Future Blue Originals: Joey Velazquez Comment Count

[Nasternak]

Previously: Hello post

I know I’m fortunate to have David willing and able to go all over the Midwest to film games for FBO, but the way things have been going I’m going to have to have one of those quarterback-takes-his-linemen-to-dinner dinners at the end of the season. Not only did he make three consecutive trips to Ohio, but he had to sit through three separate lightning delays. Thanks a lot, Ohio. At least you produce good football players.

Which brings us to Joey Velazquez. The three-star “safety” isn’t really a safety but is very much a Viper, and any player Don Brown wants to play Viper is probably going to have some entertaining film. Velazquez is a blitzy heat-seeking missile with the instincts and speed to blow up a play in the backfield and the motor to chase down anything that might have gotten away. Come for the nine minutes of film, stay for the times no one blocks Velazquez on a well-timed blitz.

Scouting

Velazquez moves with the speed and hits with the violence expected of a Don Brown Viper when given Khaleke-Hudson-vs-Minnesota opportunities, timing his blitzes perfectly from the edge at 00:56 and 8:27, and lining up in the middle and teeing off on a very unfortunate running back at 00:18 in this highlight package (our camera malfunctioned for one play and of course it was a FF TD). At 00:17, 3:12 and 3:20 you can see he understands angles, as he doesn’t sell out speed-wise to get across horizontally at a bad angle, instead anticipating where the runner should be and taking a more diagonal path. Another example of heady play is at 6:25, where he diagnoses quickly (ignore the fake, get to the back on the edge) and with the distraction of a hard-charging lineman. When he misdiagnoses a play he works to the ball, as he does at 6:35. Spins off contact and runs down the play from behind at 7:51, showing very good closing speed. There are examples of good short-area plays all over his film; his closing on running backs when unblocked is really impressive, as seen at 4:50 and 7:18. Start at 8:27 and watch through 8:42 and you’ll see why he’s going to play Viper.

Velazquez didn’t take a block head on very much in this game, instead playing the role of blitzy linebacker who took a hard step forward and rerouted for the ball no matter where it went. He didn’t get stuck on a block at 1:41 or 7:42 and still went for the QB, which is indicative of the effort he showed throughout the game. The first play on the reel shows that he has the athleticism to slip around blocks, and though he may pick the wrong lane at least he has the good sense to try and duck around the blocker to get to the back. He set the edge consistently, and though there were times runs went up the middle I don’t think that’s on him as I figure that he was doing his job on the edge in funneling the back to a teammate who wasn’t there.

Velazquez seems comfortable in coverage, as you can see at 4:15 when he takes a zone drop and flips his hips at the right time to adjust to the movement of the receiver. He disrupts a receiver’s route at 2:10 with a jam that sends the receiver veering off course and leads to an incompletion. His speed picking up receivers in the flat is impressive, as seen in the play at 2:47, which isn’t a huge surprise give his ability to close quickly on running backs.

Summary

Velazquez is athletic and physical, checking the two most important boxes on the Viper checklist. He is at his best when lined up on the edge, particularly when asked to blitz; he can get caught in the wash at times when playing inside. He times blitzes extremely well and drives through ballcarriers.

Velazquez changes direction fluidly in zone coverage and displays very good awareness of where receivers are behind him. He was not asked to carry a back or receiver in man coverage in this game but he was at his best when his assignment was clearly designated presnap, and I don’t think he would have any difficulty with man coverage given that plus his speed.

Showed a solid ability to diagnose running plays, a quick burst to close on them, and the tenacity to run them down when he guessed incorrectly. Running backs did at times pick up big gains through the middle when he was setting a hard edge, but it appeared that he was playing his assignment and funneling the back inside. When he knows where the play is going, has a burst/second gear that erases time and space and makes him ideally suited to playing Viper over either of the interior spots.

So happy to have this guy on board.  I think we’re getting away with felonious robbery with this guy.

There are varying types of robbery charges. Most robbery charges are classified as a class c felony. But assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to rob is a class A felony. For the average person, that could mean up to life in prison. However, if you are a MSU athlete in football or basketball, you are probably looking at either a noise ordinance citation or littering citation for committing robbery of any degree in EL.

He is one of the better prospects in the state of Ohio, but in no way, shape, or form is he a first-round prospect.  That's totally fine, but the idea that he won't suit up for Michigan because of baseball is crazy to me.  Now, I wouldn't be surprised if he wound up sticking with baseball if he couldn't find much playing time on the football team, but that's a different story.

We don't have to worry about the next draft but he's good enough that he might not be a 4/5 year guy if he tears it up for Bakich.

Might be a contributing reason he won't redshirt, but he probably wouldn't anyway given the top two current vipers are gone in '20 and the guys they look for at the position are also lab-designed special teams demons.

Not that I’m a star gazer but it seems like some of our guys are in serious need of a re-rank. Kent has tore it up this year and is still a very low 3. Velasquez seems due for a climb. Charbonnet is still ranked 170 in the composite. Any idea when or if the scouting services will revaluate?

Kent may get a rise in 247 rankings but I doubt he will rise too much in other rankings since ESPN and Rivals rarely go and actually watch games. Velazquez probably won't rise too much since he's a very unique fit. As in he's great for viper but maybe won't work in other defenses. I'd be very surprised if Charbonnet doesn't end up a 5 star. Gray should rise too since his rankings are bafflingly low at ESPN and Rivals. I would also look at DJ Turner and David Ojabo to get a bump if they have good years.

Came to see if this film would change my opinion. It did not. I keep hoping to see something that would indicate this kid has the physical tools to play Viper but I just don't see it.

Moves with speed and hits with power is what was written in the above article and I am completely on the opposite page with both of those things.

Again, I hope I'm missing something here but I see more Desmond Morgan than anything close to Khaleke or Jabrill.

EDIT: He takes a block head on at the 5:06 mark and gets cleared out of the hole, almost allowing a TD. I don't know if I see a spot for this kid on the field at Michigan after further review. I'm sure he's a great kid off the field, my opinions simply address what I'm seeing on film.

EDIT #2: Are you guys even watching the film? I've seen his highlight video from a post a while back and this single game footage. I don't see a ton of effort even. I make no claims of Football specific knowledge over Don Brown, or anyone for that matter. Watch the video and give me 1 play that indicates that what I said is not true. He doesn't stand out in this game at all, against HS competition from an athletic from an athletic standpoint and he doesn't make many plays to get in the stat sheet on here. So what am I missing? Don Brown may have liked him originally but as we've seen over time, coaches can fall out of love with prospects. I'm curious to see where this one goes.

Great, someone here watched the posted video and did not think much of him. Other people, myself included, thought  the tape was non remarkable, and said as much. BUT BUT DON BROWN! Sorry, not everyone is going to make it, and people rated around 1000 are kinda there for a reason. He did not seem to have much speed, athleticism, burst, etc, and was bleh. I know I know, BUT DOWN BROWN. The faith automatically given to all recruits as worthy BECAUSE OF COACH X is overblown. Some actually really aren't that good. BUT RICH ROD!@!

Ohio State say him in camp, and thought "meh, no thanks". Just a quick reminder, OSU is kind of UM's rival. Holy Cross really liked him though.

Well Bronx, I will assist with you bafflement. I did not come here to locate popular accounts, and I have read this blog for perhaps as long as you. I might have chosen a parody name, but that does not mean it is a parody account. I don't find Faux to be a very agreeable person, but that it is my opinion. Just because some of you stay in your echo chambers, does not mean other people do not have other views - though I did like the old site better.

I likewise do not find much redeemable in Salvatore's posts, and his attacking another poster with the same tired response along the lines of YOUR NOT A MICHIGAN COACH YOU NEED TO SHUT UP was annoying, especially since I thought the same after watching the underwhelming tape.

So your assumptions are wrong. I have always mainly come for Brian's writing. I also used to visit more when the recruiting updates and scouting were better.

I am also a bit of a star gazer as this blog likes to begrudge people like me who think the parade of unknown 3 stars is not a way to get back on track.

Sorry to not be a much of as a fan of some of your "popular" posters as you are.

So despite apparently being a reader of this blog for nearly a decade, you decided today was the day you had to create an account, pick as your avatar one monkey grabbing the ass of another, and comment only on a current commit whose video you find underwhelming, while basically copy-pasting the same tired complaints and half-ass ramblings other trolls post constantly.  But oh yeah, you mentioned echo chamber, so you have to be a "real" user because your speaking against the rest.

Anyway, try harder next time.

I don't man, when do most people make accounts? Did you automatically sign up your 1st day? I don't recall the terrible best and worst diaries when I was 1st here, and certainly not on your sign up date. I was glad to read that you would stop doing them soon, but then again the diary section has been far less informative than the normal message board. Most are not even quarter ass ramblings, and yours are just an ass rambling.

If those are tiring complaints to you, it is only because they get repeated so often, because for years in been the same crap. Koolaid drinkers are cool, and even one else are cesspool dwellers to you. I like the program just as much as you do, but the shortcomings, mainly thru coaching and recruiting have really translated on the field for a long long time.

Some of those shortcomings are even mentioned by the site itself. I like to keep my reality goggles on. Carr mailed it in on recruiting the last couple of years, which has been acknowledged. Every one seemed to happy with Rich Rod, then some people started complaining about the all the 3 star midgets. Us trolls would be shot down due wondering why Rich Rod was recruiting like he was still at WVU.

I did actually have an account a loooong time ago, but i soon found it pointless, stopped, and long since have no recollection of the account or email address. I just remembered having because now I remember during the old site days, most comment sections were just a bunch of people trying to reply 1st, then other people reply to stay on top of thread, all making mostly lame jokes (some were good, some hilarious gifs), in a silly rate race for the coveted points.

I have followed this blog long enough for JamieMacs laughable betting guides - there was a time when i bet on sports, and betting against his pick was one of the best money makers.

And again, it is not just his video that is found to be underwhelming -  all of the bigten except mighty indiana found him underwhelming.

So ya, sorry I am not delushionally optimistic about all the coaches do. I don't think it is too much of a stretch to make the same claim that others make in that the recruiting on the whole is falling short.

I won't try harder. If you cannot accept simple premises, why go the extra mile for you?

Never played PS2, played a lot of ball, watched Findlay, Perrysburg, AW, Toledo Central Catholic, Toledo Whitmer, etc. all teams that have or will play Findlay, the opposing team in this video.

Only Central and Whitmer (play in Findlay's league) have multiple D1 Prospects, SF de Sales Toledo has one (Committed to Toledo)

Findlay, the team that he is playing, is hot garbage, he didn't stick out in that video, I drew a conclusion based on teams I have seen that he has played and so on, you just watched the video.

Edit * This may not be the Findlay I am thinking of in the Video though.

first of all, i didn’t reply to you - i replied to spaghettipolicy (unless you guys are the same and i just uncovered another rolldamntide-like conspiracy, which ... maybe).

i don’t know ohio football nearly as well as you do, but you don’t know football nearly as well as don brown.

don’t take this the wrong way but i’m going to side with one of, if not the, best dc in college over some message board poster

I mean, he's simply offering his own opinion after reviewing the provided footage.  He's not claiming to know more or better than Don Brown.  If every recruiting discussion began and ended with deference to the coaches simply because they know more about football, it would be a boring board indeed.

By the way, I really think it's posts like this that give trolls ammo.  Ammo to whine about the board being an echo chamber.  Ammo to claim being persecuted just because they don't agree with everything the coaches do.  Don't give them the ammo.

I agree with Spaghetti.  What are we looking at in the tape that says D1 recruit? And According to his profile this kid is going to be 19 shorty after he gets to UM?  So basically he’s two to three years older than the kids he’s playing against in high school?   That’s odd.

1989 UM GRAD

October 3rd, 2018 at 3:41 PM ^

I can't attest to his skill as a player, but as the parent of a 12th grader, I can tell you that most kids turn 18 in 12th grade.  Which would mean that most of them turn 19 in their freshman year of college.

So, depending on his exact birthday, that would make him just a few months older than most of the kids he's playing against...if not basically the same age as other kids in 12th grade.  Not really odd or any sort of significant advantage.

I’ll get negged too but I’m with you. After a minute I thought the film was of someone else. I saw him eat blocks then toss the OL late, as you mentioned above. I don’t see anything that makes me think he’s the next Khaleke.

It was also annoying to see video of him running around away from the play

I hope I’m wrong.  Although I won’t eat a lemon if Joey becomes an All Conference performer.

Findlay looked pretty good.

Watched Rodas Johnson about half the time. I think he plays both ways...think he got wore down-flat out took some plays off...the kid blocking him was a football player-not nearly as big but a tough kid.

Velasquez gives above average effort.

That every snap film was not pretty.  I had him graded at -4 or -5 before I had to stop halfway through because watching their defense get ripped to shreds was too painful.  The recruiting services were probably right about this kid.  I hope he's a good baseball player.

Yes, I didn't really see much D1A burst or speed, which I recall he had.

Just look at the two plays after he makes the tackle for a loss (which was nice) at :56 -- he doesn't show any particular speed or nose for the football -- the first play the runner goes right by him, and the second one he bites on the small juke and then is lost in the wash as the RB goes for a TD.

Just one video, but I hope there are better videos of him than this one.

While I’ve always felt he looked a little stiff for a Viper position, I think some people are being unduly critical here because they are used to watching highlights vs game reels. I guarantee every prospect will look less impressive with this format (except maybe Fournette).

October 3rd, 2018 at 4:29 PM ^

Either Joey Velazquez needs a better highlight reel editor or MGoBlog 3.0 needs someone other than Adam Schnepp to evaluate that tape of Joey Velazquez.  I’d have to rely on umbig11 and Magnus and others here who’ve got experience evaluating these kinds of tapes for their evaluations, but . . .

To my untrained eye (never played football other than the kind with corner kicks, penalty-kick shootouts and and yellow cards; nearing 70 years old, but wearing eyeglasses as I watched the video), it seemed like there were more instances in that nine and a half minutes of play where Joey Velazquez either was manhandled or missed tackles than there were true “highlights” of his play.

Does any MGoBlogger know what Adam Schnepp’s experience has been in playing or coaching football, scouting football recruits or evaluating the videos of high school football players?  What's his reputation among those who regularly do that work?

I don’t care how many games you have taken in or scouted you still don’t know as much as Don Brown.

It’s all well and good to discuss recruits, but at the end day none of us can hold a candle to coaches when it comes to talent  evaluation.

To be sure there have been some  commits(Taylor, Haskins) who seem to be more glue guys than serious contenders for a position. Maybe that is who this kid is. I don’t know.

HauxMo

October 3rd, 2018 at 5:23 PM ^

Why do you even post? It's a forum, and obviously people are going to express their opinions. Great, we all don't know as much as Don  Brown. Calm down. People are not fond of the 3 star parade and Michigan's horrible recent record against rivals. I know I know, WE ARE  NOT MICHIGAN COACHES AND WE DON'T KNOW SHIT. Oddly though, for those who never were Refs, crappy Refs still can be spotted. Odd.

You think college coaches, and probably other coaches, are infallible due to them being in their position. I don't, most don't. Deal with it.

I see a LB who understands angles and how to time blitzes

but I see a lot more of a linebacker that doesn't shed a single block, doesn't have the speed to cover sideline to sideline or in coverage and gives up on a play once an initial player touches him.
