Site Improvement: Brian pls read
This is a question for Brian, but I'd like everyone to view it.
With the recent ground-shaking change in our program, site traffic exploded and mgoblog went into a slightly-altered shell to weather the storm. User log-ins limited, and the site slowing up at times.
At a time like this, I feel it is most important for people to be able to log on, and express their opinions. My question to Brian is, can we as users, do anything to help improve the site?
In other words, if it takes money to upgrade the traffic this site can handle, I will gladly pitch in a few hundred (I probably should have done so by now anyway).
I hope that others will do the same, and pitch in whatever they can.

So yes throw some money into beviled guilt.
January 12th, 2011 at 7:17 PM ^
I thought it was mo money, mo problems...
But yes, everyone should hit the Beveled Guilt when they get the chance.

Profit is that you?

I hear you. I suspect that ChitownWolverine will not be criticizing the OP as he/she did me back in December. Its all good though - as long as the mention improves the website and the MGoTreasureChest I'm happy.
January 12th, 2011 at 4:58 PM ^
Everybody click every ad you see on the site upon logging in.
January 12th, 2011 at 5:01 PM ^
Do you know roughly how much a click is owrth. I'll sit here all day at work clicking ad banners.
January 12th, 2011 at 5:07 PM ^
Not much, but if every user clicks....
January 12th, 2011 at 5:08 PM ^
It depends on the ad but he can get anywhere from 1 cent to over a dollar for each click. However this only works for a day or so of clicking and if you click on too many ads you IP address doesn't log any more cash flow to brian. I'd recommend clicking a few a day so as not to set off the google "this guys doesn't actually care about this" detector.
I found this out the hard way - I set up a website and had some friends check it out. They knew I would get money from clicking and Google shut me down because they thought I was telling everyone to click - doh! (Don't worry, Brian gets WAAAYYYY to much traffic and has such a long history with Google I'm sure this wouldn't happen to him if you click-bomb the ads)
January 12th, 2011 at 5:10 PM ^
3-4 clicks a day from thousands of users at somewhere between 1 cent and $1=profit
January 12th, 2011 at 5:25 PM ^
i would echo the comments above.
Click, but don't go crazy (click on what interests you).
Advertising on the app side is still a bit in the early stages. Most ads pay per click, some pay per impression. The pay per click be anywhere from a penny to over a dollar. The mobile side doesn't seem to be dominated by Google like the desktop side.
January 12th, 2011 at 5:29 PM ^
I will adhere to the click, but not like a maniac rule. The last thing I want is for Brian's revenue stream to be interrupted.
January 12th, 2011 at 5:33 PM ^
I suspect the answer will be "no way in hell" but I'll ask anyway, just in case: Is there any way you or Brian or Tim or someone would share some information with respect to the weekly/monthly/quarterly/annual cost of running this website and/or what is needed to make necessary improvements? It might help to have even a tidbit of information relating to finances so we can plan our donations accordingly (meaning donate more if necessary). I apologize if my forwardness (new word) is offensive - that is obviously not my intention.
January 12th, 2011 at 5:52 PM ^
I'm an outsider, so I have no idea... so "no way in hell".
January 12th, 2011 at 5:04 PM ^
do you have to let it load all the way after you click it? Or can I just click it and immediately close the page before it even loads?
January 12th, 2011 at 5:08 PM ^
I'm fairly certain just click it
January 12th, 2011 at 5:26 PM ^
Google ADSense can take away your revenue if users are "told" to click on ads from the site. I'd just be careful with this, FWIW.
January 12th, 2011 at 5:41 PM ^
Dang I forgot about this. Mod delete! Quick!
January 12th, 2011 at 4:59 PM ^
Brian has plans to upgrade the servers later this year. I am sure making a donation would go over quite well. Clicking ads on the site is helpful as well. Especially if you have the Iphone app.
January 12th, 2011 at 5:12 PM ^
Didn't he say it would be a little bit after the offseason and NSD? So maybe late February/Marchish?
January 12th, 2011 at 5:00 PM ^
That was very frustraiting not being able to sign in.
I will be happy to donate all of my bolivianos to this cause.
January 12th, 2011 at 5:54 PM ^
good to see you're paying off your Bolivianos debt.
January 12th, 2011 at 5:00 PM ^
Servers aren't cheap, I'm sure Brian would have loved the capicity to handle everything, but it just can't be done without the money.
January 12th, 2011 at 5:04 PM ^
MGo's big time now baby!
January 12th, 2011 at 5:05 PM ^
Well, I guess we know who the respected source is for Michigan coaching searches.
January 12th, 2011 at 5:06 PM ^
That's so cool to see in a graph. Nice to see our MGoCommunity has really taken off MGoBigTime.
January 12th, 2011 at 5:07 PM ^
And who says UM football isn't relevant....
January 12th, 2011 at 5:10 PM ^
...and he's a douche.
January 12th, 2011 at 5:14 PM ^
"Drew Sharp and he's **the Antichrist**"
January 13th, 2011 at 2:21 AM ^
More like (Assistant To) the Antichrist.
January 12th, 2011 at 5:08 PM ^
more wins=more page views

January 12th, 2011 at 5:09 PM ^

January 12th, 2011 at 5:11 PM ^
Canada not holding up its end....f%&!ing Canadians
.../s I guess
January 12th, 2011 at 5:17 PM ^
Yeah, but do you realize Clarkie makes up 80% of those pageviews?
January 12th, 2011 at 5:23 PM ^
There's an exception to every rule
January 12th, 2011 at 5:28 PM ^
Mr. Hackney.
January 12th, 2011 at 5:41 PM ^
Hackney's Canadian? No wonder he has an unhealthy appetite for making peace
January 12th, 2011 at 5:15 PM ^
as well. Going to Beveled Guilt now.
January 12th, 2011 at 6:22 PM ^
Hey, what site was that you got the pageview info from?
January 12th, 2011 at 6:34 PM ^
I used quantcast.com for that particular graph, but there are others (alexa.com comes to mind)
January 12th, 2011 at 5:03 PM ^
I've hit that iPhone App as many times as it will allow me but I won't stop just because things seem to be back to normal around here.... whatever that means.
January 12th, 2011 at 5:11 PM ^
I'd recommend moving to the MGoCloud for instance Google App Engine (or Amazon EC2, etc). Scalable. No hardware.
January 12th, 2011 at 6:00 PM ^
second that...The Cloud is where it is at.
January 12th, 2011 at 5:11 PM ^
check me out, theres so much room for activities
January 12th, 2011 at 5:13 PM ^
How about moving some of the service to Amazon's cloud compute services S3 + CloudFront (CDN)? Quick Google searching shows at least some interest from Drupal developers for using S3. S3 is dirt cheap.
January 12th, 2011 at 5:36 PM ^
bingo.
January 12th, 2011 at 5:14 PM ^
Click on the app ads too - tho Brian splits those revenues.

One of the recent ads seems to be opening up to a video on it's own all the time -- kind of annoying -- hopefully he's getting credit every time.
January 12th, 2011 at 5:18 PM ^
that should be fixed now, though yea... they did count as clicks
January 12th, 2011 at 5:20 PM ^
it was annoying until I realized it was counting each time so then it was worth it. I told you the other day I had a Nissan ad. Hadn't seen one since. Sorry.
