Glenn may be gone but the hair will live forever [David Wilcomes]

Exit: Gregg Glenn III Comment Count

Michigan Basketball saw another player leave the program via the portal today and this time it is one of the most anonymous, Gregg Glenn III:

[Impact after THE JUMP]

Glenn was a freshman this past season, a four star prospect ranking 124th nationally in the 24/7 composite. Glenn had ties to Jett Howard, which helped in recruiting him to Michigan, and he was described in Matt D's Hello post as a playmaking wing/forward with some shooting questions. The expectation at the time was for Glenn to be a background character in his first couple seasons at Michigan, while he bulked up and refined his shooting and defense, before emerging as a contributor later on in his Michigan career.

Over the course of his freshman season, that expectation was largely correct, though "background character" may be too generous in describing Glenn's minuscule role on the team. The 6'7", 230 lb. forward appeared in just four total games this past season, logging a grand total of eleven minutes. There was never discussion of him even having the slightest shot at a spot in the rotation and on a Michigan team that was rarely in garbage time (good or bad), the opportunities for Glenn to see the court were very limited. His four appearances came in three positive blowouts (Purdue Fort-Wayne, @Minnesota, Maryland) and one negative blowout (Arizona St.). In those games he attempted five field goals (making two), grabbing six rebounds, went 2/4 at the line, swiped three steals, and notched two assists.

Glenn is the third player to exit Michigan via the portal this offseason, joining fellow benchwarmer Isaiah Barnes as well as star Hunter Dickinson. Combined with the NBA Draft departures of Kobe Bufkin, Joey Baker, and Jett Howard, six Michigan players off the 2022-23 roster have now departed in the offseason. With Papa Kante de-committing due to vague academic issues, Michigan now has 11 players on the projected 2023-24 roster, meaning that more portal hunting will be necessary. Glenn's departure doesn't change that bottom line since he was not a contributor, but it does open up another scholarship slot for Juwan Howard to allocate as he talks to players in the portal.

I don't even know what being a fan in college bball is anymore. No roster continuity makes it very hard for my 9 year old to develop any sort of attachment to this team. The same can be said for me. At least he gets some glory years of football for his baseline exposure/fanhood. Beilein whyyyyyyyyyyyy?

Unfortunately, that’s going to be the way of things for the foreseeable future. Most players are going to be gone in one or two years, either to the NBA or the transfer portal. Only a very few tweeners will be good enough to get meaningful minutes for 3-4 years, but not good enough to move on. Pretty much every year, you’re starting from scratch. Team personality and continuity are things of the past.

Is there a reason these guys never play? With as bad as it's looked the last couple years, kids get buried on the bench and end up leaving. Other programs don't seem to have this issue as badly as Michigan.

This is not at all unique to Michigan. There are thousands of players that have been in the transfer portal in the last  few years.

As far as why Glenn in particular didn't play, all I'll say is I've literally never seen someone play more out of control than Glenn in his rare opportunities to play. He wasn't always bad, but he was never in control. It looked so raw that he really needed to be at a different competition level, so this makes sense and good luck to him.

Sheesh.  All but starting from scratch again.  Not unique to the Wolves, but what a mess!  Hope this settles down over time, because it will be hard to stay engaged otherwise.

Between Glenn and Barnes, it is interesting to wonder if the issue was misidentification or poor development. Both were reasonably rated recruits who looked completely out of place in their limited time on the floor. I guess it's probably both, but getting nothing out of two top 100 recruits hurts in the short and long term.

My mind may change by the time the season starts but I’m getting to the point that for the first time in my life I may pay minimal attention to basketball.  And I suffered with and stuck it out through some truly awful seasons.  It just feels like pulling for a bunch of hired guns and not even particularly compelling hired guns.
