Feel free to delete this, but I suggest you link to this in the "Useful Stuff" tab.
August 12th, 2010 at 12:14 AM ^
I disagree, folks that are getting comments deleted aren't looking at other Useful Stuff topics like, "MGoBoard FAQ," which would prevent many posts/threads from being deleted. I understand where you're coming from, however.
Example:
Why did my post get deleted/edited?
Getting personal on college athletes usually results in a deletion, and virtually always when it's a Michigan player in question. Threads that invite flaming also get deleted. Threads with misleading titles designed to scare the crap out of readers before they click will either be deleted or edited so that their titles reflect their contents.

If/When you got your email notifying you that your comment was deleted in this thread, it was not because it was problematic or inappropriate. It was removed to clear for the actual "work" comments that are coming or already here. You 99.9% likely did nothing wrong and it was deleted to keep this thread effective and not muddled with convo/outdated requests or comments.

PG13 ok or does it need to be PG

If you wouldn't want your mom to see it, don't post it. Or more appropriately, if you wouldn't want Brian's mom to see it, don't post it. Because my mom would have probably accepted more bad taste for good comedy, but everyone's MMV, so go with his mom.

Cussing for the sake of cussing is frowned upon. There's some funny exceptions, but we ask to keep it within some arbitrary limits. There are a few choice words Brian has specifically banned people over. I'd rather not list those out, and I'd appreciate people not specifically guessing, or making this a place to guess. If you search the site deep enough, you'll find a thread on banned words.
Summary: I think the general mod way of looking at it, is there are some words that cross the line. Try not to cross the line.

I left this one for far too long. Getting tighter now about the "hey guys how annoying is MSU right now?" threads.
Living in the same state as another school in conference is part of the Michigan fandom experience, and yes, many MSU fans don't know the difference between a victory and a chance to torment Michigan fans. But this kind of stuff just invites flaming, and encourages heretofore worthwhile Spartan commentators to turn into she-trolls (she's a she).

Opinions on football by Tom Dienhardt should be given equal weight with football opinions by anteaters, i.e. we are impressed that such a life form can communicate in a written human language, but we're not overwhelmed with its penetrating insight.

OT- Freep circulation down; numbers.
Freep kerfluffle has been asked to be toned down. We all know it's stupid. So either you're trying to flame it (as the OP was avoiding), or the freep is just off topic. As it's off topic, it's less kerfluffle for me to have to read, as OT is banned.

Had I seen the octopus before heading back to work, it would have been gone sooner. As far as Detroit vs Detroit, I extend a little slack on Ann Arbor/Detroit related things without political implication and will allow more stringent moderators delete it if they feel so inclined.
I'm much closer to deleting that, than say, the MNF thread last night. Technically no Lions means no MNF thread under the guidelines given. But, enough of a tie to Michigan's game in 2012 to the stadium and any Michigan alumni in the game (Manningham) allowed me the slack to not go all THIS IS THE RULEZ on the thread.
I try to encourage flexibility, and I'm also not on a set schedule where I patrol the board all day long. Tis' life.
As far as OT board, that's not something I am capable of producing, and like any other time it's suggested, I point you toward Brian's email. I know he's considered the idea, and he's almost to the point of opening up the board to it. I wouldn't be surprised if he's busy enough with the season to implement it right now. I'm not sure though.
EDIT: This response was to the post moved a few slots down
October 26th, 2010 at 1:40 PM ^
it's currently football season, not Octopus Topic season
October 26th, 2010 at 1:47 PM ^
How is an OT topic about a town in Oregon any more applicable than the OT topic about Paul the Octopus, allowing that this board was essentially a World Cup board for over a month.
I'm not going to flip out and blow a gasket like some guys, but you guys really should implement an OT board that doesn't post to the MGoSidebar. I don't understand the reluctance.
October 26th, 2010 at 2:03 PM ^
is how people keep throwing out this notion that there should be an OT board as if it's some new, exciting idea nobody has come up with. there is already a lot of time spent patrolling the board as is without developing an OT board where people tend to think anything goes and now we have boobs and rants calling nancy pelosi hitler without a mustache (or with?)
things involving Detroit and the city of ann arbor are loosely on topic/meta because the school is located within the city and largely a mock suburb of detroit. it was allowed to slide because it was remotely allowable and also didn't make me want to gouge my eyes out. it also had quick responses and was something people wanted to discuss. the problem, it seems, is that the mods didn't go Stalin during the Bye week so 20x more OT posts popped up. people are unhappy no matter what - we could declare Wednesday Free Ice Cream Day and people would bitch the following day that they got sick bc they were lactose intolerant and why isn't there a Thursday free ice cream day?
Brian has already stated he has little interest in having MGoBlog become an RCMB or a place where OT discussion happens with frequency. what's more, "an OT board that doesn't post to the MGoSidebar" requires development, bandwidth, time... all of which cost money.
October 26th, 2010 at 3:43 PM ^
I understand where you are coming from. Your points are all valid, and I'm not the type to immediately dismiss anyone who disagrees with me. I would like to add a couple counterpoints, however.
I liken this OT argument to the instant replay rule. I think you guys act a lot like the powers that be, whether it be FIFA or the MLB. You guys are skeptical to open up a whole new can of worms while the current can of worms is still going strong. And there are good reasons not to, as you pointed out above - just as there are good reasons not to go to instant replay (that's another discussion).
Your fanbase wants an OT board, just like sports fans want instant replay. There may be some who don't, but the overwhelming majority do. It's uncharted territory for you, and I'll be the first to admit that I'm not the one volunteering (or being paid for, not sure which) my time.
As far as blood, sweat, tears, and cash - it would pay for itself after a while. True, you'd have to invest some resources, but your payout is based on page views. An OT board would undoubtedly increase page views.
As far as moderating it... why not create a higher threshold to post on it? People with over 1000 points would be trustworthy enough, I think. It doesn't take much time to nuke a thread.
October 26th, 2010 at 5:28 PM ^
that's brian's call in the end. and you'd be surprised the things people with 13000 points have thought was 'ok' to post.
good talk.

No idea. I deleted a lot of comments in the frozen thread. I know I saw your name in that area, but as far as the supposed 3k, I have no idea.
