M Alums in Michigan media
Got a question for an alumni related project I'm working on. I'm looking for Michigan grads in the media in SE Michigan, [articularly those in sports media.
I know of (1) Niyo at the Detroit News (2) Mark Snyder & Drew Sharp at the Freep (no comment). Who else is an M grad? Anyone in TV? I know Bernie Smilovitz's son writes for The Daily, is Bernie one of ours?

I'm not sure whether to laugh or punch my computer screen.

and I just punched a dolphin!

I had the strange urge to pretend I am a dog, cock my leg, and pee on my computer screen.

Ugh, I had to draw a goofy mustache in sharpie. Now I need to get a new monitor first thing in the morning. Also, when I scroll up and down, the mustache stays in place and looks silly. Regret drinking tonight...

Eh maybe not, there aren't a lot of local names there

Your assistance is greatly appreciated. Unfortunately my assignment is to find people in SE Michigan (Detroit media market).

Bob Wojnowski, sports columnist, Detroit News

This is exactly what I was hoping for. Always wondered if Wojo is an M grad. Has he ever mentioned in his columns or on his old radio show?

It's in his Detroit News bio:

He's somebody in media:

Does your definition of "media" include broadcasters? If so, there's obviously Jim Brandstatter.
Also, I'm pretty sure that Sam Webb attended U-M but "went pro" before graduating.

Ryan Ermani, on Sports Radio 1130. He also works for another media outlet but I'm not sure which one.

He's on Fox 2

I think that Ira Weintraub at WTKA is a Michigan grad as well.

Not necessarily located in SE Michigan, but Adam Schefter with ESPN is a UM grad.

Michigan. He used to be on ESPN, Rich Eisen. Mike Tirico is from AA, not sure if he went to UM though.
November 18th, 2010 at 1:12 AM ^
I didn't know he was from Ann Arbor, but I do know he graduated from Syracuse.
November 18th, 2010 at 1:13 AM ^
Tirico went to Syracuse, though he now lives in Ann Arbor (and used to be Tommy Amaker's next-door neighbor).
November 18th, 2010 at 2:11 PM ^
because of how much a University of Michigan homer he is. I live in the dreaded state of Ohio and all fans here hate Tirico because whenever he talks about Michigan he is biased towards them. It is great!
GO BLUE!

Nicholas Cotsonika at the Freep is an M grad. I rmember reading his work at the Daily when I was a student.
November 18th, 2010 at 7:25 AM ^
I thought Cotsonika is now Yahoo's lead hockey writer? He's been doing some great work for them.
November 18th, 2010 at 7:10 AM ^
He went to law school at Michigan!

Weatherman on WDIV went to UM.

The best boxing historian out there.

Here's an interesting tidbit that will make you appreciate unbiased reporting. Chengalis of the Detroit News is a die-hard OSU fan. You would never know judging by her writing though. I think she does a good job of being impartial and sometimes U-M slanted.
November 18th, 2010 at 11:32 AM ^
I believe graduated or is from Cincinnati and is Cincy supporter, not OSU.
November 18th, 2010 at 12:10 PM ^
But she's an OSU fan. Even Lloyd Carr knew it. He used to screw with her, especially during OSU week.

Are you looking only for recognized journalists or just people involved in media on any level (production, editors, etc.)? Is it limited to on-air talent in TV/Radio or print as well?
