If you can help out finding articles on any of the commits, e-mail me, and I'll try to include your contribution.

MI QB Devin Gardner

Last week: Inkster beats Warren De La Salle 12-3 in the State Semifinals.gardnerDLS.jpg

"We started 0-2," Gardner said. "It feels great to go back. It's a state championship game."

Last season Inkster lost to East Grand Rapids in the Division 3 title game, 43-24.

Gardner, a 6-foot-4, 200-pound senior who committed to Michigan, had a subpar game, particularly in the first half. He finished with two interceptions, both in the first half, and completed 7 of 16 for 75 yards.

Gardner's 12-yard touchdown run with 1:07 left sealed the victory.

Article 2.

This week: Inkster (9-3) takes on Lowell in the State Championship Game at Ford Field Friday at 1. The game will be televised live on FSN Detroit.

SC QB Conelius Jones

Last week: Pregame fluff. Spartanburg's playoff run continues with a 28-14 win over Sumter. Jones was responsible for al 14 of the Vikings' points:

Jones, a Michigan commitment, completed 9 of 14 passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 100 yards on 17 carries for two more scores.

Quarterback Cornelius Jones went in from seven yards out two plays later for the touchdown with 8:05 left in the first quarter.

The Vikings didn't capitalize on that, but they did capitalize on the eight plays they ran in the second quarter, scoring on two of them on long touchdown passes.

The first was a 61-yarder from Jones to wide open running back Jamiah Fowler on a wheel route — a la Clemson's C.J. Spiller — down the left sideline to make it 14-0 with 8:18 left in the first half.

On Spartanburg's next possession, Jones avoided a couple of would-be sacks and went down the middle of the field to wide receiver Arland Woodruff. He got in behind the Sumter defense and caught the ball in stride for a 75-yard TD pass to make it 21-0 with 5:03 left.

The joy of being back in the game didn't last long. On the third play of the drive, Jones found an opening and went 64 yards for a touchdown to make it 28-14 with 8:15 left.

Article 2.

This week: Spartanburg (5-8) will look to keep the upset train rolling against national #2 Byrnes in the 3rd Round of the State Playoffs.

Fielding a punt at his own 36 yard line, Johnson started up the middle, shook a tackle, shook another tackle, moved left, broke another tackle, went toward the Rummel sideline, shook a final tackle and sprinted 64 yards for a score to give Rummel a 7-0 lead with 11:29 to play in the game.

For Rummel, Johnson had seven tackles, an interception, returned the punt for a score and had four catches for 56 yards.

“Carvin Johnson made a huge play for us and he played great all night. He felt bad about fumbling a punt but made up for it with a huge interception to stop Jesuit. I cannot say enough about him and our defense." [Rummel coach Jay Roth].

Article 2:

"This was about team play, " Johnson, a Michigan commitment, said. "Things looked bad for us and then another player would make a play. Special teams, the offense, they made plays when we needed it. This game was just about making plays."

About his touchdown return and the preceding muff, Johnson said, "The defense picked me up. They wouldn't let me get down on myself. Everybody on the team was picking me up. They said make a play next time."

Johnson did, fielding a 31-yard punt by Jonathan Poole and then breaking threw [uh, sic] Jesuit's first wall of tacklers. He stiff-armed Poole at Jesuit's 46-yard line and then was escorted up Rummel's sideline.

This week: Rummel (12-0) plays Hahnville in Round 3 of the State Playoffs.

I love Gardner (and I'll love him even more when he keeps his commitment to Michigan and leads us to a NC), but I'm from Lowell, so GO RED ARROWS!!

I'm sure it has been posted here somewhere before, but it bears repeating that Carvin Johnson has been given a three-star ranking by Scout. Rivals still has Johnson unranked. (Recall that Johnson was unranked by both sites at the time of his signing earlier this month.)

I said this in the other thread that's on the board about Jones, but it makes a lot more sense when you realize that all four teams left in the state playoffs are from the same conference. The three remaining teams (other than Spartan High) account for four of their eight losses.

It still doesn't really make sense without an explanation of the state's playoff system, because they made the playoffs with a losing record -- something that is extraordinarily unlikely at best here in Michigan. I'm accustomed to seeing losing records in Michigan high school basketball playoffs because everybody makes it -- a system I've always hated -- but there would have to be a bizarre set of circumstances for a losing football team to make the playoffs.

I understand that, that's why I said it makes "a lot more sense" rather than "complete and total sense". I was giving some context without having to reexplain something that had been explained before. Not everyone makes the football playoffs in SC; it's based upon points.

Also, I'm not sure how making the playoffs in Michigan with a losing record is "extraordinarily unlikely" since you have to have five wins to make the playoffs in Michigan (unless they've changed it). What scenario would put someone in the playoffs with a losing record?

Disclaimer - didn't mean to sound like a jerk in this response (if I did).

No worries -- I'm an expert at unintentionally sounding like a jerk, and I don't think you did. I don't mean to sound like a jerk, either; I'm really curious as to how this works.

My understanding of the playoff system in Michigan is that teams can automatically qualify for the playoffs with five wins in an eight-game schedule or six wins in a nine-game schedule, but neither is a floor; if there aren't enough six-win nine-game teams or five-win eight-game teams to fill the set number of spots, they dip lower to fill the remaining spots: my town made the playoffs at 5-4 a few years back because there weren't enough 6-3 teams to fill out the brackets. So while it would take a bizarre set of circumstances to propel a 4-5 team into the playoffs, I'm not sure it's actually prohibited. (If it is prohibited, then it's obvious I haven't paid close enough attention.)

Do you have a link to an explanation of the state's playoff system? I'm curious to see the system, but we probably don't need to litter the comments with more of this.

What leaves me perplexed (which is why I'm curious to see the system explained) is that Michigan uses playoff points to determine seeding, but the points from losses are so minimal as to be nearly irrelevant. That's why I'm having trouble understanding why Spartanburg's losses to very good teams were so important.

I posted a link in the other Jones/Spartanburg thread on the first page of board topics to the SC high school sports manual that discusses the procedure (somewhat). It's the best "official" source that I could find. There is a link to an article that myrtlebeachmaize posted in that same thread that explains it a little better. It definitely weighs losses to good teams much more heavily than Michigan's system does. http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/spartanburg-shocks-sumter-cornelius-jones-do...

Thanks -- I appreciate the info. I still have a hard time wrapping my head around the system, but it's a little bit less mysterious now.

Still, though, I can't say I'm 100% on board with making losses significantly positive. But that's just me.

It doesn't look like Gardner's combined reg season and playoff totals are adding up quite right ... e.g., pick total ytd should be 5, no? Passing TDs 18? and so forth.
