ace recruiter he is, will likely find a way to get in the hunt here.

3) Kwame Evans

Measurements: 6'9/190

School/AAU: Montverde Academy (FL)/Team Durant (Nike EYBL/DMV-area)

Short Evaluation: Prototype/NBA positional size/length. Haven't seen him play live, but gives off Tayshaun Prince vibes as a jumbo wing that knocks down perimeter shots off the catch and the bounce while taking advantages of mismatches in the post. Upside off the charts. Will undoubtedly be playing professional basketball within the next three years. Early 5-star to mainstreams and that's hard to argue with given his long-term projection.

Recruitment: Michigan contacted him when the direct contact period commenced. Originally from the DMV, so there are Phil Martelli ties along with the Montverde connection with Juwan Howard/Caleb Houstan. Michigan will likely offer at some point in the near future.

4) Ja'Kobe Walter

School/AAU: McKinney HS (TX)/Team Trae Young (Adidas/Oklahoma)

Short Evaluation: Perimeter shotmaker that is a three-level scorer that generates his own offense off the bounce. Has solid vision as a playmaker. Versatile + skilled enough to be just as good off the ball. Shooting mechanics sort of funky (shot origin too low, no lower body lift). Limited athlete. Projects as a good college player that should be around for multiple years. Mainstreams have him in the 15-50 range which feels right. Essentially a high 4-star that doesn't have ideal size/length/athleticism for the position that NBA GMs love.

Recruitment: Michigan contacted him when the direct contact period commenced. Not much public mention of Michigan lately. Feels like a tier 2 option given the prospects above.

5) John Gamble

School/AAU: Port Charlotte (FL)/Team Breakdown (Under Armour/Miami)

Short Evaluation: Haven't see him play live, but definitely has the look of an explosive athlete that can knock down perimeter shots. Appears to have a high ceiling as a two-way prospect. Haven't seen enough film to confidently project his optimal role/usage in a half-court setting. 247 has him as a top-50 level prospect.

Recruitment: Michigan contacted him when the direct contact period commenced. Nothing public with Michigan since then. Likely a kid the staff watches over the Summer to assess where he stands.

6) Jalen Hooks

Measurements: 6'7/210

School/AAU: Crispus Attucks (IN)/George Hill All Indy (Independent-Indianapolis)

Short Evaluation: Good athlete with college ready frame that thrives in transition. Not really a perimeter shotmaker at this point. More of a second/third option in half-court settings at this stage of development. Capable of handling the ball a bit, but not a playmaker for others. Projects to be a good defender capable of defending SFs/PFs. Mainstreams have him in the 50-75 range and that feels about right.

Recruitment: Michigan contacted him when the direct contact period commenced. With the way Michigan is recruiting these days, this is definitely a case where Michigan will watch him during the Summer and assess where things stand.

7) Curtis Williams

Measurements: 6'5/200

School/AAU: Brother Rice HS (MI)/The Family (Nike EYBL-Detroit)

Short Evaluation: Solid pull-up jumper from both distance and midrange. Had some flashes as a playmaker for others during his sophomore year. Limited athlete. Projects more as off-ball shooter at the college level. Started off as 5-star during freshman year, but hasn't quite lived up to that reputation over the last year. Some coaches at the Chicagoland Summer Showcase live period thought of him as being closer to a mid-major prospect than a 5-star. Mainstreams have dropped him from early 5-star status, but still have him in the 30-60 range. Probably still too high, but still a prospect that will likely end up at the high-major level.

Recruitment: Michigan contacted him when the direct contact period commenced. Staff was a bit disappointed at his sophomore year and development in general. Will see him in July and assess accordingly.

Matt- I greatly enjoy your recruiting posts, so much thanks for them!  I’ve had the opportunity in the Indy area to watch HS basketball the past few years and saw Jalen Hooks most recently last month in the HS summer league.  I don’t have the aptitude to evaluate and rank talent so seeing your assessment of him in the 50-75 range and what I see of him helps me understand talent better.

Question on 2023 recruiting – with COVID lockdowns last year, there were few opportunities to see this year’s juniors until this summer.  Do you anticipate a lot more uncertainty in rankings than prior years until AAU and the Winter season starts?

Matt any word at any of these events about how NIL will affect things? Are the JJ Taylors of the world gonna expect million dollar packages like Oregon supposedly offered Dior Johnson?

I also wonder if scholarships will go by the wayside with NIL. If a player is being offered 6 or even seven figures, I could see a good (sketchy?) coach like Calipari taking them as a walk on and having some local business cover the scholarship. It'll be interesting to see where this all goes.

If you release it and it loves you, it will come back to ... Oh. This is a different kind of release.

But joking (half) aside, we'll see how well this release covers the unfolding situation, or if it comes back to bite us in the ass.

This is probably the sort of pedantic digression that I can get away with only during offseason, but does “prototype” really have an “ideal” connotation? The engineer in me feels the exact opposite. I use the term archetypal in the above context, but I don’t see it as often these days.

Guilty as charged for butchering the English language! Prototype is the generally accepted term in the scouting industry to convey "what the NBA covets at the highest level".

A term that so many in my industry use is the word "feel". As in "he has a great feel for the game". It's generally just a catch-all thrown around for some folks to express their affinity for a given prospect.

My preferred phrase is "spatial awareness".........which means a given prospect sees the floor very well in terms of where he is in relation to the defense and his own teammates, while making decisions to optimize space/give the team an advantage during any given possession.

Dragon child clearly hasn't spent a lick of time in the world of R&D. A prototype is the first iteration of what you how you're product will turn into. Just like mad market product for a prototype to turn into the real thing you don't just have to show you can make it once but time after time to good effects. Not much more different than not just showing you can do something in one game but consistently over time.

MattEM is humble, nonetheless he's correct.

If you haven’t been living under a rock, you’ve seen products I’ve worked on. Part of a large team, sure, but professional operations making household name products.

Prototypes are tested to work out problems in the design. No initial design is ever perfect; to the contrary, they’re often hilariously incomplete as some teams aren’t always on schedule. I remember working on a design where one of the prototype’s components was just a styrofoam block. The engineer hand carved it to figure out how much space he had to work with. My part was the wire harness and it literally had nothing to connect to there.

But the word seems to be used differently in other circles. Former engineer I am, wordsmith I am not. I wasn’t calling for MattEM to seppuku. I probably should’ve just looked it up.

P.S. I grok “spatial awareness” but I could swear there was another phrase for it. . . court vision?

I would be thrilled to have Juwan build a team around Elmarko Jackson and JJ Taylor. JJ is very Durantesque in his movement and build-an exceptional passer. Now, if he develops Kevin's shooting prowess-and he just might!!!

As an evaluator, Elmarko Jackson would be an outstanding pickup (as in he's likely to be a top 25ish prospect). As a Michigan alum, getting Elmarko just feels right. Outstanding young man/family with Maize + Blue in his DNA. Ann Arbor is where he should be. I really hope he ends up at Michigan.

I was so worried when they said they were going to be adding new writers. Instead we have been blessed with an even better basketball analysis experience.

Matt, you should really consider creating your own Michigan basketball centric site at some point. Sorry to the blog, but your writing is some top tier stuff and you have what it takes to be the main writer.

I really do appreciate the kind words from everyone here. It's been nothing short of amazing the way the MGo community has welcomed me. I'm very grateful for that.

But, if I can be half as good as Brian (UFR), Seth (Neck Sharpies) or Ace (his general merging of quantitative info + visual/verbal analysis)..........that means I'm doing a damn good job. I know  we're in a bit of a funk on the gridiron, but those guys are absolutely superb at their jobs regardless of team performance.

Thanks Matt.

love the breakdown that focuses on specific position groups.

A little early for me to get too excited about any 2023 prospect, but good to see Michigan getting in as early as they can with these prospects.

Hoping that Coach Howard's connections in Chicago will continue to bear fruit

Thanks for the breakdown and early look.  No reason to get too attached until the dust starts to settle but it's good to know some names to have a rough idea of the players we are tracking.  Good info as always.

Taylor in particular looks like a guy that could really blow up as him game matures and he adds strength and weight.  In a few years, I could see something like a Franz but with a smoother stroke and a bit more twitch and better handle (hard to tell about the rebounding/defense aspect).  Cue up Fred Jackson?

I have often heard of Coach Howard's connection to Chicago basketball and no doubt it exists. But I am still waiting for Michigan to actually land a recruit, outside of Barnes, who is actually from the Chicago area. I am talking about a highly regarded kid not a late rising lightly recruited player, I'll happily take those if Howard offers. This post should not to be seen as a "we should be doing better recruiting" post, U of M is doing great in that regard. I'm just wondering if the Chicago connection point is oversold a bit.

Addendum: EM you do a fantastic job! MGOBLOG used to be my place for football recruiting news but has become my go to site for basketball too! You have filled a huge void.
