Aidan Hutchinson to Return
The Michigan defensive coordinator job just got a little bit more enticing, as senior DE Aidan Hutchinson announced he intends to put off the NFL one last time:
Not quite done yet— I’ve decided to forego the NFL and return for my senior year〽️ #GOBLUE pic.twitter.com/FFtDiKbzgr

This is wonderful news for Michigan, whose defense went off a cliff this season when Hutchinson and fellow star DE Kwity Paye went out with injuries. With Paye off to the NFL, Don Brown's successor only has to replace one All-American defensive end.
That wailing you hear is the lamentations of Big Ten offensive linemen who just discovered they're in for another season of this:
And this:
And [jump]
And that:

Best news for M football in a while....kid's gonna be a stud next year. Stay healthy, Aidan!!
December 28th, 2020 at 6:37 PM ^
It's disturbing that those highlights are all almost sacks.
December 28th, 2020 at 7:58 PM ^
Yeah, if our DBs would jam/delay receivers off the line, maybe opposing QBs wouldn't be able to fire at the first read after a three-step drop.
December 28th, 2020 at 8:54 PM ^
It's just really important for you to be a cunt isn't it?
December 29th, 2020 at 12:41 AM ^
I like Don Brown personally but why is he being what you said he is above for his post? Our DB's were just not very good and it is more of an athletic thing / not being able to get really good DB's. Had we had good CB play like we did with Jourdan Lewis and David Long, etc then Don Brown can run his schemes properly and more sacks happen. Our main glaring issue is the DB's and their play. It's just what it is / was. Possibly with a better DB coach their game could of been elevated but I think it was more about their actual athletic ability not being on par with the WR ability they faced. 1 more second and that would of been sacks it makes a difference when WR's are covered or held up for just a half a second to a second. Throws everything off for timing, etc.

You mean vagina?
December 29th, 2020 at 1:03 PM ^
Yes! I said before that he's True Blue! I know that with his measurables that he would have been selected in the 3rd or 4th rounds of the draft. I respect Aidan's fidelity to our team over the $$$ and hope for more good news like this about others who could leave in the near future.
December 28th, 2020 at 6:21 PM ^
Wait, what's the catch?
December 28th, 2020 at 6:23 PM ^
Position switch.
Moving to FB for the year.
December 28th, 2020 at 6:37 PM ^
He’s our new Defensive Coordinator.
December 28th, 2020 at 6:23 PM ^
By my count, we are currently at 88 scholarships, is this a year where we can go over or do we still have to shave off 3?
December 28th, 2020 at 6:40 PM ^
3 is a very manageable number
December 28th, 2020 at 7:11 PM ^
I get that but I look at the roster and I dont see 3 id really like to depart. Once again our to be junior and senior classes are small and id hate to keep losing younger kids like Carpenter before we get a chance to see what they can bring.
December 28th, 2020 at 7:17 PM ^
3 is the magic number
December 28th, 2020 at 7:13 PM ^
Any senior who would have been out of eligibility after 2020 does not count against your 85 cap next year
December 28th, 2020 at 8:02 PM ^
Is that by academic year or playing year? For example, do Steuber and Ross count with this rule or is it just people like Kemp? If it's just the actual football seniors then we are at 88 counting the incoming 20
December 29th, 2020 at 1:00 AM ^
My interpretation of the rule is that offering seniors an additional year does not impact the number of scholarships. So if you have were to have had spots made available by graduating seniors you could exceed your recruiting limit by that number.
I'm not sure how that applies to Michigan but if they are 3 over right now it's safe to assume attrition will reduce that number by at least 3 come next September.
December 28th, 2020 at 6:24 PM ^
This is just as surprising as Nico last year, If not moreso.
December 28th, 2020 at 6:28 PM ^
Yes, I am totally shocked. But what an amazingly pleasant surprise!
December 28th, 2020 at 6:26 PM ^
This has to be a huge bonus for any incoming DC. Aiden is a beast! Hopefully Hinton, Smith and another DE can step up this year and take some pressure off of the back-7. Fingers crossed!
December 28th, 2020 at 6:31 PM ^
I assume Jeter and Kemp will be back as well to provide a nice floor at the DT position, right?
If indeed Hinton and/or Smith make leaps, this could be a very good DL. I'm assuming Vilain / Ojabo will combine to be above average WDE.
December 28th, 2020 at 6:33 PM ^
Kemp is not going to come back for a 6th year.
December 28th, 2020 at 7:08 PM ^
Is Kemp eligible? I hope he comes back, and plays LB, as he should have in the first place. Needs to shed all the forced weight. Might have something. Dude is strong as an oz and I'd like to see a big LB again.
December 28th, 2020 at 7:54 PM ^
Kemp accepted Senior Bowl invite so he is gone.
December 28th, 2020 at 6:36 PM ^
I think Braiden McGregor will factor in as well.
December 28th, 2020 at 6:39 PM ^
The new DC, whenever they are hired, need to hit the portal hard for d tackles.
December 28th, 2020 at 8:03 PM ^
Yeah, hopefully Mazi and Hinton can make a big leap now that they'll actually have spring practice (maybe) this year. At least two of the guys from our grow-a-tackle program will also be DT-sized for the first time next year (Morris and Welschof), with a third as a maybe (Jenkins).
December 28th, 2020 at 6:27 PM ^
Excellent news. Aidan definitely has first round potential, and probably would have been selected in the first 5 rounds of this draft. Awesome to see him stick with it, despite the less than ideal circumstances!
December 28th, 2020 at 6:30 PM ^
Fantastic! One of the advantages of having a father who is a doctor: doesn’t need to jump to get paid early. Also helps that the father was himself a great DL for Michigan. Loved watching dad, and love watching Aidan.
December 28th, 2020 at 6:35 PM ^
A parent's profession has nothing to do with his decision. Moreso with his ankle injury and draft stock.
December 28th, 2020 at 6:43 PM ^
You think the financial security of the family of a football player has zero to do with their decision to go pro? You cray.
December 28th, 2020 at 7:00 PM ^
He wasn't projected to get drafted at 1st/2nd round. That alone is enough for him to come back to improve his draft stock.
December 28th, 2020 at 7:03 PM ^
I’d take being a broke college student over whatever I’m doing now. Seriously money can’t buy the college experience. I loved college. It was awesome.
December 28th, 2020 at 10:43 PM ^
Agreed! Some things aren't just about the money.
I don't think they do it anymore, but Michigan Football used to have a "Michigan Experience" program where rich executive types would pay thousands of dollars in donation money to play Michigan football player for a few days . . . unis, sessions with the coaches, practices, and a "game" at the end of it.
Those guys all had big bucks, but what they really wanted was to just get even a feel for what the Michigan football experience is like. It meant more to them than the considerable money they paid.
If I had that kind of money, I would have done it too.
December 28th, 2020 at 6:31 PM ^
This was IMO the biggest need we had to get back. I'm hopeful McGrone will follow suit.
December 28th, 2020 at 6:35 PM ^
Question for you since you brought up his name, but did McGrone not seem a step or 2 slower this year? I'd say the same thing about Ross. They both seemed to get ran past and weren't good in coverage. McGrone seemed like a laser last year.
December 28th, 2020 at 6:39 PM ^
I noticed this as well. It was like the whole team blew off strength, speed, and agility training in the off season. Covid seemed to affect our team more than anyone else's.
December 28th, 2020 at 6:53 PM ^
They were doing too much thinking and not enough reacting. IMO This has been a drawback on Harbaugh teams at UM, both in O and D. Things are so complicated...remember Dantonio's comment after the monsoon game (IIRC): "They must have come out in 40 different formations."
December 28th, 2020 at 7:18 PM ^
I get that in some instances but they looked slow even when they were chasing after people. I know they weren't loafing but it honestly looked like it at times. It really looked as if both were slower this year. I understand the mental part of it but the physical part was surprising to me.
December 28th, 2020 at 8:03 PM ^
More zone less rabid squirrels
December 28th, 2020 at 8:04 PM ^
but did McGrone not seem a step or 2 slower this year?
I agree he did not look good this year, but not many people did after the Minnesota game. And, he looked really good last year. This year's defense also had one coach down, two new assistants, and all sorts of injuries on the d-line. I'm willing to give him a pass and assume he's better than what's behind him, particularly as a senior. Colson is a highly rated recruit, but will be a true freshman. Savage is gone. I have no indication that either Hill-Green or Wheeler are ready. Then after that you're looking at Thomas who hasn't done anything yet and BVS who didn't look great. A senior with experience who has beaten a few rivals (MSU & ND) and has shown things in the past would be an important piece to get back.
December 28th, 2020 at 8:16 PM ^
Oh, I without a doubt want him and Ross back. I just thought they looked a step slower this year for some reason.
December 28th, 2020 at 8:24 PM ^
Certainly not across the board but does it seem like there's more player regression under JH? First year players, QB, LB, etc look good and the following year, many appear to be overthinking it? Or afraid to make a mistake?
December 28th, 2020 at 6:35 PM ^
Hope DT play is good enough that Hutch can concentrate on DE responsibilities
December 28th, 2020 at 6:41 PM ^
I join what I assume are many others making the same comment, that it's a late Christmas present.
December 28th, 2020 at 6:45 PM ^
Usually not an advocate for kidnapping grandmas, but desperate times call for desperate measures
Welcome back Aidan
December 28th, 2020 at 6:54 PM ^
God bless us, every one!
December 28th, 2020 at 7:13 PM ^
This is great news. Much better than nabbing a potential starter in the transfer portal! Looking forward to a monster senior year from Mr. Hutchinson.

Way to stay Aidan, GoBlue!
