Cornell Wheeler Commits To Michigan
[247]
Michigan's fifth 2020 commit is Cornell Wheeler, a *3.5 linebacker out of West Bloomfield. Ron Bellamy is his coach and compares him to a current Wolverine:
"He reminds me a lot of Josh Ross," West Bloomfield head coach Ron Bellamy said. "He is physical, instinctive, loves football and plays the game with aggression."
Early days as far as rankings go for 2020; Wheeler's suite of low-level P5 offers (Mizzou, Kentucky, Minnesota, etc) and local power plus his early commitment probably means he'll stay around where he is unless he blows up at combine or something. Full Hello post tomorrow.

Well I like me some Josh Ross, so this sounds good to me. Welcome aboard. Go Blue!!!!
September 25th, 2018 at 3:29 PM ^
Josh Ross was significantly higher ranked. I think a better comparison is David Reese, which, is ok I guess.
September 25th, 2018 at 3:42 PM ^
You are definitely Maizen. You should hide it better.
September 25th, 2018 at 3:49 PM ^
How can anyone possibly still questions the coaches after all the direct hits on these “lower ranked” players. Unreal.
Edit: especially on defense.
September 25th, 2018 at 4:05 PM ^
What's unreal is how you can draw the false equivalency between me giving my opinion on a player comparison as me questioning the coaches. Even if I was questioning the coaches, which I'm not, is that not OK or something? They aren't infallible they are human beings. They also have a 1-6 record vs our rivals. As for your latter point, I think you can probably count on one hand the number of lower ranked prospects outplaying their recruiting ranking on this team. Everyone else is pretty much who we thought they were coming out of high school. But if you want to believe otherwise that's fine.
September 25th, 2018 at 4:10 PM ^
Boy what a tedious response.
September 25th, 2018 at 4:14 PM ^
I feel like this is the appropriate response to most of the posts around here.
September 25th, 2018 at 5:09 PM ^
Ulizio, Runyan, Perry, Higdon, Gentry, Bush, Metellus, McKeon, Spanellis, Dwumfour, Gill, Mason, Hutchinson, Mayfield and...........
.....RONNIE FUCKIN BELL!
Not to mention Glasgow, Hart, McCurry and Schoenle.
September 25th, 2018 at 7:21 PM ^
Everyone's favorite poster is back just laugh at how absurd this place still is. Ulizio are fucking kidding me? He hasn't been see or heard from since the MSU game in 2017 after he was a debacle against UF. Runyan may have single handily cost UM the ND game. Gentry, Hutchinson, and Mayfield were all top 247 recruits, the latter two which have played all of a whopping three games. Spanellis and Dwumfour are backups, Perry has been surpassed by at least 3 sophomores with higher recruiting profiles and now Oliver Martin is taking some of his snaps. Ronnie Bell, guy has 1 catch in his entire career where the DB literally pushed him open.
I hope this place never changes because this shit is too fucking funny.
September 25th, 2018 at 9:04 PM ^
Sorry cupcake you can't have it both ways; Ulizio and Runyan were 1100+ recruits, they shouldn't have even been in power 5 football according to your precious rankings and now they have both made starts. No matter how bad they play, that IS "outplaying their ranking".
What was Ulizio's record as starter again?
Perry has 64 career catches from the #897 and tied for 2nd most this year.
The fact that you still value ratings more than results is what's F'n LOL HaHA.
September 25th, 2018 at 11:29 PM ^
I'll give some better examples. McKean, metelles, Gil, bush and Hudson were also both ranked as 3*, ben Mason, kwitty paye (I know a backup to this point but has been impressive), Brandon Watson, and finally the best pass pro rb we have Tru wilson.
September 25th, 2018 at 8:38 PM ^
PSA: Shawn is back, everyone.
September 25th, 2018 at 9:36 PM ^
You know NOTHING about this player. A coach who DOES know makes a comparison, and you have the unmitigated gall to claim that you know better than he does. And then this post. How many Michigan football teams did YOU play on, or coach on, that won multiple games against rivals? What gives YOU the right to challenge the coaches because you don't like their record against rivals?
The smugness of your invincible ignorance is at least more amusing than what you posted as Maizen, Mr. I-Just-Joined-Three-Weeks-Ago-But-Talk-Like-I-know-The-Place.
September 25th, 2018 at 10:42 PM ^
Diagonal - you’ve got to learn to keep your opinions to yourself. While indeed you may hold an accurate one, other, level headed, reasonable commenters may agree with you, most will do so quietly. The outspoken, smug self-righteous ones will switch to attack-mode if that opinion does anything but join their circle-jerk UM kumbaya squad, mostly because it makes them feel bigger than they are. These smug pricks are no doubt real gems to behold around their own households and because their families no doubt entirely ignore them, they come here for self-validation.
Dont give them the satisfaction by letting them know their little pathetic tirades got to you.
September 25th, 2018 at 3:54 PM ^
100+ tackle, SEC 4 star LB?
Yeah, I'll take that to go along with the LBs on the current roster.
September 25th, 2018 at 3:55 PM ^
David Reese is good, btw.
September 25th, 2018 at 4:07 PM ^
He is good, but he wouldn't be good enough to start at Michigan right now and that doesn't change the fact our coaches wanted him to play fullback.
September 25th, 2018 at 4:13 PM ^
David Reese might very well be starting where Gil/Ross are rotating.
Michigan initially recruited him as a fullback then he camped and was going to start out at LB. We'll never know where he would have ended up or if he would have started because they wouldn't give him an EE spot and he went elsewhere.
Regardless, a LB recruit approximating David Reese would be a good thing to have on the roster, dude.
September 25th, 2018 at 4:24 PM ^
You have that backwards, UM recruited Reese as a LB initially and asked him to move to FB after he was committed, that's why he flipped to Florida. I kind of doubt he has the speed to be an outside backer in this system but that's just my opinion. He's definitely a good player though.
September 25th, 2018 at 5:22 PM ^
Ugh--clearly no one cares about what you fucking think.
September 25th, 2018 at 11:12 PM ^
Boddicker - nor does “anyone”give a shit about what you think. Try not to be a smug prick. I usually enjoy your comments. As background, I played ball in high school, have followed CFB ever since. I’ve been a rabid UM fan my entire life and am an alum. As such I’m no expert but I do carry an informed opinion. I have very strong opinions at times about recruiting but for the most part I keep them to myself. I’ve lurked here since this blog first started and as such I’ve learned it best to just keep my opinions re: recruits to myself because of the very vocal assholes in here that attack anyone they disagree with, particularly anyone who says anything less than glowing about the high number of 3-stars versus other top programs. I’m 53, a veteran and have been all around the world and have lived in several countries and have a young family to boot so I’m at least marginally self aware and socially adept. This blog should be a place to exchange viewpoints and to share thoughts on the game. Instead, it’s primarily an echo chamber for 15-20 of the most obnoxiously unself-aware pricks that I come in contact with. Nothing Diagonal Blue said was in any way insulting to the coaching or program nor insupportable and in fact he seems to have a attempted a decent job of explaining why he feels the way he does.
Instead of just calmly rebutting if you disagree, shit heads like you switch to insult mode immediately.
If traffic on this blog has dropped since its peak, it’s clear why. There were many more great commenters around here back in the early days that I no longer see here and I don’t blame them for either tuning this place out or just stopping by for a quick scan of headlines and then leaving with no comment.
Sorry to the blog for this rant but after years of watching this shit unfold it pisses me off to see rational commenters attacked and then the tiny band of self-righteous know-it-alls jump in for a swing.
Im pretty sure this comment will be equally ad hominem’ed and insulted for something said so have at it geniuses.
September 25th, 2018 at 5:24 PM ^
Thats not the reason that he flipped that I remember. He wasnt going to get an EE spot here so he flipped.
September 26th, 2018 at 9:24 AM ^
Your memory is correct. Besides, JH let’s guys start at positions wherever they choose - they move them if a different role fits them better.
September 25th, 2018 at 5:28 PM ^
Also this is wrong. Reese wanted to be an EE and there wasn't room here but there was at UF.
He was going to be given the opportunity at LB but FB was the quickest route to the field.
September 25th, 2018 at 4:01 PM ^
So we can add "football players" to the list of things you seem both ill-informed and combative about, joining humidity and it's effect on the human body and a woman's menstrual cycle.

I hope he's excellent and super duper
September 25th, 2018 at 3:32 PM ^
I thought I just read a story complaining about the validity of "ratings" which I've long complained about. It's to sell services and rarely rates players accurately.
September 25th, 2018 at 3:35 PM ^
"Rarely rates players accurately" is untrue. In aggregate, it is a good proxy for a college team's talent level.
September 25th, 2018 at 3:35 PM ^
Well that story would be innaccurate
September 25th, 2018 at 3:44 PM ^
Are you sure you read a story?
Are you sure you DIDN't read a story?
September 25th, 2018 at 4:44 PM ^
It's not that ratings aren't valid they are just woefully incomplete and weighted with geographical bias; there is no way to adequately cover all the high school players so the services cover the ones that are close to their evaluators.
Or they sometimes don't recruit guys who are gonna play another sport ....like Ronnie Bell!
And in that case, their ranking TOTALLY DOESN'T MATTER!
September 25th, 2018 at 3:54 PM ^
Wonder if his father is Keith, who I ran track against in high School
September 25th, 2018 at 5:21 PM ^
I don't think so. Pretty sure his Dad's name is Eighteen.
September 25th, 2018 at 8:41 PM ^
goggles, sadly this comment isn't getting the love it deserves.
September 25th, 2018 at 4:02 PM ^
Welcome aboard!
September 25th, 2018 at 4:05 PM ^
Ron Bellamy? RUBAS?
September 25th, 2018 at 4:11 PM ^
Rivals and 247 have him listed as a 3-star. ESPN didn't have him rated (but I'm sure that they will at some point). I'm not sure how all of that adds up to *3.5. Fuzzy math?
Personally, I don't care what he's rated. I trust the coaches to issue and accept offers as they see fit. I just don't understand the constant need to offer rationales or provide self imposed "boosts". He'll be on campus in two years and we'll find out more after that. Welcome aboard, Cornell!
September 25th, 2018 at 9:09 PM ^
I believe he's calling him a 3.5* because he's ranked 466, not 866 or 1066. The reason there's a need to differentiate is because assholes shit on a kid in his hello post. (See above). No one in this thread has said "his tape reminds me of David Reese" they said "his ranking reminds me of David Reese." Who is a starter at Florida...
September 25th, 2018 at 4:12 PM ^
He joins O'Maury Samuels, Hassan Haskins, and Benjamin St. Juste as a group of people that sound like they could also be a private school with a pipeline to the Ivy Leagues.
September 25th, 2018 at 4:33 PM ^
Welcome Cornell, way to GoBlue!
September 25th, 2018 at 6:43 PM ^
Wheeler? I barely know her!
September 25th, 2018 at 11:03 PM ^
Looks like he brings the wood every play. It's one thing to see some kid get knocked on his ass but when you see the dudes go rolling on tape....yeah, that's a hit not everyone can deliver. Love it. Great get and Go Blue!! Wheeler the dealer of hits.
