Fall Roster Overanalysis 2020 Comment Count

Seth August 11th, 2020 at 9:33 AM

THE PHONEBOOKS ARE HERE! After an incomplete roster surfaced on Thursday, and an on-the-ball Zach Shaw of 247 managed to pull most of it, MGoBlue.com posted the full rosters Friday night after we were done contenting for the week, and then yesterday was too newsy. Anyway this is all going to stay (completely ir-) relevant so let's have our Moment of Jerk:

The rules: All weight gain is lean muscle as a guy fills out his frame, all weight loss was unnecessary flab, and staying the same means the fat was replaced with more lean.

The program would never lie to make a guy sound move viable than he is.

Freshmen weight gain 2000: The school previously used 247's recruiting weights for their rosters. Those are based on high school fall rosters more often than not. Since I have them all I'm just going to include everybody's weight as a recruit as well (except the 5th year guys, to save columns), because it's interesting.

[Hit THE JUMP for the position-by-position excessively optimistic obsessiveness]

WEIGHT GAIN 3000

QUARTERBACK & RUNNING BACK

Let's skip since they're still mostly reporting the same round numbers. Only thing to note is OL' MURDERFACE is back down to his fullback weight after trying to bulk up to DT last year.

RECEIVER

Nico is down some pounds, and wearing #1.

TIGHT END

Both Erick All and Luke Schoonmaker made big jumps, with Schoon now up to a blocking-viable 252 from his freshman weight of 231. All is on the same path but a year behind and Hibner is starting where they did.

CENTER

A lot of movement, and it's hard to know what most of it means. Presumed starter Zach Carpenter and his primary competition Andrew Vastardis were separated by a pound last year but Carpenter's now close to 330 while Vastardis dropped 23 pounds. Also freshman Reece Atteberry arrived at 304, which is a viable playing weight.

GUARD

Barnhart is expected to start, but I kinda expected him to be more than 301 right now. [Barron]

Not gonna lie, I miss the annual Onwenu portion of this article. That goes double considering one of the guys expected to step into the two open guard jobs is Karsen Barnhart, who didn't budge from the 301 they had him at last year. Ben Bredeson was about this same size his sophomore year, the same size he played at his freshman year. Bredeson circa 2017 did get pushed around some; he hulked up to 320 as a junior and that's when he really started to move people, and when the Pin & Pull stuff took off as a result.

The were three big swings, one relevant to this year. That would be Joel Honigford reversing the drop that had him at just 284 last year. He's now 305, which is barely bigger than Barnhart, but in this case that's a positive sign. The other big swings were at the lower end of the depth chart: Jack Stewart is up to 318 from 291 last year, and incoming freshman Zak Zinter is 34 pounds heavier than the 300 they listed him at, confirming the scouting that he's a biglargehuge person.

TACKLE

Here we find the other Frey-type who was supposed to grow some more and didn't. Ryan Hayes looked like a future lockdown blind side tackle in limited play last year, but also was overwhelmed physically as a redshirt freshman. He's since crested the 300-pound mark but just barely; a three-pound gain is a little disappointing from a Make a Jake Lewan standpoint. Hopefully that's a COVID setback and not Hayes reaching a natural limit. Last year's freshmen continued apace, each gaining 11. And as was recently discussed in his recruiting profile, Jeff Persi, the next Ryan Hayes, arrived already over 300 pounds, a 37-point swing from his well-documented high school transition from tight end. Seth's sleeper-of-the-class pick is looking good so far.

DEFENSIVE TACKLE

Jeter is no longer sub-300 like he was in last year's spring game, but not sure size was his main issue. [Barron]

One of the first bits of information to slip out of the quasi-camp in July was that Donovan Jeter is up to 318, a 28-pound gain from last year, which was an 18-pound drop from the year before that. I'm sure that's meant to placate fans who saw him ejected by Wisconsin last season, but with him the technical issues are what I think we're most focused on. If he can suck up doubles though he's viable, which he wasn't last year.

Jess Speight, who started the Citrus Bowl, was at 302 in his OL days but was 288 last year and about the same this year. A program insider bit I told me Speight the Younger looks different this year so I was expecting more. It stands to reason however that he didn't really have time to reshape his OL body last year, and used the offseason to become more DT-like.

I take Julius Welschof getting up to 286 as a sign he's still on his way, ditto Michael Morris reaching 276, though he's still probably another year away. I'm much more encouraged that build-a-tackle project Kris Jenkins arrived at 265—still 40 pounds under ideal nose tackle weight—rather than the 239 he was listed at until now. Let's go paternal alleles!

DEFENSIVE END

Both of the starting DEs slimmed down some, which if you want to turn into something totally means they're not longer gaining extra to plug B gaps because the team is more confident in the tackles. It probably means exactly nothing except Aidan Hutchinson, at 269, is really more weakside end-shaped than the anchor-like 278 he played at last year. Taylor Upshaw, at 256, is finally in range of playable ends right at the time he was hoped to be.

Luigi Vilain gaining a typical-for-a-sophomore 9 pounds is encouraging because his setbacks really do make him more of sophomore (if the Spartans can all get 6th year waivers for injury years on top of regular redshirts, Vilain's true story should be a slam dunk). Also in encouraging signs from guys with injuries, Braiden McGregor showed up at a playable 260 after losing most of the last 12 months to a nasty season-ender. On the other hand Jaylen Harrell is exactly the 235 he was listed at—the Uche Project is going to begin at linebacker-size after all.

I sorta don't believe Barrett was 227 last year. [Fuller]

There isn't much of note from the top of the depth chart except McGrone is nominally larger than Josh Ross now, which you could take as extremely thin evidence that Cam is indeed going to remain the middle linebacker while Ross reprises his 2018 role of WLB. Charles Thomas joins them in a narrow range of mid-230s, which is Brown's ideal for the position.

Of more interest are the gains by the guys coming in. Kalel Mullings, Osman Savage, and Cornell Wheeler arrived 13, 17, and 11 pounds heavier than advertised, putting all three in the range of plausible playing weight, especially Savage, who at 242 is already the largest guy in the middle linebacker room.

The fourth freshman, Nikhai Hill-Green, is actually five pounds smaller than the 230 he was listed in high school. I've been projecting him more as a SAM, with our expectation was on the thumping end of the Viper-SAM spectrum, i.e. where Ben VanSumeren, at 245, is now. Hill-Green was an early enrollee so he's had a bit of time in the program—perhaps he had to slim down to build back up, or perhaps they're making their vipers more versatile?

The Viper-flavored Vipers are about where you want them. Michael Barrett was already 227 last year so if he rocks up more he would be well within the middle linebacker spectrum. Joey Velazquez is up almost 20 pounds from the 205 in his recruiting profile, which feels like a hit. William Mohan is starting at the same weight Velazquez was last year. The lone exception is Anthony Solomon, who added another 7 to get to 212, but that's still definitely safety-sized and might signal that's as far as he'll go. Against spread teams that's totally fine but if he's going to be an every-down player matching against tight ends and taking on lead blocks 212 seems a mite slim if you don't have the dodge of a Jabrill Peppers.

SAFETY

The existing safeties weren't notable except Quinten Johnson didn't gain much from last year and was still listed as a "DB," which reverses the talk of him moving down to viper, where he was practicing before the injury. Jordan Morant is also coming off of a serious injury and arrived five pounds lighter than the 212 he was listed at as a recruit. If he's ticketed for safety you prefer him to be 207; I want that to be the case instead of a lost offseason. For the record both Khaleke Hudson and Delano Hill arrived at 205; Lano reached 215 by his senior year.

Makari Paige and RJ Moten however both are listed at relatively playable weights. Paige is up 10 from the 182 he was marked as a recruit, but with is length he probably has another 10 to add before he's got the stopping power you want back there. Moten was already 200 as a recruit and is up 13 from that, which matches the take that he arrives already close to fully grown, just so new to safety that he has to spend a year learning it.

CORNERBACK

image

They keep listing Ambry Thomas the same size as David Long for some reason. [Fuller]

The big news is little Andre Seldon ain't 154 pounds little; he's listed at 172, which is playable at nickel and near right-sized for his height at cornerback, if still a good 10-15 pounds under an ideal cornerback. His classmate Darion Green-Warren is 180, but his style is that of a 200-pound Brandon Watson, so I don't know what to make of that; he was seven pounds more in his recruiting profile.

Ambry Thomas played a bit light last year, down a pound from his 2018 weight because of the Colitis. So I don't know what to make of this offseason when apparently he gained…that one pound back. He didn't seem to have any trouble in run support despite being 182 so I guess we don't worry that he's topped out at 183. Vincent Gray is up to 190, which is a normal track. Jalen Perry lost five pounds, which still has him at Ambry-size and might help with the reported speed issues. DJ Turner is a pound under Thomas, which is only notable because he's still not the 165 he was as a recruit; he's my breakout pick this year from the defense, non-Dax edition.

---------------------------------------------

I'll cover the position changes, number changes, freshman numbers, and all that good stuff in another post because in these troubled times™ content is too precious to keep adding to an already-long roster review.

I think the staff ideally wants quicker DTs and that didn't work for Jeter, so they're hoping to make him a space-eater that lets other guys do work. Let's see if that works, in 2021.

I wonder if Vastardis had covid. That'd be a good explanation for losing way more weight than one would expect.

Seth - FYI you put Haskins in twice in the RB section and omitted Corum.

Otherwise looks like EVERY SINGLE PLAYER has improved their body since the Spring as per usual at M - OSU better be scurred.

I saw the massive weight gains and assumed it was due to the weight from Covid lockdown and out of shape, but am enthused that it's not that at all.

I'm sorta surprised Haskins and Charbonnet are the same weight.

Those defensive tackles are going to need to keep growing but at least Jeter is more tackle-shaped.

seldon demonstrating he can put on weight is really positive.  height wasnt his issue (provided he has the requisite athleticism, attitude and instincts as rumored) as much as weight.  weve seen a few smaller corners stagnate around 160 lb for several years which wasnt great so its promising to see seldon make an early move.

any update on mike morris?  didnt see his name
