George Rooks Has Committed to Michigan Comment Count

I don’t know what to do with my hands, because Michigan’s about to get one of those big defensive players who fight with them. You know, the ones that go between defensive ends, and try to beat guards and centers, and sometimes weigh as much as them. One of THOSE!

With the staff settled Michigan found itself right back in the thick of the race for the #1 DT on their board, NJ 4* George Rooks III, who didn’t wait long to pull the trigger:

A DT everybody!!! Maybe not one they can play right away, but one they can play eventually! Seriously what do these things at the end of my arms do? This one is a top-250 player to Rivals, which ranks him the #14 SDE, a high three-star and the #30 DT to 247, and the 208th player and #22 DE to ESPN.

At 6’4”/260 the St. Peters Prep product is likely ticketed for 3-tech. The son of the former NY Giants DL kept his recruitment mostly a mystery to the services while considering Penn State, Boston College, Michigan, and his father’s alma mater of Syracuse. Rooks’s sister played basketball at Michigan. Shawn Nua and Sherrone Moore both played a major role in making Rooks feel comfortable following her.

I’ll get the full hello out tomorrow when I am once again capable of interacting with a keyboard. There is no  sdflkasd fuoi';uw FOIUJSAD FIAS AFTER THE jump.]

Are we sure he's a DT?

From the abbreviated post: "At 6’4”/260 the St. Peters Prep product is likely ticketed for 3-tech."

We don't know what the scheme is going to be with a new Defensive Coordinator.

If, as posited on the board, that we switch to a 3-4 or 3-3-5, he may be more suited for Anchor (DE).  Either of those schemes require more BEEF for the DT to hold up inside.  Not saying he couldn't grow into the role, but early playing time is likely with our depth.

He's got an explosive ability to get upfield, and a very nimble sidestep to boot.  It's a shame he can't move diagonally.

We were also looking at his teammate, WR Michael Knights, but that dude can only run out routs.

6’4 260 is borderline for a between the end run stuffer. Throw on some weight after a year in the weight room and ok. Otherwise yeah - DE MLB depending on whatever scheme we end up with.

FWIW - Brian Urlacher’s Playing weight and size as the Bears franchise middle line backer was 6’4” 258lb.

Interesting to find out the fake 40 time for Mr. Hands Rooks... :)

Anything on D with size, strength and speed is good right now. Technique is a plus.

I believe this is also the first time, UM has secured a commitment (freshman, specifically) between the new early period (December) and the traditional late period (February), correct? I have a vague recollection that there might have been one. That's a welcome change.

Key wording-----He was the top DT on Browns board.  I think he is an end in a 3-4.

We now need Diallo for this season, and Innukah for the future.

I'm excited for any help we're getting on defense, excited about this guy's scouting sheet too. Hopefully we get to see some of that development Nua was known for before he came to us, as quick hands was sort of his thing IIRC.
